hi guys..just have a question,
1) when it says only 4153 vehicross were made, is this only for the american market or total worldwide?

That is the total number imported to the USA in '99, 200, and 2001.

there were others built starting in '96 i believe.. they are right hand drive japanese spec VXs with 3.2L engines... cloth seats... round front marker lights (in place of the 3.5L symbol) and front fender mirrors... i dunno how many were made but i dont think it was very many because VX cladding was made with ceramic dies that were not meant to mass produce for very long.. so moral of the story.. the production number you saw 4,1-- is only for us models, there are others elsewhere in the world not accounted for in that number

well one thing i do know is there are more hummers in NZ than VX... and a hummer will cost you $150k here.. !@@@#!

On the breakdown of MY and color combos that is frequently posted here, I thought it said there were about 4500-4600 made, which may account for the rest-of-world numbers. I will start quoting the 4100 number for the US...

4153 - Total US imports
4309 - Total Exported from Japan from 1999-2001
?? - Total built in Japan for JDM market from 1997-1999, including those exported (only 175 were built for the JDM market in 1999 as "175 Limited" - these were offered in 25 optional colors and closes resembled the 1999 US version in options, i.e. Leather seats, alloy wheels, etc). From what I've seen, I think fewer than 900 were made in these years for the JDM market but this is unconfirmed.

Those window deflectors you have were also a dealer option and not offered here in the US - tough to find now although they do occasional show up in Yahoo Japan's auction.

yer they are great.. i love em.. can drive with the windows down just a little bit and not get my face clown all over the place....
is there much difference between the 3.2l motor we get and the 3.5 you got?
you guys did win with the leather interiors tho... they r nice......

3.2L for Japan and 3.5L for the US both produce about the same amount of HP and Torque - the displacement was upped due to fuel requirements, emissions and tuning for the US, I believe, plus as a general marketing gimick. It's basically the same long block, even sharing many of the same rebuild parts/gaskets. I think I read somewhere that Japanese fuel was better so the 3.2L in the US markets suffered a little once the difference in emissions was applied - the 3.5L is supposed to bring it back up to about the same specs. The 3.5L wasn't offered in Japan, even for subsequent, different models that still used a similar engine (Trooper comes to mind - I don't believe the Axiom was ever offered in Japan).
What's interesting is that the original prototype had a Direct-injected supercharged 1.6 liter engine (close relative of the Lotus Elan) said to produce the power of a 2.2 liter motor, which was used for efficiency and economy - essentially producing a "Green"er vehicle before the term became commonly used. It was abandoned due to the extra weight of the production VX (weighed more than the prototype because off-the-shelf parts were used instead of the lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber composites in the prototype). The production vehicle weighed much more than the prototype and needed the extra displacement to push all that weight to decent performance levels.

right so basically the engines are the same.... i think s some of the troopers here use the 3.5l engine... mmm... but im happy with mine.. goes great.... plently of power.
plus seeing as our petrol cost HEAPS more than yours then a smaller motor is ok:)

Howcum N.Z. won't let me emigrate?? I've family in Oz, and can come in thru there maybe, but comming directly from the U.S. as a native, is a problem. Wifey has a fat position within her company, open for her, if she'll relocate. I'm ready to go way down the bottom (of the south island), and never be heard from again ;) We're working on it (not a hijack...just a rare chance to say hi to a Kiwi)

So from the above chart, ours is simply a "stroker" version. Probably only difference is the crank and maybe some tweaked cams.
What I'd like to know... :confused:
Does anyone use 5.7 quarts of oil when they do a change with filter ?
Mine is on the full mark with five.
My Trooper buddy Jim has a 3.2 sohc(94) that does take 5.7. :_thinking

i believe its to do with america invading iraq and pushing fuel prices thru the roof... :)
nah really.. immigration is quite tight now.... mostly as a direct r response to current US policies.....tit for tat kinda thing... US makes it tough for us.. we make it tough back.. blah blah and so on....

I had to add 6.5 to a totaly dry rebuilt engine.
