View Full Version : De-red the interior?

I'm thinking about getting a VX and a lot of the VXs I've seen have the red interior and I just can't seem to be able to come to grips with a red interior (no offense to those who like it!).

Has anyone successfully gotten rid of the red?? (dyed...or whatever)

there are quite a few of 2000 and 2001s that aren't red

the best looking "dye" job i have seen was done by silverbullet... he just did the door panels but it did wonders for the interior feel...

of course you can always go the other direction like vx4ejr too...

If I'm not mistaken, someone with a Proton VX redid their interior and it looked pretty sharp.
Peace.

you should be able to dye over the red leather with black (seats).

Thanks Etlsport :)

99VC bought that VX from the guy I sold it to.
I believe he does not like the look and is looking for someone to trade/sell their originals.
The best thing about the door panels is that they are all plastic. If you want to recolor them, I recommend getting a paint that "etches" into the plastic. (If you want the brand I used, let me know... I still have the can down in the garage.) You aren't even supposed to use a primer. I do feel bad that I never got around to "completing" the job before I sold it. It could have used a good "cut-n-buff" on the red parts. When it comes to the leather though, I have no idea. I avoided that part. Hope this helps. Oh, btw.. I have a pic of the door panels in almost (minus the map pocket) all black if you want to see what it would look like. Let me know. ---JIM---

I can't for the life of me remember whose that was, but I agree - that Proton was bada$$... Door panels were painted Proton yellow to match the exterior, and there was a custom fiberglass enclosure with amps and 3 subwoofers. I searched for pictures but couldn't find any. I'm sure someone here remembers who the owner of that one was...

Another option for changing the seats would be to purchase some leather "skins" custom made for those seats. On another forum I used to spend time on they did a group buy with a company out of Vancouver, BC that designed patterns and offered replacement skins in a variety of color combinations. Since most of our seats are in the 8-10 year old range now (unless they were replaced of course ;)) there might be some interest in this if someone wanted to locate a company and provide their seats for designing the pattern... Just a thought. ;Db;

While that one does look very sharp, it's not the one I was thinking of. This one had painted interior panels and a really tricked out audio system. Man, that proton yellow carpet must be hard to keep clean!!

Go with a VX with Grey/black interior.

Too complicated and expensive. Go buy a leather dye kit off the net. I've done it several times. Costs about $100 and turns out great. Use google.

You get what you pay for. Buy the best if you want to do that because some of the cheaper brands run not good, they just do not hold up to the sliding in and out of the veihicle. Just look for one with the grey interior. PLEASE!!

OK, how 'bout seat re-upolstery kits? Does someone offer real leather replacement covers??

probably.. they are not custom made seats... they are Recaro Trend seats search for seat heaters to find out what is involved in taking the seats apart
