Is it possible to put one in a VX? it seems like an obvious choice, and I have seen the N1, but never the D3 in a VX. Is there some kind of fitting issue? I prefer the in-dash GPS to the flip out and I'm open to any and all suggestions.

The only fitting issue is that it is double DIN, where the n1 is single. So you would have to mod your VX to use it. People have done that before and if I remember right it just entails getting rid of the center air vents.

Would a decent stereo shop be able to do it? I am not mechanically inclined at all.

some stores dont mod center console, so u might have to just use a n1(n3 now).
