View Full Version : Full size spare in back with seats?
When I bought my VX new Nitto Terra Grapplers this Christmas I kept the best tire for a full size spare. Had already bought a rim a while back for this purpose so now my problem is where do I haul the spare?
I don't have the roof rack and so far have had it just sitting in the back, with the seats up. I saw several others put a full size spare back there with the seats down and net it to the floor.
Anyone come up with a good solution for storing it in the back and keeping the rear sets folded down? I do have to haul the family occasionally so removing the rear seats isn't an option.

Hmmm, I wonder if you could make something simple to hold the tire upright? Like a pipe in a flange that is bolted to the floor in the back, with an elbow on it and another length of pipe to go through the center bore and then something on the other side to tighten it all down. :_huh:
Did that make sense???
Edit: Or, what about a tube that you somehow bolt to either side of the VX, through the trim (basically a horizontal bar) and then you could bolt or strap the spare to that piece??

Something like this that you mount upright:

Or better yet, like this:

So basically, you would need to somehow fix a square tube across the cargo area at the right height, and then you could mount the tire.
But, you are talking about limited space back there. Its going to be tough. I would just get a roof rack!!

You know how Jeeps have theirs on the back of the tailgate? How about removing our spare tire cover and creating some sort of bracket that would hold it inside?

of a full size tire mounted where the mini spare was. I beleive the owner had to cut the cladding to make it fit.

With the seat folded all the way forward you can simply lay it flat on the floor and ratchet strap it down using the hooks on the floor. With the seat just folded down you can do the same except the tire will sit on the floor and rear section of the seat. I use these methods whenever I go wheeling. If you need to use the seat you can put the tire vertical behind the seats (as long as you are not runing some ungoddly wide tires) and again strap it down so that it doesn't move. Of course you will have very little room for anything else back there.

Works great...
...as long as the hole is small enough!:bwgy:

Most flats can be easily fixed with a good puncher kit. Just be sure you have some water with you it makes it a lot simpler.

Thanks for all the ideas. I think I am going to go with the seats up, tire sitting vertically and just strap it down. Someday hopefully get a roof rack.
