I've been through the search and can't figure out the exact size speakers. I believe what I am reading is we are equipped with four 5.5" speakers and the tweeters, am I correct on this?

I ask because I jus got a notice in the mail on my "stimulus" check and have decided I'm gonna put it towards a stimulating system in my Bumble-V.
From what I've read, we have 5.5" speakers but with minimal trimming 6.5" speakers have been installed.
I know I could do this myself as I've installed systems in many of my past cars, but I would rather have a professional do it because, well, I really like my VX and dont wanna mess anything up. And I dont want to damage the panels, I havent even attempted to remove them yet. I know they will install the head unit, amp, sub and Bluetooth. But since installing larger speakers will include cutting metal and (I'm guessing) screwing the new speakers into new metal I'm afraid of being denied service or having to sign a "if anything goes wrong we are not liable" agreement.
So I'm considering myself a noob even though I've done all this before. Would this be a job a noob could do or should I let the big boys at the stereo shop handle everything?
any advice on this?

It's just a matter of choice not expertise.

You have the experience from other installs so I'd say you're plenty qualified. Since it's your rig, you'll give the install much more TLC than the big box store would. Remember, those places may be expert on the systems being installed but you have vastly more experience in the VX than they.

Just be prepared - these installs are NEVER 'plug & play'. You will probably have to do some fab work even if the speakers are supposed to be a direct replacement.

All this is IMHO. I'm NOT an expert.

As a noob myself, I say go half way. Removal of the door panels (which I haven't done yet) and rear panels (which I have only done the passenger side, as yet, just to see what is involved), seems to be simply a matter of patience. Patience and gentle care is not a virtue of installers. I would suggest removing the panels yourself and seek professional help from there.

I hope to do speakers front and rear soon. I want to get the largest front and rears as possible as I'm not yet ready to do a separate bass box or cut into the spare tire cover, though that install looks great and makes sense. I would like to do a spare woofer if I could retain the spare donut in there. Has anyone accomplished this or has everyone removed the donut?

My donut & mount were removed by PO so I'm not sure of the space remaining in there. My guess would be that there is only 1-2" between the cover & the spare which is much less than you would need for a sub.

BTW, the door panels are much easier to remove than the rear panels. The first time you do it takes 10-15 minutes but after that, you can have it off in 5. Rowhard has a how to with pix.

The door panel removal write-up is great. I want to order some extra clips before I try and I want to be ready to replace the speakers.

The spare is a concave tractor tire turned around. I would think you could get a narrowed-rear, 8" surface mount to fit in there. The trim wouldn't support the speaker, so mounting could be fun for a surface-mount. Definately not in my immediate future.

front speakers are 5.5.. 6.5s fit if you cut the back of the trim ring off then sand away the inner edge of except for places for your screws

the rear speakers are 4" 6.5s will fit back there but it takes a lot of cutting/custom work.. theres not much area left on the speaker mount after cutting

to the subwoofer guys.. look into the pioneer spare tire mounted subwoofer.. its universal meant for regular sized spare tires.. im almost positive it would fit in ours.. only mod needed for that is i think a longer bolt to hold the spare into place.. shouldnt be too hard (ive never seen one personally.. just heard about them installed in other cars)

other than that im pretty sure that ive seen one mounted in a spare tire custom... cant remember where i saw it though..


and i would agree with the consensus here.. removing the panels is pretty easy if u get the panel removing tool and take your time (make sure to use some heat or a hot day or your plastic will be brittle) putting them back in is what sucks.. so do most of the work yourself then if you really cant get something back on go to a good install place and offer them a reasonable amount to put the panels back on for you
