View Full Version : Center cap problems with certain wheels?

I am debating on these as new wheels for the VX, but the company I called to possibly order through was concerned that the caps would not fit because of the front hub extending beyond the lugs? Has anyone else had this problem or have an opinion on if it would be possible to "make it work". They said they can bore out the center hole to make them as large as needed for the VX by the way:

They all would look sharp, but the first one would be my choice.

Me too, of all those posted, these appear the most likely to clear the front hubs.

I would really like to go chrome with just a little bit of black but I agree black looks great. I am leaning towards the Panther 280C http://www.aaron-katzman.com/panther/280c-r10.gif and trying to paint the 5 small strips black that go from the wheel center to the rim edge. Or the Cruiser 926C http://www.rimfinancing.com/BRANDS/Cruiser-Alloy/album/medium/Cruiser%20Alloy%20926C-028.jpg that LDub and George like. I also like the American Racing RT-S that Tom likes http://www.tiretrends.com/include/get_image.php?id=4793 Those are my top three now and will make a decision shortly any more input greatly appreciated on these 3 options. Thanks.

Ryan, lol you need to go into ploitics after you win the olympics. The one I really liked was the very first one you started the thread about. lol

Ah I see sorry about that, yeah that would be great but it seems like there is two much center bore center cap problems to deal with but I found a couple new ones I like:

Now on to research about the offset.....

And politics huh? Well, it seems I am far too conservative for this day in age to run for office. But you never know ;)

Don't forget to look at MKW wheels, they have a few that will fit our beloved VX and if you look at their gallery, there is a nice looking dragon there, but then I would say that since it's mine.

I can see the concern for center cap with those styles with hub inserts.
If it's any help, here's a few pics i have of the hub you have to avoid....

It sticks out almost 3" so the rim has to be either deep or have a center cap that is a protruding cup.

Good Luck.

Thanks a lot. I am still going through many different options. This hub problem is only an issue on the front wheels correct? Thanks again, those photos help a lot, especially since my VX is still at Aamco and I can't just run outside and visualise!

There's some pix in my gallery that show the front hub since I don't have center caps. Maybe that'll help answer some of your questions. There's no hub protrusion on the rear wheels (sorry, no close up pix).

Just a little update on the center bore.
We do not need 108mm as I have seen listed around here.
The factory spare only has 98-100mm center bore, 8-10mm can make a huge difference when having wheels custom bored..... I would say if anyone was going to have wheels custom bored in the future 100mm is as wide as you need. Just a little FYI.

I would double check too, I ordered my rims bored over to 108 mm and I know my fronts barely clear(they stick sometimes going on or off). It is really easy to measure the hubs themselves. I am out of town, so I can't check mine, I am just going off of what I ordered and how hard they were to fit on over the hubs.

Also, I saw these(they're new) in an offroading mag:

I wonder about that myself, but went out this morning when I read it and mic the spare and sure enough, it measures out at 3.940 inches, which is which is 100.076mm,

I think these (http://www.4wheelparts.com/PPT4725T100106.aspx) would look great on a VX!

Agreed, but are those real beadlocks? Because if so someone might be gettin' some new wheels:yesy:

If you know a good welder just buy a weld on beadlock kit and add them to the rims you have now! THESE (http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Weld-on-Aluminum-Beadlock-Kit_p_0-1555.html) ones are sweet but there are a lot that are cheaper (like these (http://www.mrt-wheels.com/catpages/page13.html) or these (http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/wheels/beadlocks.htm) ).

Yeah I did another CV Boot replacement today and double checked the stock rims and actually measured the hubs themselves. Stock rims are almost perfectly 100mm, looks to me between 99 and 100mm, and the hubs are somewhere between 96-97mm. So yeah 100mm is perfect and plenty of room :)

I wonder if it's because you have the 2001 with the 18" wheels. I wonder if they changed from the 16" wheels that came stock on mine and changed the hubs as well. I know the center caps are different, but I would have thought someone would notice a bore difference at some point. It's driving me nuts because I can't check mine for a week and a half.

Um, Billy, I don't think 20" wheels and beadlocks go hand in hand. I will do it however after I SAS and can put some 36"-37" tires on 'em. Right now If I tried to air down to any great extent I'm rolling on train wheels. Although from what the alignment guys told me, they couldn't align my VX with the current wheels on it because the machine they use has to grab around between the bead and the edge of the rim, and they couldn't get it to fit(because of super tight sidewalls) after two hours. So they had to align my VX with the stock wheels and rims and then compensate for the different wheels.
