my speedometer a few weeks ago stoped working, then a few days later it started working again, then a day later stoped and then it started working again but the speedometer was saying a much faster speed than i was actualy going ( around double what i was doing) now its not working again. could this be a speed sensor problem? if so does anyone know whrere it is located?

thnks

Sounds to me like an electrical problem rather than mechanical.

There is a picture of the ABS Speed Sensor, not sure if it is the same as the speed sensor, but this sounds a lot more complicated than a simple sensor to me, sorry.

I dont think so i went to the mechanic today and just asked him what he thinks it is and he also said it sounds like the speed sensor. Does anyone know where this is located or what it looks like? i checked the service manual and it gives a really bad pic and dont really tell where it is located

Adam, the Vehicle Speed Sensor is mentioned in a couple places in the manual. This is where it gives a good description and how to inspect it-
Engine>6VE1 3.5L Engine Driveability and Emissions>On Vehicle Service>Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

The part # is 8-97181-578-0 or 8-97181-579-0.

The bad news is it costs over $300. :(
So check and clean the electrical connection first and somehow try to make sure the VSS is the problem. Ya don't wanna spend that much and find out it wasn't the problem part. It might be worth it to go to one of the Isuzu shops in the NYC area.

There is a way your mechanic can check the VSS by just using a digital volt meter. The process is explained in the manual at DTC P0502 VSS Circuit Low Input. Are you getting any check engine light codes?

Do you know if it is compatable with any other cars like the ascender or rodeo?

Adam, lots of dealers stayed with Isuzu to do warranty and authorized Isuzu repairs and sell Isuzu parts. Go to www.isuzu.com (http://www.isuzu.com/) and enter your zip code to find the nearest Isuzu shops.

When ya have a part #, go to www.myisuzuparts.com (http://www.myisuzuparts.com/) and do a part # search to find Isuzu vehicles that share that same part. It looks like a '98-'02 Trooper has the same speed sensor as ours.

Time for the Pick n' Pull junkyard any 99-02 trooper would have this and at a junkyard prolly less $10.
