well i was going to hold off telling you lot i got a custom exhaust box fabricated on Monday as i need to get it changed  It sounds awefull!!!!! Its just a fairly small round straight through muffler and it doesnt seam to do anything, it may as well not have an exhaust, lol. Anyway they are going to change it for a larger oval box but im waiting for the part to arrive so im stuck with it at the moment.

Also the the pipe is rattling on the fuel tank skid plate and the bumper....NOT IMPRESSED !!!!

One other thing does anyone else think the VX sounds pretty bad for a V6? I like the sound of a V6 with a beafy eaxhaust but the VX sounds terrible imho ?? My 300zx sounds great, it purrs on tick over and when you floor it all hell breaks loose :D The VX is almost silent at idle and has a seriously nasty rasp under power. Or is that all down to the exhaust ??

there is some rasp.. but it can be reduced with the right muffler and or resonator

as for your muffler, if there is fiberglass fill in it, give it a month or so, the sound of my exhaust changed pretty drastically over the first month or two

do you still have a cat in yours?

Im planning to ditch mine soon and put in a straight pipe instead, Regulations over here dont require one

yes the hole things standard apart from the powerflow box that just got put in. If i didn't have to have the Cat in (although tecnically i only have to have it in once a year ;) ) i would put a centere and back box in, one to controll the noise level and one to controll the rasp... That way you could tune it to make it nice i recon!!

Oh i joined up imigration to apply for moving to New Zealand yesterday :D hate this country !!!

This engine is purely agricultural....this driveline has always been the only letdown in this vehicle for me. But it was designed for almost ag duty, so I figure it is appropriate. Plenty of twist, pretty dependable....it is those things......unrefined, thrashy, and out of breath above 4000rpm or so.....it's all those things too. More Jeep and less BMW, but that is how it's supposed to be I guess.

You will never get a true rumble sound. Like Chopper said, we have only a bit to work with.

therefore expect a mix of sports car with SUV. It is a matter of power and torque which can be modified to a degree with design but a 4 cyl is never going to sound like a truck and a truck is never going to sound like a sports car no matter what muffler.

Then I found a petrol additive at Summit Racing that makes my tailpipe smell like grape jelly, or cherries, or even pini'a colada...:_drool:

Sprey, not saying don't do it, but if it is the same as the american spec, you will have 02 sensors front and rear of cat and ECM might get confused, but I'm guessing

Ldub, you crack me up

I too have had embarassing exhaust. However it has gotten better by using the additive Gas-X, pretty much a purr at lower speeds and a howl at top end. Have noticed some loss of power and torque though.:smilewink

I'm no stranger to that top end holw, more raw vegitables & grain will help with torque loss...

Did you go to Powerflow "proper" in Milton Keynes or somewhere else? Mine's going to need some work on the 'zhaust at some point, but before then I'll need some additioal protection for the underside. Mine's standard apart from the slightly modified Trooper rear section (£12 I think - I have a spare one thanks to the unique way Millner's dispatching works...) which got re-shaped to fit by my handy local exhaust place.

Its a fair improvement over the embarrassing spud-gun that was on it before...

A

edit:- meant to add that exhausts definitely change their tone as they carbon up to don't panic too much...

Yep, i went to the propper PowerFLow, it was A1 Autocenre in NW9, north london.

As its a big company they are sorting the problem out but not impressed!! However greesemonkey had a powerflow on his vx and it sounds great (i am now getting the same oval 4x4 box as him)

CHANGED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No more loud farting noises :D

Although i kind of miss it, lol. I got an oval straight through box fitted so there is a nice bassy tone and not too much rasp.

Was thinking of romoving the Cat though

I had Magnaflow's put on my Ram & they sounded "farty" for a couple days and then "wow" did they sound nice after they seemingly had to break-in.

Just got a Flowmaster super 44 installed. Had a resonating tip put on also and it sounds unbelievable. A lot like a 350z when its really wound up.

Here is a video of mine

I recently bent my exhaust while wheeling - the PO installed an ugly split tip from like Auto Zone or something that stuck out too far. I backed it in to the ground and bent the pipe over the axle. It was banging on the frame so I had it re-done. I went with a Magnaflow and a clean rolled lip straight cut tip. It is mellow, a little throaty, and clean looking. Hopefully I wont hit ground anymore...

Good point, Still tossing up if i will get it done or not, have yet to go look for the sensors as its raining outside.

Ok I finaly decided to have a look last at the Cat last monday. And to my surprise No sensors! Just the cat it self.
So i booked it in at a local car shop that i had do exhaust work on my old celica.

Took it down this morning and got the cat taken out and replaced with a pipe.

So far. Its a tad louder. More exhaust tone that droney loudness you get with say a less baffled muffler.
Quite happy i did the mod.

Heres the Cat before it got taken out.

Sound well only driven home with it on. But i must say sounds like it has more balls lol. Im still running stock muffler. But yea pretty pleased with the result.

I guess for you, You could get a pipe that can bolt on and off like the cat.
I was gonna go for that option but was heaps more $.

Overhere we dont have any like tests like your guys Mot.

Gonna cost loads to ship the VX, lol

CAT's gonna go then in that case. Can't find the square flanges though otherwise i'd do it myself!

Sprey, did you notice a loss in low-end torque at all yet? When I switched to a Flowmaster Hushpower II I lost back pressure and ended up losing some low-end grunt. It farts a bit when cool but sounds pretty good when it is warmed up!

I did loss some of it though, specially after i added the 2nd muffler
I'm running with one pipe of 2" each side (OEM diameter)
The mufflers aren't high performance, but half the size of the OEM muffler.
The trick here is the pipe's diameter. My mufflers are very loud on the middle RPM's,they triggers any car's alarm when ever i push down on the gas pedal but it growls very good according to neighbors living three blocks away LOL.
However i'm aware this set up have to be redesigned, just isn't the time.

I've scheduled a dyno test for my horse on augst with the current exhaust configuration & figured out how much HP is the horse handling.
I think our 215 hp engine doesn't give us much of options to gain a nice exhaust growl such as the subaru impreza STI.

Can we ?
Opinions please

So far it feels the same. Ive only driven home which is 50kmh 90% of the way besides one tiny 80kmh bit so ill have to give it a decent run then report back.

The note is a product of the firing order as well as the mufflers/pipes. Some engines just sound plain nasty no matter what you try
Mine is getting played with soon - having a tray back makes it easy to experiment - NA first then later with a supercharger. Although it's likely what fits under my Frankensoozoo will not fit under a VX I'll keep yas posted.

Has anyone tried an Edelbrock SDT muffler? They make an 18" flat oval model with no fiberglass to blow out. They make a stainless steel version for about $170.
