I'd recommend to look at adjustable Rancho shocks. I recently installed Kayaba Monomax and my VX still bumpy.
I'd also recommend to check that your springs are OK and run with full fuel tank (so the rear will be not so easy to jump :)).

I've heard about the Rancho shocks as being good replacements for our VXs. HOW do they adjust? Are they somehow wired to a switch inside the passenger cabin? Or do you have to climb under the VX and make adjustments on the shocks themselves?

PHO2GR4 - It can be done either way. The shocks come with a little dial selector with positions from 0 - 9 for firmness. Most owners climb underneath, set them, and forget about them. They also make a remote kit so that you can adjust them from inside the cabin, but I've heard they are difficult to install and trouble-prone.

yep, i went to a local shop specializing in 4x4s to ask about the ranchos and i asked him for a price on the in cabin adjusting kit.. he told me not to bother because their shop had installed about 20 of them and all but 1 came back within a month because of problems leaking (they do quality work, so its not beause of a crappy install)

Hey Kyle,
Thanks for the input (also on the idea for the steel-braided brake lines, in the other thread). I really didn't like the idea of mounting some after-market remote inside the cabin.
I'll stick with the idea of just manually adjusting the shocks, as necessary.

I got rancho rs5000 shocks which are real nice,firm ride but soft,but to get a bit softer ride i pulled my rear wheels of and cut the lower section of the rubber bump stops off with the sawzall,my bump stops were only about 1/4 inch from the axle and mmmmm seems stupid. o and dont have your tires inflated to the maximum psi,my max psi on my toyo st tires is 50 psi and i run them at 45 psi which seems perfect,i have tried the 50 psi and the 42 psi,the 50 is too hard and the 42 is too soft lmfao :p

Wow! What tires (size) do you use? I'm using stock tires (both 245/60R18 for the summer time, and 245/70R16 for the winter) and inflate them to Isuzu suggested 29 psi.

Nice,Willy.... I had to respond to this post, I like it so much... Bilstein shocks will go a long way toward softening up that ride. They are a little too soft for most, so they may be just what you're looking for. Good luck with the baby, Wayne

I highly recommend Rancho RS9000 adjustable and put them on the softest setting (#1). I also bought the in-cabin remote control unit but never installed it. I'm not for or against it, just never took the time to do it and I don't plan to do much adjustment. If you're interested, PM me for a cheap price since it's just collecting dust right now.

I am curreently using Falken Tyre 265x50x20,and I think its not because of my tire.I tried to cut the rear stopper and replace the rear spring with volvo 960 spring ,cut the 2 coils to lower my rear to look even with the front n great looking now.I havent changed the shock yet..I remove the front rubber stopper..On the flat nice road seems ok,but on the hump ...huhh ..the rear back jumpy just after it passes the hump...So all friends here recomended Rancho 9000 ajustable .Thank you all,but dont you think changing the shock alone will not solve the total issue?I really dream to have a smooth less bumpy vehicross without pillow though.Is the rancho double action or single action ..anyone know the price n the correct tipe for the front n rear shock?thank you for attending to my problems in details..

Actually once I changed from R18 to R16 wheels the ride become more smooth. With R20 it would more bumpy.
Saved from an earlier post:
According to Rancho Shock table:
RS99214 = Front
RS99215 = Rear
numbers come from Trooper listing that interchanges with the VX.

For a softer ride you can install Rodeo (or Amigo/Rodeo Sport) springs in the back, some comfy shocks (OME, Bilstein, etc) and 16" rims/tires. Springs should be easy to come by. I have a set that I'd be happy to get out of the basement, but anyone who's lifted a Rodeo has a set too. VX shocks are fairly stiff.
There are lots of options for shocks that will soften the ride. I'm partial to OME shocks but there are lots of other good choices. Going into things blind I might be tempted to get the Rancho 9000s just because you can adjust the firmness.
The comment on wheels/tires is related to the amount of sidewall. 18" tires have less sidewall than a comparable 16" tire. This means that there is less rubber to flex going over bumps. That's good for racing but bad for your kidneys. Maybe you can find a local 1999 VX driver who wants to just swap with you. You'll also find that 16" tires are cheaper too.

Hendrik, you should follow Nazrat's first suggestion - change the springs as well as the shocks. The stock springs are very, very stiff, and so the shocks are very, very stiff to dampen the motion of the springs. The two must be in balance to achieve a good ride.
If you just change the shocks, you will get a softer ride, but it will likely be too springy and bouncy. The VX I bought had the original shocks removed and softer shocks installed in their place, and it jumped and bumped around so much on its original springs that it was awful to drive on bumpy roads.
If you switch to a softer spring and a shock that is well-matched to it, you will get a softer but well-controlled ride.
Good luck!

I still have my original stock springs. I replaced the soft shocks that the previous owner had installed with Bilstein B46-1738/1739-H1 shocks. I was able to compare them directly to the factory VX shocks on a local VX, and found them to be about the same stiffness as the originals.
Good luck!
