anyone know if the jdm steering wheel would fit the american models without modification? airbag in it? i love the look of the jdm steering wheel and really would like to try to get one in my vx... dont wanna lose the airbag or spend a fortune though... any thoughts on this? wonder how hard it would be to get a hold of one in the first place

Hi,

Mine's a JDM and I can tell you they have an airbag but I'm not keen on removing it to check the shaft size, I can't think why there'd be a difference but then again there are a fair few oddities between US and JDM. I'll try find it in the Trooper manual which covers the VX.

I seem to remember reading that the Momo wheel air bag didn't meet US specs. Not sure what that means - the airbag size or some other component. It may have just been some licensing thing between Isuzu and Momo that prevented it from coming over (the US verson has "Isuzu" embossed on it). One ended up on eBay a few years ago but I got outbid.

I also am looking for one. I have MOMO for the floor plates (atomik), floor mats, manual shift knob (atomik), floor pedals and outside decals. I would LOVE to have one.

If there is any way I can get my hands on one.... oooooohhhh lol

I'm most certainly interested as well.

i know of other people (not in a vx) that have swapped out steering wheels with airbags for ones that dont have them, so i dont see why it would be a problem to have a smaller airbag, but definitely something to look into.. I read somewhere that the american steering wheel goes for like $800 new though so that doesn't make me feel good about a price on a jdm

I never realised there was a difference. The one in mine is nice though...

it can be done, I've done it, but you need the 'contact ring' as well.
They are different between JDM & US models & can only be bought with the combination switches/indicator arms etc.
Cost:
JDM Momo wheel £511/$1000, airbag £402/$800, comb switch+ring £173/$340
US wheel £317/$600 (red/black only available), airbag £402/$800, comb switch+ring £?/$? still waiting for a price but probably the same as above.
UK prices + 17.5% tax.
Hope this helps even if to decide that it's cost prohibitive.
I swapped between VXs so didn't need to buy any parts.

So basically one can swap out the steering wheel with the Momo one IF you can find it right? Who sells this stuff?

So it would be bsaically about $1140 for the parts and then my time for installation, is that right?

Thanks

$1140+$1000 for the Momo wheel yes.
Isuzu Japan can supply the parts, it's whether your Isuzu dealers in the US will order JDM parts?
Try asking Merlin at St Charles Isuzu if not you could try an English Isuzu dealer but it does get complicated.
If for export you probably won't have to pay the 17.5% tax but obviously the extra shipping costs & any US import tax on top.
I'm looking fo secondhand parts, both JDM & US, but they are difficult to find.

I'd see if you can find a wrecked VX in japan where the owner would be willing to ship the steering wheel...

Also consider that the owner of a JDM VX might be interested in a USDM steering wheel as much as you're interested in theirs... maybe see if you can find someone who is willing to just trade wheels.

JDM Leather steering wheel for my 240sx is $800 without the air bag plus another $600 for the airbag portion + $300 for the ring ...

but I simply found someone who had imported a wrecked JDM version for parts and bought the wheel with airbag and ring adapter for $120 shipped... the leather is warn in one spot but it's looking like I can get it professionally reconditioned through a company called "fibrenew" for about $60-$80.... $200 total for a complete like new leather JDM wheel isn't too bad at all...
