"Please post pictures of VX's with aftermarket RIMS & TIRES. So we can have a reference of what looks good!"

I would set myself up for more ABUSE because????

If I ever figure out the manufacturer or specs on my rims, I'll join in. They were put on by PO & he never responded to my query for info.

Tom

BTW, you may want to reference the thread on lift wiki.

ok, while we are talking about rims...i think i have it figured out what i want...but i cant seem to find a website that allows you to specify offset and backspacing and such....

is there a good place where you can choose different rims and set your own backspacing and offset???

Richie,
Who do think has 18mm offset?
I made the other changes and I will add your link at the bottom of the list.
As far as Jay's offset, I went to Mickey Thompson's site MT Classic Lock (http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/wheels.php?item=ClassicLock) 16x8 6-5.5 are only available in (-12mm).

Richie,
Who do think has 18mm offset?
I made the other changes and I will add your link at the bottom of the list.
As far as Jay's offset, I went to Mickey Thompson's site MT Classic Lock (http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/wheels.php?item=ClassicLock) 16x8 6-5.5 are only available in (-12mm).

Thanks,
Gene

Hey Gene, sorry didn't see this... my bad.

Jays wheels I don't believe could be -12mm, Even if that's all they are [currently] offered at. I think Ryan (little beast) can help me out a bit, but here's how it goes. (My understanding, please anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Stock wheels +18mm offset, anything less than that pushes the outward from the vehicle. If my wheels are at +10mm offset, and stick out quite a bit, then anything that sticks out less than mine would have to be between 10mm and 18mm Positive offset. Which is why I believe some of the early posted wheels are incorrect.

I think that Tom4Bren is at a 0 to +5mm offset, I'm at a +10mm and Beast is at +15mm, so based on images of our setups you could get a pretty close guess as to what people's Offset are.

:)

Of course this makes the assumption that we all have wheels between the widths of 7" - 8.5", my wheels are 8.5" wide.

========= A little advice ============
To those of you who posted images of your vehicle, and Rickshaw has already added you to his posts, I recommend deleting your original post (or editing it) so the images aren't posted twice.

This thread is really taking off!! Good Job Rickshaw!!

I think you may be right, I made some photoshop overlays to compare offsets.

Jay's 305/70/16 (-12) vs stock (+38) 245/60-18
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh322/rickshaw_VX/VX%20Rims%20and%20Tires/Jayvsstock.jpg

Little Beast 33x12.5R20 (+15) vs stock (+38) 245/60-18
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh322/rickshaw_VX/VX%20Rims%20and%20Tires/Littlebeastvsstock.jpg

Taylor Richie 33x12.5R20 (+10) vs stock (+38) 245/60-18
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh322/rickshaw_VX/VX%20Rims%20and%20Tires/TaylorRichievsstock.jpg

Calculator didn't have 33x12.5R20 so came as close in width as I could.

The side view of Jay's offset does look like (+12) not (-12).
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/VX_Pics_014.jpg

Time to get Jay's input on this.
I will remove offsets on Jay's for now.

Rickshaw,
once again, great work on the overlays, really helps us visual learners. Yes I would agree Jay's rims look to be around +12 to maybe even a +10 or +8, definitely not -12.

I have to respectfully disagree with some of what is said. I KNOW that my wheels are +12mm because when I ordered them I was shooting for +10mm since Daver had what I liked in stance. I'm also a stickler for re-checking part #'s on things I order to be sure I received what I asked for. The American Racing wheels I received were the same part# I ordered so in theory if I ordered 12mm offset I should have received 12mm offset.

Also, Baxman had (0) degrees offset and that put his wheels even further out as far as wheelwell is concerned compared to Daver's. More trimming of cladding there!

The stock wheels were +38mm offset IIRC. So looking at all of this as a number-line and that backspacing specs are constant....going from +38mm (tires tucked up under wheel-wells on O.E.M. wheel) to +12mm,+10mm (outer edge of tire lines up with edge of wheel-well lip) to zero offset (outer edge of tire begins to exceed past edge of wheel-well lip) to negative offset going from low to high (say -5mm out to -15mm) results in ever-wider stance with wheels pushed out past fender wheel-well lip.

I look at Jay Dunford's VX and see no problem visualizing -12mm of offset. His tires are out past the fender wheel-well lip whereas mine at +12 mm pretty much line up with edge of fender wheel-well lip. (critical in PA as fines result if tires stick out past fender wheel-well lip.)

Now where I'm not too sure....is how changes in backspacing figures into the mix. I suspect that is what is confusing us somewhat here in that backspacing may be changing on the various wheel styles???? IIRC my wheels are 4.5" backspacing.

Also, mm's are pretty small increments of measurement. When I was trying to pick out wheels that appealed to me AND were @ 10mm offset like Daver's VX; I really wanted the American Racing "Nitro" wheel. But, the closest offset it came in was zero! So, I picked the "Breaker" wheel as it was quite similar to the "Nitro" (kind of like a cousin..lol) and it was offered at 12mm offset. Only a difference of 2mm....and that was to the good in my book in that it was 2mm closer to stock....less likely for the tire to stick out past the fender wheel-well & get fined!

If I'm wrong here guys...I'm truly sorry...as this is how I perceive it and I'm not trying to mislead anyone.

P.S.--thanks Rickshaw for posting my newest pic + info and putting together an awesome thread!

This thread is great. If we had "stickies" on this forum I would say this should be up there forever! I hope this thread helps a lot of people looking for aftermarket rims and tires.

Here are two more you should add. You will have to PM the owners for their specs, but I thought I would help out with photos:

Sorry that I can't find any specs on my wheels. It's too difficult to make the measurements with the tires mounted on the rims. I did take one measurement that may be of interest tho: the dish is 8" deep. That's measured from the outer bead to the mounting surface of the rim.

I'll try one more time to get the rim info from the PO.

+12mm on a 20x8 is different than +12mm on a 20x8.5, etc. Also "where" your tires sticks out to has A LOT to do with the width of your tire. Mine happen to be 12.5" wide and hence they stick out further on my +15 offset rims than would a 11.5" tire, etc. If you look at my gallery when I was test fitting my 20x8.5 +15mm rims before I put tires onto the rims, the rims were almost perfectly in line with the front cladding, may have been a few millimeters outside of the cladding, and since the torsion bar crank pulls the front wheels just slightly in closer to the VX the rears were sticking out from the VX around 5mm more than the front, picture for reference:
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/NewRim21.jpg
And here you can see the rear tires sticking out just ever so slightly more than the fronts because of the degree of the Control Arms after lifting:
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/VXmodifications_024.jpg
And no it is not just because of the angle of the photo, at whichever angle you look at it from the rear or front you can see just a slight difference on each side front/back, but I am talking a small difference (3-5mm).

Yes right on, except as you can see in my photo from above, a 20x8.5" rim with +15mm offset lines up the edge of the rim almost exactly with the edge of the cladding, down to maybe 1 or 2mm sticking out on front at the most, which means my 12.5" tires would be almost 2" wider than this on the inside and outside, so a 0 offset at anything around the same 8.5" rim that I have would indeed push not just the tire outside the wheel well, but it would in fact push the rim edge itself to outside the cladding not just the tire.

The reason I agree that his offset is around +10 or so is because the amount of tire sticking out looks almost identical to Taylor(+10) and myself (+15). But his tires are .5" more narrow than ours, so that is why I thought the rims might be all the way down to a +8mm or so. But you are right that his wheels were indeed a little further out than mine. I say were because if anyone was wondering Jay is now riding in style in his blacked out FJ Cruiser.

Now where I'm not too sure....is how changes in backspacing figures into the mix. I suspect that is what is confusing us somewhat here in that backspacing may be changing on the various wheel styles???? IIRC my wheels are 4.5" backspacing.

Here is a chart that might simplify the whole offset to backspacing thing:
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/515/tech-wheeloffset.gif
From the chart if your rims are +12mm offset and 4.5" backspacing then your rims would be 7" wide, but that does not sound right either, how were you measuring your backspacing or were you given those numbers?

Thank you for a very clear, concise, well-written explanation to the subject at hand! kudo's. Very good chart which should come in handy for alot of VX'ers! (myself included!)

What prompted me to post (earlier) was the implication that some of the posted offset info was wrong (possibly mine being one of them.) So I spoke up mainly to draw attention to the fact that I knew my info (+12mm) was correct.

The backspacing info I gave (4.5") was in error (actually 5"); but, hopefully I covered my butt with the ole IIRC

Here is the wheel specs for my particular wheel for demo: (#614-6883)

:) Yours were never in question... only the "0" or "Negative" offset wheels that look "normal" 0 or negative would stick out far no matter how you slice it :)

I believe our center bore is 100mm, but most wheels (mine included) come in a 108mm center bore. (for GMs)

:) Yours were never in question... only the "0" or "Negative" offset wheels that look "normal" 0 or negative would stick out far no matter how you slice it :)

The only thing I can say, is the the Chambers myself and a few other VXers have are a 0 offset with 4.5" backspacing and the tires/wheels do not stick out that far at all. IMO, the 0 offset pushes the look out just right. They look perfect.

Amen to that. I love my stance. They protrude but it is very tasteful IMHO. One reason I was so determined NOT to lift. Didn't want that extra well space to take away from it.

Yeah the open space in mine really bothers me but its tough saving money for new tires, especially ones I want(that’s the hard part soo many decisions).

Once again though guys, a 0 offset on a 8" wide rim with 11-11.5" wide tires looks a TON different than a 0 offset 8.5"-9" wide rim with 12.5" wide tires. Especially when you have the Mudd Grapplers that if you take a tape measure to are actually 12.5" wide from outside of tire to inside of tire (I checked yesterday, lol). Basically my +15mm offset rims and 12.5" tires actually stick out FURTHER from the cladding than your 0 offset, just because of the other variables, as I have stated before my personal opinion is anything around 1.5"-2" of tire sticking out from the fender looks awesome, and I would say both you and Wormgod are in that ballpark. And the width of your respected tires is 265(10.5"), and 285(11.25") and add to that Wormgod's rims are a full .5" larger than yours and you can see the difference between you two in the pictures, now imagine a 12.5" tire on top of that, in fact a full 1.25"(.75" on each side) more hanging off the rim than Wormgod's tires and a full 2"(1" on each side) more than your tires and you can see why a 12.5" wide tire on a 8.5" rim with 0 offset would look way different than what you guys are running, and in my opinion get into the "wow something is not quite right there" area. But yeah 0 offset on an 8-8.5" rim with a 11" tire looks just right (as far as offset goes). But when thinking of what offset you need for the look you are going for the width of the tire and rim are huge factors that should be decided on before deciding on offset/backspacing.

I agree, wasn't trying to argue or anything, just saying I love my rim/tire combo. :p

I believe our center bore is 100mm, but most wheels (mine included) come in a 108mm center bore. (for GMs)

Just wanted to post this thread that deals with the center bore issue amongst other things that can go wrong on custom wheels.

It's a matter of "getting it just the way you want it". It not only just a matter of just what will work, but, what will you "like". I ran on the stockers with 285/60s for about a year before my 8.5s. Visually, I hated it. If you are gonna have a lot of rubber in your wells, you may as well make it count. My original plan was to get some larger rims and tires and lift. I even got the rear springs. However, after the wheel and tire mount, I was sold without the lift. Hell, I have had that pair of springs in my garage for about 4-5 years now, heh.

As for going wider than 11" or so on an 8.5', that is a hell of a task. I tire mounted in a previous life and any tire more than 2" wider than a wheel is not only a b|tch to mount, but not very savory for daily road use. Visually, you are right. That is where you come to the "wow something is not quite right there". :o

Regardless of whatever route anyone takes, doing some research and asking questions is needed. We have had too many members here buy wheels and/or tires just come to find out they aren't gonna work or they don't look "quite right". This thread should end up getting cleaned up and getting stickied eventually. :)

These are my 2nd set of wheels that I’m going to use as off road beaters. They’re 15x8 mid 90s American racers. They barely clear the calipers. The way I see it you want the smallest wheel with the biggest tire if you want to play in the sand and slick rock. The only thing I worry about is catching a rock between the caliper and the wheel.

I want to give a huge shout out to Riff Raff for all his research on the best tire for the Vx, at 44lbs and under 150 dollars, this tire is amazing, and should easily dethrone the terra grappler, if you can get ahold of these tires, they are on national back order at most retailers.

Yeah but at the 275 width instead of the Terra Grapplers 285 width, they do not look half as good in my opinion, and the Terra Grapplers side wall pattern is more attractive in my opinion, to each his own, I would definitely still pick the Terra Grapplers over those especially since I know how many ridiculous miles I got out of those things ;)

Thanks Bart, too bad you took the racing stripe idea;) My safari rack is somewhat unique as well, it's not the normal square/rectangle shape, and its stamped with a large "X" at each junction,

It should fit the unique curves of the Vx perfectly. I will of course post new pics when its on.
As far as the Terra Grapplers, I think of them like Nikes, everyone gets them cause the swoosh on the side...lol. If I could have put any tire I wanted, I would have gone with the Toyo Mud Terrain, that's my favorite as far as looks go, but for a daily driver, no way!!!!

No offense taken "NFNTRUTH79" (tit4tat). I'm just glad that "total piece of junk" of yours found the best possible home to bring it back to life!!! Job well done. It just goes to prove that a little TLC goes a long way. Your Proton looks simply dazzling, and those Grabber AT2's are just awesome at only 44 lbs, and under $150. I don't know guys, but my mind keeps popping in new ideas about wheels & tires set.

Today i saw one of those BMW X5 with the upgrade wide wheels & tires.

After that moment my thoughts were.hmmmm. my VX would probably looks very peppy with a set of two 20x10'' wheels at rear & 20x8" at the front.

Did any of you guys had a set up done like that before ?

Will this set up cause any down fall on the VX performance.

I haven't choose any set of wheels and tires so far, however i got few on my list.

While I can't say for sure, but wouldn't staggering the wheel size have enough of a weight difference to cause the TOD to be unhappy?

That, & the difference in drag, rolling resistance, & or traction would also be contributing factors to making the TOD possibly "freak".

I guess it's not a good idea though !

I'm playing with two wheel sizes the 20x9 or 18.8.5 all around, but i don't want go lifted if the 20x9 is the choosen size.

American racing have two nice models; The Jr cannon in silver & black & the assault also in silver & black which blend perfectly with my VX.

But yet still is somehow hard to me to believe that adding 20 x 10" at rear & 20 x 8,5 or 9 " at the front can deffinetly make the TOD freak because of the dragging, the sizes difference aren't so huge + the weight can't be more then 1 pound.

However i'll research for more info about this, make few calls here n' there for expertise opinion. Thank you guys !

The problem you also might have is getting even wear when you rotate the tires. Obviously rears will have to stay rears and fronts will have to stay fronts, so you may wear tires out slightly faster.

Why is that hard to believe, when a 3-4 psi difference in inflation pressure in tires of the same size will cause the TOD to malfunction?

Mike,

Sweet ride & a fellow VA VX'r. What are the specs on your wheel/tire combo?

It may just be the angle the pic was taken but you look slightly 'nose down' (IMHO). You can level her out with a few cranks of the torsion bars.

Updated Info:
After it rolled the Insurance replaced the rims with the new style.
The difference?
Old style(the lugs stuck a bit outside the lug holes, enough for someone to use something to steal them).
The new style( the lugs sets completely inside the lug holes so that unless you use a lug wrench or lug key on the locks, the rims aren't coming off).
Best rims I ever had on a Daily driver that are legal.
They are reverse mounted rims(meaning the tires have to be mounted from the back side as the front side of the rims are alot wider in diameter than the back side).

Thanks Ldub ! :)

Actually i got very confident with those tires, yesterday night i drove to eastern long island on the sourthen state parkway here in NY for some clubbing & drove around 75/80 miles per hour sweeping thru tight curves with amazing grip to the road.

After hitting the club's valet parking a guy & his girl on a all-new acura TL pull in right after me & saying about how he never saw a SUV cornering at that speed,he ask about the VX & told him few tips about it.

The rims has about - 12mm off set, stands out about half a inch outter the cladding wheel wells.

This is a great thread but are there any photo's of mud tyres on stock rims?

My plan is to either use my 3 piece split rims or put 30mm spacers on my stock 16" rims and some bigger tyres. Would love to see some photo's if you have any

about offset, I ordered motto metal 20x9 909's +18 offset w/33x12.5 nitto mud grapplers. They sent the wrong offset, got -12. Tried them on and they stuck out simular to the kaiser mystery owner pic a little above this post. Out almost 3" or 7cm"s. Expected them to stick out more after reading many posts but not the look I want. Sending wheels back, have new ones on tues.

I was hoping my picture would be up. Those rims are for sale, so the setup will be changing soon. I really like Rickshaw's XD rims and may end up with those. BTW, I currently have 2" of lift by having a 2" spacer in the coils. The PO did that, but I plan on putting the 912s on when I get the new wheels. :dan_ban:

Where are you pulling the pictures of the "mystery owners" rides from?

I only ask because about halfway down the page is a white IronMan with chrome twenties and mirror tint...well this is mine and the picture was at my old work but I never took this picture.

JHarris1385,
I have been using image searches on Google, Yahoo and Bing (http://www.bing.com/)

I found this Ironman on a Scion Forum (http://www.scionati.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=872)

Oh, neat! Mine's already up. Goodyear Duratrac 265 75 R16 (31.7in).

OME 912 & Torsion Bar (9 cranks).

Wheels are American Racing Teflon Victors. 0 Offset. Trimmed front and banged in back of the front wheelwells just a little bit.

Most everything I did I tried to ape others on the forum, so I wouldn't run into any issues that I'd have to fix myself :). The Victors are the same exact size and offset as the Teflon CHambers that are sold out everywhere. I've basically copied nfpgasmask through the years; the Victors were AR Chamber substitutes in the same exact dimensions, and I initially had General Grabber AT2 245 75 R16 to match his BFG ATs. When I did the OME 912s, I aped his as well, but moved to the Duratracs because I didn't want a full MT. His and crotchrocket's were the inspiration for the lift and tire size I finally got to. I can't find any pics of my old General Grabber AT2 at stock height that doesn't have the tires covered in mud:
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/medium/kdk_0077.jpg

After the lift and new bigger tires:

To visually see if the wheels would look good on a Proton, there are various tire sites on the web that will "electronically" put the wheels on a Proton VX so you can see what they look like on your computer screen. This is a good way to visually check before you actually buy them.

For a tire that has "matching" Skull & Crossbones, check-out the DICK CEPEK - "CRUSHER" which has Skull & Crossbones actually molded into the tire sidewall as functional side-biters!!! It would make both wheels and tires totally match with the same exact theme. However, the D.C. - "CRUSHER" is only available in 15", 16", 17" size tires (no 18" tire is available). See them at www.TireRack.com:bgwb:

I noticed my truck is half way up the page here. My wheels are American Racing Atx Mojave Coated w/ Teflon, 16x8. Purchased from Tire Rack.

I had to use the lugs to center them on the hub because the center caps are larger than the stock rims. I went with them because they reminded me of the 1980's trooper rims. They rock!

Another inch of lift came courtesy of some 2" coil spacers in the rear, (Thanks Boss) and another 3 1/2 turns on the T-bars in front.
A LOT of fender liner/fender flare surgery, + lots of :smack: were required to enable full lock turns under suspension compression, so if you're squeamish about cutting up your VX, stay with the smaller rubber...:smilewink

I also had to shorten up my rock sliders by a couple of inches.

needed a good trim in back and a BFH pounding but it was easy and looks fine.

Really like those Nismo rims, but is there any way to take the Nismo logo off of them? If Nissan Motorsports = Nismo, what does Isuzu Motorsports = ? Maybe Isuzumo?

PS: On many Nissan/Toyota forums you'll also see this:

Nissan Motorsports = Nismo, Honda Motorsports = ?

The NISMO lettering is just stickers, so they'll be coming off before too long. At the price I got them for, it could say PISSMO for all I care. :winkgray:

ya thats one hell of a wax job.....lol....;)

Wax on - wax off, gasmask san...:smilewink

Yours can't look like that cuz you...OFF-ROAD!

I'm with Bart; how come my VX doesn't get that clean. I saw that picture and it looks like the paint is liquid. Nice job!!
Actually, it's not the waxing, it's the effort put into polishing before the wax. You have to get the clearcoat layer smooth first, or no amount of wax is going to make much difference.

3M Clearcoat Polish on a sponge buffing pad with a simple low-speed orbital buffer is all I've ever used, and yes, I did it myself.

I don't know if it's all that different from the polish you can buy at a place like Autozone, Pepboys, etc, but I was directed to a local automotive paint supplier by an autobody guy at a Ford dealership years back, and it's what I've used on my vehicles ever since.

That was years ago though, and hopefully formulations have improved even more, but it's clearcoat polish, not glaze, wax, buffing compound, etc.

It's the only thing I've ever used that results in a continuous "wet paint" look...that isn't from the drool. :drool2:

Oh sure, wax is the final step, it just seemed like everyone was assuming that wax was the ONLY step.

I also use one of the clay bar kits on occasion to remove surface contaminants, but that's so the finish will "feel" smooth. In my opinion though, it's the polish that makes it "look" smooth.

I'll check my local auto paint shop. I'm sure they sell something that would work the same.

Any more specific details on your products and process would be excellent. Do you wash the VX first with like dish soap? I've heard doing that will cut grease and old wax better than regular auto soap.

Sorry for this thread jack.

This is how the bottle is labeled.

3M Liquid Polish - Clearcoat Safe
Part# - 051131-05993
1 U.S. quart

I should say though that this bottle was purchased quite a few years ago, so it's possible this exact product/formulation may no longer be available. If not, I suppose a paint supplier may be able to cross reference the number to something similar that is currently available.

As far as washing beforehand, I've heard the same thing about using liquid dish soap, and think I may have even used it in the past, but I've used a few different car wash products over the years, so I don't know that anything specific is really necessary as long as the surface is clean of anything that might act as an abrasive. And if old wax is more thoroughly removed before polishing, less polish would probably be necessary too.

As far as polishers go, it would depend on which vehicles you plan to use it on. I used to use a 9 or 10 inch Craftsman low-speed orbital because my other vehicle has body panels with larger surface areas, but I picked up a cheap 6 inch low-speed orbital that worked better on the VX because the only "larger" body panel areas were the roof, the doors, and sections of the rear quarters. Neither polisher was anything special either. The 10 inch Craftsman probably cost about $40, and the six inch was around $25. Whichever one you choose though, just make sure that foam pads are available in that size, because I've also tried, cotton, terry cloth, and microfiber pads, and foam always yielded the best results in my opinion.

While this isn't the exact one I got last time (the Titan 6"), it was something similar, and like I said, nothing really special.

Autozone buffer (http://images.solidcactus.com/autobarn/6-inch-car-buffer.jpg)

Waxes? I've used Mequires, Blitz, and even tried the Turtle Wax Ice stuff for awhile. The only thing I've learned is that it's always the polishing process that's made the most difference, and paste wax seems to last a little longer than the liquid stuff. Aside from that, it's just personal preference IMO.

Round Aluminium Things: 20" x 8" Centerline Tomahawk Rapid - 5" backspacing, large centerbore (polished, not chrome)
Big Rubber Things: 35" x 12.50" x 20" Nitto Mud Grapplers

Another inch of lift came courtesy of some 2" coil spacers in the rear, (Thanks Boss) and another 3 1/2 turns on the T-bars in front.
A LOT of fender liner/fender flare surgery, + lots of :smack: were required to enable full lock turns under suspension compression, so if you're squeamish about cutting up your VX, stay with the smaller rubber...:smilewink

I also had to shorten up my rock sliders by a couple of inches.

I have another sumpin'-sumpin' up my sleeve, that'll be seen soon...:naughty:

I'll post more pics in the next day or two or three after I get her all scrubbed up & waxed....:yesgray:

Is it normal for the TOD to light up more with the bigger (mine are 18's) rims?

No that is not normal unless you did something unthinkable like drive the VX with different size tires or rims on front or back at any time. But no you will not get any TOD problems due to increase in wheels size as long as all 4 tires/wheels are identical.

What it is more specifically is that when I used to have the old 16's on, the TOD would not light up (past one bar) unless it really was pushed (rain, sand, etc...). Now with the new 18's, when I am doing a little harder than normal acceleration in first or second gear, I will get three bars of TOD for a split second. I was wondering if that was normal...

Mine does it if I accelerate hard. Doesn't bother me but probably not normal. I usually don't accelerate hard anyways.

I painted my factory 16's this weekend.

Lifted w/ OME 912's and Daystar spacers in rear, torsion bar crank and differential drop in front
Tires are Definity Dakota 285/75's (33" OD)

Paint color is Gun Metal Grey Metallic. It's a GM color according to the can. Bought it at Autozone, along with adhesion promoter, primer, truck bed coating gritty black and clear coat sealer.

The truck bed coater gives it a nice rough texture and hides all the imperfections associated with painting in your driveway on a windy day! Put that down over the primer, and the paint coats over that and it works perfectly!!!

I'll have to get a picture of them in the sun, as the metal flakes make them a little lighter in direct light.

Those wheels are pretty sweet. I am concerned about your height. Do you wheel it? If so, you must only have about 3" of wheel travel in the front, GREATLY reducing offroad capability, especially without a front locker.

Nah, I play in the dirt and mud when I can, but nothing serious. I have looked into the front ball joint flips and different bump stops, but I'll most likely not be doing anything real serious any time soon.

But I did find a nice set of Warn manual hubs that I hope fit in Planetisuzoo. Then at least if I get into anything real gnarly they will be the first, and cheapest, thing to snap. Like an inline fuse! I also wanted one of the super flexy IFS kits but can't afford one of those for what I do with the truck.

The tires look pretty whitebread in this image but they're really sharp in person. The Snowflakes have a neutral offset, resulting in the whole unit sitting about an inch and a half proud of the wells. Much thanks to Riffraff for help in selecting them.

Snowflakes are nice, that is what I have in the garage for the wifes Trooper RS mudders. I now have 4 sets of wheels and tires to fit the 2 Zus....lol. Two sets of ATs, one set alright, the other set less than 1K miles. Two sets of mudders, my Kevlars and her treadwrights. Bring on the Zombie revolution!!!!

Ball joint flip does not improve wheel travel, only facilitates alignment. As for the bumpstops, be careful, they are there for a reason. The protect the CV shaft from impacting the lower control arm, I believe Uncle SAS has a story about that.

The SFIFS only works if you lower the front back down. No sense in forcing 3-4" of wheel travel, that is a waste. When I installed mine, I moved back to near stock height with 34s. Minimal rubbing, and some minor pounding/cutoff wheel in the front.

I used to be like you with the cranked up front end. Crappy handling and crappy ride offroad. Without a locker, you just greatly reduced your performance since you a very likely to have a front tire off the gournd (rock crawling, if for mud, I suppose it doesn't matter). I love the look of it jacked up, but its kind of like having fancy skater shoes, they don't really help you at all, just make you look cool:bgwb:

Bob Barker

LoL at the skater shoes :D

I have thougt about lowering the front, maybe a half inch or so because there is still a tiny bit of the grinding noise when I decelerate or let off the gas. Only for about half a second. I may try stuffing a little more greast into the inner boots to see if that will quieten them down some. If that doesn't work I'll just have to drop it 1/2 till it stops. But I don't want to, cause I love the look and it's probably only ever going to see beach/mud for off road duty. I'll dream of Moab, and probably never make it that far.

ISUMO its just so perfect.. lol

Dang...Don't know that I've seen 22's w/o a lift (in this thread). OTOH, Seems I read where 33's will fit stock height suspension? I'm guessing you've got some rubbing or turning issues...maybe because of the width/offset?

Nice looking wheels!

The width and offset isnt to bad they stick out a tad but just enough to make it look good. I did have to trim the inside front some. and well pull out the BFH mod on the back of the well, and with some cosmetic cover up to pull it off. No rubbing or turn issues :)

Did you have OEM wheels before? If so, I'd be interested in your thoughts of MPG before and after the swap. (Still trying to decide whether stock or larger tires get the best MPG results.)

Kinda leaning toward smaller for city driving and larger for HWY? IDK.

Pk those aint no rubberbands ! The roads arent horrible here but not to many smooth. Ride is nice in these even with potholes and such. I used to run 285/35/22 so this is a nice improvement.

Yes Vette i run my stocks for winter which are 285/60/18 so the mpgs arent that different maybe 1-2 less. I do a combo of constant highway and city.

The 32's give you lower mileage or vica-versa?

I agree, those don't quite qualify as rubber bands. They are still manageable by tire pressure. I'm guessing 3-4lbs less than stock feel about the same?

BTW...Here's what ya call "rubber bands"....
