So its time to start the front end transformation!
Today I started by using a blow dryer to heat up my old (crash damaged) front cladding and push the deformities out.
This is how it looked after...

Taped for the cutting. It will get cut along the lower edge of the tape. The corners will be rounded...

I'd love to do something similar. An Aggressive pre runner winch mount bumper would be very cool on a VX.

Tom, you mean "sic"!:cool: Sick = ;puke2;
I will ask Stric9 to make a guide of the bumpers (just as they did the sliders) for future productions of them if there is posible interest in them.
I need to figure out what will be best to cut the clading with...cut off wheel or sawzall.
taylorRichie

Dremel Dremel Dremel...
With Cut off wheels, or the larger "metal grinding" wheel... It cuts the cladding like butta.
And it leaves a nice clean edge. I've been using it the past few days to do my trimming for wheel fitment. As well as for my tone hitch install.
Very small easy to control etc... Highly recommend it. (wear gloves)

Thanks, I will have to see if I can pick up a cheap one around here.

agreed! when i did tones hitch i used an angle grinder to cut the bulk of the material to about 1/4 to 1/8 inch of where my lines were.. then used the dremmel sanding drum to take it down smoothly to where i needed it... thats how i did my roof rail covers and my flush mounted scangauge too.. good stuff.. i think i paid like 70 bucks for my dremmel almost 5 years ago and maybe 50 on accessories for it over the years ive owned it

Billy,
I bought a "dremel" (not sure the actual brand name) at Costco last year for under $20 to cut my cladding.
It worked fine. I'm pretty sure it's not as nice as an actual Dremel, but take a look at it just for comparison purposes. Just a heads up.
Good Luck!

I'm still hazy as to precisely what your going for but am very interested nonetheless (is that supposed to be one word?):_confused Anywho very nice and i look forward to seeing the completed project! Awesome! Wish I had a spare bumper to mess with :) Great forward clearance.
Knivx, I believe he's going to put a bumper similar to this

So it would seem that all the clearance gained by trimming is going to be lost to a bumper? I could see like a simple bar like a rock slider for the front but maybe i'm still not looking fourth dimensionally or something. Either way can't wait to see it!

From the looks of the pictures are you thinking of rounding off the edges of the cladding? I am thinking of a nice gentle sweeping angle from the wheel weel to the blinker. Right now the 90 degree angle cut in the cladding looks definitely cut and I don't think it fits the feel of the VX right now. If you are going to have a lot of hard angles and straight lines in the bumper than I could see it coming together nicely in the end, but just a thought. I think I would round the edge, but once you cut you can never go back. What were your thoughts?

I left mine straight for now because I think it will work with the bumper better. Once the bumper is done there may be some additional trimming.

06/21/2008, 03:08 PM
I have found that with the bottom of the cladding cut the VX runs a bit cooler. I am assuming it is allowing more air flow to the radiator from the bottom. The cladding actually blocks a lot of air from the bottom since it has a big foam block in there that keeps air from flowing from the bottom when in its stock form.

I actually have a front pic of the Geolander VX floating around my computer someplace. I have always liked it. That front bumper is tied in to a full cage and the upper supports come out of the engine compartment just below the hood. It also has about $3000 worth of HID's sitting on it!

Just returned from meeting with Richard. Everything went well! He is going to weld up my sliders and from the pics he took of the VX is going to do some drawings of the bumper. When the sliders get done he is going to install them and we are going to go over the drawings and then he will get started on the bumpers. The rear bumper will probably have a reciever hitch incorperated into it! I will update as soon as I have more progress to report!

Richard already has a jig for the rock sliders (to see them check Biju or TucsonVX's gallery) so they can be reproduced. I also told him that there may be some interest in the bumpers so he will be making a jig for them as well when he makes mine. These guys are a small home shop so it may take a bit of time if you have them made since they do it in their extra time but their work is top notch. Everyone I know that they have done work for has been satisfied.

We threw around a couple ideas for phase 3 (front and rear bumpers) and we think we came up with something that will be very sweet indeed! Bumpers will be tube rock bumpers with corner protection and a small stinger in front and will follow the lines of the VX nicely!
Remember all will have jigs made so if anyone else is interested they will be available!

Awesome job, I need to get some rock sliders before Moab next year. God Goony bird was very kind to me this year. I had some on my 86 Bronco when some guy T boned me with his midsize Pontiac. It completely destroyed the front of the car and the only damage to the bronco was some trim that popped off and some paint scuffs on the slider bar. The officer that came to the seen thought it was a hit and run. I had to point out the scuffs on the bar.:p

Billy,
What do your plans look like? Do you have a drawing you can put up just for a little taste before the feast? I'm getting kinda hungry.
Peace.

Tom, plans are in my head. I don't have the proper cord to transfer them to the computer! They will bolt on to existing mounts. The front will replace the bumper bar and have a small stinger. Both bumpers will wrap around the corners for protection. The rear may have a reciever hitch.

So am I...Richard has a REAL job that unfortunately has bee keeping him super busy with a ton of overtime. I can give him a break though since his work involves building some really sweet prototype electric powered rock buggies to be used by our troops (special ops) in some extreme locations!

*sigh*, ADD, another made up american disorder...jsut admit that you are impatient, it isn't a disorder, it is a characteristic, like having a short temper. ;) Or being a smartass.

student gets D's and F's...take "medicinal speed" (which would make most kids worse) and suddenly they become a 3.0 student??
and even if it is a made up disorder.......adderall got me into...and through college! without it i would be working construction for the rest of my life, and now i have a chance to have a real job....well, construction or the military..ewww...
J/K CHRIS! i had to say it....

LOL, if no one was in the military, you wouldn't be able to live your drug altered life in freedom. As far as the results, adderall helps normal people do better as well, as recently portrayed on Hawthorne and some stupid other show about normal kids getting prescriptions, and now there is talk about it being like a mental steroids and how it should be eliminated for scholarship students. I am not a physically strong guy, but give me some steroids, and some gym time, and I could be just as strong as the best of them. Drugs have a very similar result as the brainwashing we do in our school. We do it without drugs, instead we control the environment and discipline. You would be surprised how much more effective discipline is than drugs. Making you stay up late, clean, and do other mundane tasks is great incentive to perform when no one has ever held you accountable before. America is in a rut of "it isn't your(my) fault", and no one is ever held responsible for their actions, that makes my job as an instructor much more difficult.
But I am glad you are successful, but you give yourself too little credit, you don't need pills to succeed, they just help you at first, it is all you brother, not some pharmaceutical concoction. Never forget that.

ah, dont get defensive my friend....both of my best friends joined the navy right out of high school...one is recently out and now goes to school and the other is on tour #2 in iraq... i have plenty of respect for military people, i just like to jab you ;)
and i lack want to learn certain subjects in school because i believe that i can achieve the same results in life without learning them. so why fill my brain with information that i will never use? save room for becoming extremely skilled at things that will get me far in life, or are hobbies. adderall just helps me pass the classes that i slack in ;)
sorry for the TJ billy!
back to your regularly scheduled program! :_beer:
