Dobermans are just oversized lap dogs. And they rare to never bark which is nice. Takes some real excitement before he barks (or if I command him to "speak")

Just got off the phone with the nice folks at Red Rock Lodge.
I have room 112 tentatively booked for May 11-17 2009...
I say "tentatively" because they informed me that the "may" not be there any more by next May. Seems the joint is being leveled to make room for something taller.:sighwgray
I can't say for SURE that having a large block of rooms reserved by VX nut jobs would sway their decision in any way...but it couldn't hurt.

Awww... that's too bad :(
An alternate would be to rent out where Brit and I stayed.
JR Desert Inn I think is what it was called.
It only has 10 rooms total, they're decent and inexpensive (not red rock cheap) like $50/night. It's at the end of the main drag (south) Big porch patio.
Wonder when red rock will know.
Grrr...
I was looking forwarded to lounging in some Uggs in front of the red rock.

Moab, Utah... Off-road nirvana! The place is stunningly beautiful, and there are all kinds of trails (from mild to WILD) to explore the area. Isuzu drivers from all over the country (and some from other countries), meet there every May to hang out, do some wheelin', and party. There are plenty of threads here about past events, and pictures in the gallery. You can also search on YouTube for Moab VehiCROSS videos.
Welcome to the family! See you in May?

I've got 285/60/18 Nitto Terra Grapplers on mine. They have excellant traction in snow and heavy rain (you'll run out of visibility before you lose grip). On dry pavement, they grip well and aren't very noisy. Plus, when you do corner "enthusiastically" enough, they make the same sound as the tires on the Batmobile in "The Dark Knight"! (I realize that last item may only be interesting to me.... :) )

Ashley, seems the places to stay are 1. if you want to camp...Portal camp ground (anything from tent to class1 motor homes) 2. if you hotel it...the Red Rock Hotel.
As far as what to bring? That will be differant depending on who you ask and where you plan to stay. Search through some of the old Moab Zuzoo posts and you will find a lot of info. If you have any specific questions throw them out here and we will answer away! Hope to see you in May!

Ashley it is about 21 hours for me, but I have been there 7 times, it is THAT much fun. And I don't even have a VX. :bwgr: (Technically it is an all Isuzu event, but I think VXs were at least 80% of the crowd in 08. Not that there's anything wrong with that! )
There likely will be some opportunities to convoy. There are a couple of VXs in Chicago that you could hook up with in, say, Iowa City, or Lincoln, or at least Denver if you didn't want to miss out on that beautiful Kansas countryside (Nebraska is SO much more interesting :p ). And I am usually coming down to Des Moine from Minneapolis myself. I have convoyed from there westward with some of the Chicago crowd in the past.
This, of course, assumes I still have a job and can afford the trip :( but that pretty much goes without saying for anybody.
T'would be nice if gas prices stay this low for May 09...compared to near $4/gallon this year.
Dang, looks like I'm about 6 months too late to start thinking about Moab...

Heh, yeah...not enough headroom for me in a VX unless I position the driver's seat like a recliner. Makes it hard to reach the steering wheel! :p
Sheesh, were there any other Troopers in Moab in 08 other than me and Jim? Jim Paget didn't make it...Fernando showed but sans Trooper...Eiji wasn't there...

Wait, it sounds like you are asking if you can put 18" tires on 16" rims...if so, the answer should be no...AFAIK, the last number is the rim size, so 245 70/R16s fit 16" rims and 245 60/R18s fit 18" rims...

Yes or just get some knarly ones and wear the heck out of them and then buy another set when done and you still save money over buying 2 pairs now ;) The only knarly ones I like now are:

-BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2

A group of us shared a tent site at the Portal this year. Watch out for that crazy BigSwede, he’s a loud party animal.. ;)
And those obnoxious yappers Menace (the grey hound) and Cinder.
I enjoyed it. They have showers that are pretty clean and free which is nice. A pond for dogs and another pond for people. I only went this year and it turned out to be a bit chilly and rained so I don’t know what the tent camping would be like if its HOT.
My wife and I are on the fence. I would love to go again and so would she but money is soooo tight that we can hardly save. I might try to get a PT job to help save.

Well the Colorado River is about it...it is a desert
You can camp on BLM land for next to nothing (and no services whatsoever), but for more civilized camping I recommend Portal RV Park. They have individual and group tenting spots, restrooms, and best of all about 5 clean showers (cleaner than most campgrounds for sure). That will run you $8-10.50/day. There is also a lovely pond for my dog to cool off in.
Over the next few months we will need to figure out if a group site is in order, otherwise if two people share an individual site (plenty of room for multiple tents) it works out to $10.50 each per day. It is $8 per additional person after the first two.
This is my campsite last year, at a group site with the Reno VX crowd (they are out of the frame to the right)

Hey BigSwede I would like to take yea up on the offer for sharing a site to camp, as long as yea dont mind, some wild and crazy 20 somethings, lol JK not to wild-n-crazy!!!
Sounds fine to me...if plans (or...employment  ) change they only require 48 hours notice for cancellation so we could go ahead and reserve a site anytime. The price works out to about the same whether it is an individual site or group site. All of the tenting sites are all pretty close together anyway.
As far as partying, if it's anything like last year most of the party was at the Red Rock motel with Larry and crew...didn't spend a lot of time at the campground except to sleep. Might've been a campfire one night...
Portal also tends to be a bit of an organizing spot for trail runs.
How many nights you want to be out there? This is what I usually do: leave home on Saturday, overnight in Denver, hit the Rockie Mountains fresh in the morning and arrive Moab on Sunday afternoon to set up camp. The heart of the event is Wednesday - Saturday, although I think you VXers do your run on Tuesday(?). So then you have an extra day to sightsee, hike, go to Arches National Park (just down the road), shop in town, whatever. Depart the following Sunday and get home on Monday. So it is 7 nights of camping.

Some years it has been pretty hot, but it always cools down nicely after the sun goes down. Generally sunset coincides with the donning of the sweatshirts.

Are you bringing a road or mountain bike (you are talking the pedal type?)
I plan on getting to Moab Sunday night and will be renting a Mt. Bike from Poison Spider (http://www.poisonspiderbicycles.com/)bikes for a ride day on Monday. It might be cheaper to rent the bike there than to spend the extra $$ on gas if you carry the bike on a roof rack. It would be nice to have a few others join me. I have tons of bike fitness but not a lot of off road skills.
I will also be doing a few runs during the week and possibly hitting the local pool (http://www.moabcity.org/residents/FacilityDetail.cfm?mode=summary&id=1149436378328)for a few laps if any one is interested.:thumbup::thumbup:

Just a little info. There is a new Management Plan in Moab and there have been some changes to our trails. Seems like we loose and never get anything back. A few years ago we lost Onion Creek and now among others we have lost the ability to drive over Gemini Bridges so those that were there, savor the memory. You can still walk across but no longer drive across. I am now glad I took everyone there.
So the plan is this. VX run (as usual I won’t tell until the day of) on Tuesday May 12th with dinner at the Adams place (Pack Creek Campground) after the run and is also the meeting place in the morning. We will leave the camp at 9:00 am for the run. I am not requesting any beer this year, as way too much was provided last. This will be a pot luck dinner as last year. Larry’s pineapple bratwurst, were to die for. Linda and I will provide hamburgers and buns.
Just a reminder that the unofficial Isuzu event starts on Wednesday May 12th and goes though Saturday. I have no idea where headquarters are for the Isuzu event are but I am sure those at Portal RV will be in the know as usual.

I would say that half or more of the trails here and the major obsticles on them can be avoided. Your stock VX will perform just fine on many trails, but there will be an ocassional scrape heard from time to time. Between Todd and I and others, we will highlight the trails that come easy, moderate, or hard. I have been out here for awhile now and the hardest trail I have done with my VX (no lockers, just lifted and bigger tires) has been Strike Ravine. There are some obvious trails that I just won't touch though, Pritchet Canyon, Moab Rim, and some more of course.
If anyone would like info on the trails out here in more detail, just send me a note.

What was so hard about Strike? Last time I did it was for winter convention about 3 years ago. Even with the mud snow and ice it didn’t seem too bad. Many years ago the “Big Ugly” was difficult but it much easier now.

Well.... I am just saying it was the hardest one I have done so far and the obsticles couldn't be avoided. Not sure what the trail looked like 3 years ago, but this year..... it was tough. I am usually not to worried about breaking anything, but this one (only two sections) had me thinking about it. You know how these things are Todd... they are subjective.

and i guarantee that your trail leader wont take you on anything you cant do...
we have AMAZING trail leaders and spotters in this group...they make sure they take care of everyone...
for example: i let my girlfriend drive my VX for about 3/4 of a run last year (thats how much i trust our trail leaders) :)
I may be able to break free for Moab but my VX is stock with rancho 9000Xl shocks and 265/7016 tires. Can I wheel off-road where you guys go with no issues??
I would do some scrounging around in salvage yards to find some Trooper skid plates...my theory is: ya can't have too much protection "down there"...:smilewink
Search "skid plates" for what model years work. Also, check out Kenny's sweet rock sliders & belly pan...
My first zoo, I was all stock, except for the same size tires as you, & trooper skids...no problems.

My VX was bone stock with no skid plates for my first ZuZoo (I did have 285/60 R18 Nitto's on though) and didn't really have any problems. I've been stock height for the past couple of ZuZoo's, but I did put one of the Trooper skid plates on just to make sure. I have have hit the plate once or twice, but I tend to drive like a little old lady going to church when I'm offroading. It's all about the lines you pick and just taking it easy to make sure that you don't really bang into something.
The plates are fairly easy to come by and are even easier to put on. If you are going to make it out to Moab and don't have the time to install it yourself, bring the plate on out and we'll have a little wrench time at the Red Rock the night before the first run to get you taken care of.

I agree with both Dubster and Markster. The first time I went to Moab I was basically stock, with 245 R70/16 BFG A/Ts. I did Elephant Hill with everyone on Tuesday with no problems. I did scrape underneath probably 3 or 4 times, but no body damage or anything. True, it would have been better for me to have some sort of underbelly protection, but seriously, like Mark said, its all about picking the right lines. Having a good spotter also helps a lot. I did not go on any of the harder runs back in 2007, but in 2008 I can back ready. I think could still use some skid plates though.

Add one more to the list!!!!!!! My wife gave me the go ahead to go to MOAB this year...only one catch, she wants to go too. So we are gonna trailer the Vx, stop in dayton, OH, then KC, MO then all the way to Salt Lake City, then up to MOAB. We are gonna rough it out at Portal. I have some work to do, scour the junk yard for trooper skid plates, build my rock sliders, new rancho shocks and install my new rotors. That should just about do it. Check out the CV joints maybe, and flip the ball joints.
I can barely contain myself, actually getting a chub right now.
I figure about 1000 dollars in gas to get there and back, and another 1000 dollars for play money. Is there a fee at the park itself? Do I need to make reservations anywhere other than Portal? Do I need to sign up for the ZuZu event?
It will be me, my wife and a friend of mine originally from salt lake area. I will get there on the 10th or early 11th. See you all there!!!! I hope you guys drink beer;)

Yup! As May gets closer, we make plans to meet up with anyone that is coming our way from the East. Heading out on the Saturday before Moab, we take I80 (rather than I70) because it saves time & gas. Drop down into Denver on Sunday, do our best to hook up with as many VXers along the way, and finish the trip into Moab on Monday with as big a convoy as possible. Great fun!

Thanks guys. We have started our planning already. We are gonna leave here (Charleston) on the afternoon of the 8th, drive through to KC, MO which should be about 20 hours with the trailer. Drop off my little ones with gma and gpa, then head to salt lake area, another 18 hours or so. So we will drive into MOAB on the morning of the 11th. So we can convoy with as many others as we can.
I did hit up northern tool yesterday, scored a 5gallon jerry can with pump and mount on clearance for 40 bucks. I am stealing the spare tire converted into off road stuff idea. The full size spare will be on the roof. I also picked up a bunch of large zipties, duct tape, mighty putty (miracle stuff) , come along, 30ft tow/snatch rope, first aid kit, still gotta get a hi-lift jack. Found a guy at work that has one he is gonna sell me.
All this is my 30th birthday present, which is in July, so just a bit early:)

It's called the 'ZuZoo because all Isuzu's are welcome. I would still suggest that you bring the VX out for some wheelin' because you will NOT tear it up. The VX only run is usually pretty mild, and even on tough trails it's all in how you drive and the line you pick (or the line your spotter picks). I baby my VX and have been out to Moab three years in a row without a scratch to show for it (guess I better knock on wood). You won't regret finding out what the VX is really capable of.

If you camp at the Portal, let's stay together as a group. Today, I called to get a group site at the Portal. I got hold of a new employee who didn't know how to set up reservations. Tomorrow I should get a call confirming everything.
I'm going to reserve group tent site "C". from May 10th - May 16th for Group ZuZu. It's the best site over there. The camping is great and really lush with grass and trees. There is water on site with showers and facilities only 30 yards away. The bathrooms are always super clean and the showers are as hot as you like.
This is the part I really like. For the last four years, it was only $8 a night. Hopefully, prices haven't gone up. You will only pay for the days you stay at the Portal. Some people stay at indivdual site. I think those are $16 a night. IMO the camping is not as nice and everything else is the same except you spend twice the money.
So if you are camping, see you at the Portal in Group "C". If you are doing the motel, the Red Rock is the way to go. Either place will have a lot of VXs.

Hey guys, I just talked to Portal and they said you were actually checking out on the 17th, so that works perfect for me...I will join you at "C". The only thing is I need to park near my tent to run a cord from my Trooper battery to my tent to power my CPAP at night, so I may need to fight for a particular parking spot in the corner, and a tent spot near the parking. But I don't think it will be a problem.

yup, grand junction is only about 2 hours from moab and there will be quite a few VX's coming through there that could pick you up...

I am in at site C, they revoked my request for a site with electricity if I am tent camping, even if I agreed to pay the same cost as a camper. I just wanted an outlet to run a fan, laptop etc...Outlet is way cheaper than batteries.
See ya'll there, I hope they have Sierra Nevada out there...hmmmmm, my favorite.

During the day you will be on the trail...no need for a fan, it cools off nice for sleeping at night. The laptop can be plugged in at the ramada. A lot of us usually hang out there in the evenings with our 'puters.

It's a good idea to bring your own hooch to Moab, as there is only one municipal liquid store & their prices are a bit steep IMO.
Many times, the convoy will stop at the Liquor Barn to "provision up", before crossing into Utah.
IIRC, there are only a few "full strength" beers served in bars.

Yea, we are not gonna make this one. Its really our own fault, being apart of slavery as it was put in another thread. We could possibly scrimp and save enough but we hae so many other things to pay for.
She probly wont be there unless she has a rich boyfriend with a VX that shes not telling me about. :bgwo:

I would think you could be picked up in Denver more easily (one less connection for you to fly there, I mean). And then you'd get to see the Rocky Mountains on the way to Moab. Guess that's up to you guys.

thats true, denver is a great place to come in because its a huge airport and bigswede is right, you could see the rockies :)...
i will have some room for luggage but probably not too much room for an extra person, im sure someone else has an extra seat but not room for luggage.....i have the basket on the roof now so i will be packing all of my stuff up there, so i will have a completely open rear end of my VX

I will have someone with me that needs a ride too, he won't be picky whether its a Vx or not, just so long as he gets to go;)
I added my name to the list at site C at Portal, we will have two tents with us and two vehicles.

Something we do here pretty much every fri or sat night is have a bonfire. Would it be worth while to bring wood from missouri when I stop there during my trip. My Father-in-law has a couple hundred acres out there so it would be free, not seasoned, but for a bonfire, who cares. Is wood gonna be that expensive out in the middle of BFE? I could probably fit quite a bit on the trailer around the Vx. It would look like it was getting ready to get burned at the stake..a PUV witch so to speak. Would be a cool theme for a monster truck, put vinyl flames coming off the bottom, good photo op, anyway, would there be enough people interested at Portal? I am not a big fan of going somewhere else to drink, in my line of work, you get a DUI, your career is over (military). For some reason, I doubt a cab is cost effective in Moab;)

ya i dont think they have cabs in moab....darren do you know??
in tradition most of the drinking goes on at the red rock because those guys tend to get a better nights rest than us :) (also we start trails at 7-8am)
i dunno if the portal has a spot where a bonfire would be possible... most of it is grass and little roads...maybe bigswede can chime in on that, he's more familiar with the portal than me....
ps- im starting to get all excited for moab now...cant wait to see the fam and try out some new gear (hopefully ill have it by then)

nfntruth79,
That a good idea. The Portal has fire pits arounds. It would be nice to have a little gathering at night. Bring it if you have the space.
Peace.

That'd be a lot better than buying it at the grocery store...

Very nice, the heretic PUV getting what it deserves, apparently, dunking in the river didn't work. (very clever...)

The Portal sells firewood bundles at the shop near the entrance as well. I think last year they were around $7.00 for a modest bundle(maybe an 18" cube?). I think there were other places to buy wood in Moab as well, but don't quote me on that.

There are outlets in the pavilion, right next to the group camping area...guessing they'd frown on running a cord to your tent, but in the evenings you can run your laptop there. Others have done it...

You can pick up a power inverter real cheap nowadays. I'd send you one of mine but you could buy one for about the same price as shipping.

I have inverters in both my trucks, and a battery buddy in the expy to prevent dead batteries. I can't run a fan all night in the tent off the truck, I am trying to find a solar powered fan, that way it charges during the day and can run at night. Its the noise I want, not the airflow. I have some nice battery operated fans, but batteries are expensive. Rechargeable D batteries?
