What a great idea, one thread for each color! I like it. Should give us something to do. Thanks to rickshaw and rowhard for the idea!

PS - Sorry, I couldn't let the greenies have all the fun. I can't wait to see who starts threads for the other colors!

HAHAHA, yeah and knight rider was black, and most stealth aircraft, and most governmental armored cars are black, and pretty much anything worth riding in is black, lol ;) And don't forget lots of guns are black, and yes, black is the fastest color..... no comment on that and the track and field world, we will leave that one alone..... We all know the negative connotations with other colors "yellow belly", "white men can't jump", "white as a ghost", "silver just looks like faded black", "silver just looks like dirty white", but black is just so hardcore everyone is too afraid to mess with the color, because deep in the heart of the color black is where all the other colors are hiding for fear of their very lives. Go ahead cower in the shadow of the greatest color ever............................ wow, sorry that was random.

Funny you should say that, PB, because I was just wondering if you were going to start the Kaiser Check-in thread, and then I got to thinking, I think I know of fewer Kaisers out there than Foxfires. Right off the top of my head I can only think of yours and maybe 1 or 2 others... :_wtf:.

1- yes kaiser is one of the more uncommon.....i think mine is one of 52 if i remember right...00' kaiser with red/black on the inside

im not gonna lie...i do like the black, i think it looks pretty good, but i already have one black car and i was sick of trying to keep it clean ;) so ill give up a little unity for less maint.

Or everyone just tries to take the real king of the colors (black) off his well deserved spot at the top ;)

We even have a brand of car care treatment devoted to our color!

Black is also the second most popular color among car owners in the U.S. — behind white, and that is just because of all the businesses that order all white fleets (construction, rentals). But this is not the case with VX's. Ebony with silver/black interior is still pretty rare :)

Best,

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, at least as far as stupidly memorable quotes go. That and Princess Bride. And Pee Wee's Big Adventure. All sadly overlooked for Best Picture Oscars.

And back on topic:

I bought my Ebony VX a couple of years ago, after owning an Ironman VX for a couple of years. These threads ("Ebony rules!") are fun, but the truth is that ALL VXs look cool, and every time I see a Proton or a Firefox or a Dragon etc etc, I always love them. I like the idea of winning the lottery and collecting one of each color.

Incidentally, I DID win the lottery last week, but sadly it was just a $6.00 scratch-n-win ticket. I cannot buy any extra VXs, but I can get 3 gallons of gas! That's, like, 45 miles of free driving!!

WOOOOO-Hooo...um...hoo...um..never mind.

Actually, when I get to that point, I think I am going to keep it really simple, keeping with the 'spirit' of the Mad Max car. Some of the guys who have made replicas go for a RIDICULOUSLY exact movie car, but in my case I am going to do up the body like the movie car, but there will be a lot of little things that are not exact. Particularly in the interior of the car. I am going to install 2 new seats to my liking. My car will retain the XC dash, whereas the movie car had the XB dash with lots of little things attached for the movie, none of which mine will have in the end. As for other cosmetic details inside the car, there will be none. No head liner, no door skins, no carpet. I am going to Herculiner the floor boards and simply have the rest of the metal inside painted with the car. My long term goal will be to use the "gas tanks" in the back of the car as my audio system. One tank will house the sub box and the other will have some sort of door that contains all of the audio gear. Of course, this is all end product stuff that is just a thought in my head at this point. The whole project is gonna take several years to complete, which sucks. Right now I am working on the preliminary steps to getting the 2.8 in my Trooper swapped for a 3.4, all while trying to get my shop outfitted. As per usual, the only thing stopping me from balls-to-the-wall work on my projects is money. :(

USMC,

Don't listen to those guys.....they just have Ebony envy  (it is the fastest color) and they're trying to find something to criticize. If you like the hood insert, then by all means rock the red.

Bought an 80k mile Ebony just over 1yr ago. Got it from Navistar. We'll call this post my 1yr anniversary. (It's also my 100th post).

Kinda wanted to post here with new wheels and maybe a 1-2" lift. Haven't gotten a chance to do either yet. (I've got my eyes set on a wheel no one else has mounted up yet too.)

Thanks for all the help/feedback so far VX guys and gals!

OK, checking in again. Had to make a delivery recently so I threw the hitch back on the VX and hit the road. (The U-Haul is a 6'x12' enclosed trailer.) The wheels are of course the all too common 18"x8" Borbet CW3 with 265/60-18 Yokohama Geolander ATS's that have since been removed and stored in exchange for the summer 20" Boss wheels seen above.

Lower quality photo taken with my cell phone so not quite as shiny as before. :o

Still super shiny, even with the cel cam. What do you use on that thing? Do you apply by hand or by machine.

Just picked up a Turtle Wax "Black Box" http://www.turtlewaxblackbox.com/ this past weekend and I'll use it this weekend to get the VX ready for Moab. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Still the same process. Clearcoat polish applied with a $25 slow-speed 6" orbital buffer with a soft sponge pad, then hand-applied wax removed with microfiber polishing cloths.

I'm starting to think I just got lucky awhile back with a great 3M product. The clearcoat polish has always been the part of the process that has made the most difference.

Checking in.
Here's mine after a lot of work.

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/2/img7.jpg

Bought at 94,000 miles and have only put on 500 miles since finishing all the work.

What I have done:
Upper and lower ball joints
Tie rod ends.
Wheel seals and bearings
Removed the front differential and did Axle seals and bearings and filled with synthetic gear oil.
Dropped the transmission to change the torque converter seal and did the transmission filter and filled with synthetic transmission fluid.

Pic of the transmission taken out:
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/515/tran.jpg

Had to drop the transmission again to change the rear main seal. Stupid to not have changed it when I first had the transmission out.:madb:
Oil Pan Gasket.
Drained rear differential and filled with synthetic gear oil. Doing this got rid of the gear whine completely.
OME 913 springs and torsion bar crank.
Terra Grappler tires with KMC wheels. Loved how Rickshaw's looked.
Fixed big crack in the hood insert.
Bunch of other stuff...

Why would a dealer have a car looking so good on the outside, and not even bother to clean the inside?? Plain stupid.

Having said that, apart from the drivers seat, there didn't look to be anything that would not clean up.
Sagging door can easily be checked to see if the hinges are worn (fixable), adjustment out (fixable), or frame bent (run away).
Smells can be fixed unless there is a dead body in there.
Wheel chrome pitting is expected on the OEM wheels.

Probably do better looking at one advertised on this site, because most of us here look after the vehicles.

Have you seen the VX pre-purchase check list on here??

That's the same list I recommended in my post #122. It's quite comprehensive and you can ask those detailed questions by phone or email to a long distance seller to give you a better picture of the condition. Several of the problems you found are on the questionnaire.
Hope this helps!

The one in UT is in great shape. It belongs to forum member arcobarco. If you search the For Sale section you'll find it posted there.

We have members that do drive across the US to Moab every year with no problems.

Like any used vehicle it it's been maintained and in good shape then driving it anywhere is not a big deal.

The dealer is asking $9500. It's a 2001 with 126000 miles. Is it worth the cost? Do these perform well off road? What do you think???

Hey everyone! Here's a pic of me and my "new" ebony VX (with red/black interior):

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/me-and-my-vx-20150228-cropped.jpg

I got her last weekend from a guy on Craigslist here in the Phoenix, AZ (Scottsdale, actually) area - he purchased it a month prior from somebody up in Flagstaff, IIRC. Prior to that it was in Texas I believe. She has about 138k on the odometer, but still runs like a champ (drive-line seems pretty solid).

Right now, she's in the shop. Biggest problem is safety related: No running lights or dash lights - so I can't drive her at night. All other lights work great, though. I'm also having the shop do a complete and thorough look-over, and repair anything amiss.

The transmission fluid is an ugly brown - so that needs a definite look over (though it shifts great - no slipping or anything weird). I also need new front-end ball joints. I may also need a new timing belt (dunno when it was last checked or replaced). Maybe brakes. Maybe a bunch of things...

Anyhow - I fell in love with the VX about 6 months ago, and I thought I would never find one; every one that came up for sale was bought before I could get on it. While I was test driving this one, the seller had two other people asking about it (one was going to fly in from Florida!).

I got very lucky, I think.

I got a bunch of mods I am planning on doing - but nothing to detract from her looks, and I am going to try to keep everything reversible, or otherwise hidden. I don't want to detract from her value. I really think the VX is on the verge of being a collectible, but I didn't buy her for that reason - really, what I wanted was a daily driver with 4WD and a tight wheelbase - I was looking at Wranglers and such - then fell in love with the VX when I first saw one - she's the sexiest vehicle I've ever owned.

Yup, I recognize the rims and the lift Andrew!
I do believe that IS the Ebony that used to be up here near me (for at least a year or two). Haven't seen it around the place the guy worked, so I figured it went somewhere. IIRC his name was Colby.

Do these perform well off road?

Here is a quick Google images link to the search term... "Vehicross Moab"

WJ,

Yah but your sanity didn't last though. Didn't you end up selling off the MCS & the ORW is back to being your sole mistress?

1999 Ebony VX. High mileage and needs some work but only cost $2500 and actually runs very good. OME 912, Ranchos and Mickey Thompsons are on order. Am located in Albuquerque, NM for now.

Silverton dates have not been set yet but I will post a thread when we set the dates. We went in September last year and it was cold and snowed the last 2 days so we are thinking the end of August would be better like we did in 2015. Here is last years thread.

I know I have posted this elsewhere, but I think keeping the forum as a historical location on the internet is important.

I just purchased #0209! Sorry, still excited. No pics yet, but I plan on creating a build thread anyway.

Removing the ancient/brittle vinyl wrap. Real PITA. I am taking pictures as I go so I can post some.
