You normally only replace the ERG when needed - it's two metric hex-head bolts and a gasket - about a 10 minute job if you're proficient.

You will need a 12mm socket. One of the bolts cross threaded as I put it back in and I had to "tap" it. Otherwise it would have taken about 10 minutes. It came with a new gasket and no need to put any glue, or stickem on it. Just line it up and put the bolts back in. Very VERY easy job. Cleaining it out may cost less, but will require more time. I changed it cause I kept getting the check engine light associated with it.
EGR = Emission Gas Return (I think)

ok, next dumb question, how will I know if I need it, check engine light?, significant drop in gas mileage?, smoking?
the increase in gas mileage has me very interested in doing this but I'm not one to just throw money away if I don't need to change something
it's nice to know it's so easy when, and if, I need to replace it

The check engine code I got was P0405. Lots of articles about that here and they pretty much all lead to the EGR valve. I had no issues with my engine other than the light coming on. If you have state emissions and the light is on, they probably won't even look at you till it's off. I am not sure if having a bad EGR valve, with no light warning, will show up on an emissions test or not.
I did ask a mechanic to clean it while he changed out my A/C pump awhile back, but then the light came back on, so I just changed the valve.

Does replacing the EGR also replace the "EGR tube"? That is, does it solve the clogged EGR tube problem? Last time my VX saw the mechanic, they mentioned that it was about 80% clogged, and if it totally closed off, it would suck all the oil out of the engine.
We all know what THAT means...
So anyway, if $200 and 10 minutes can save me from a blown engine, then I'm there.

The one I got from Autozone did not include an EGR tube. Just the valve and the gasket.

Has anyone tried a Snake-bit to clean the EGR tube:

Also, there's a seller on eBay who sells OEM EGRs for $109 shipped:

I believe that unit will work on the VX (better cuz I bought one!).
