Right I know there is a search facility but I've just spent 20 minutes of my life trying to find a picture of a stock roofrack. Please someone give me a linky :bgwb:!
Also, I've seen some VX's with what looks like the Thule tray attached, low profile... can someone detail which one and how it is done?
Thanking you's

I also believe VX KAT's latest pics show a stock and beautiful roof rack. Also some beautiful new skins.

Sorry, but I'm being a newbie here... VX KAT seems to just have bars... is that the stock rack or is there an actual basket thingy too? i.e. what makes up the whole roofrack and what are the thingamybobs that are on ebay at the moment?
Thanks
Nick

The bars are the stock portion, the baskets are all aftermarket.

the stock part is just the little towers that hold the bars to the roof and the actual bars themselves....everything else is aftermarket

This will show you the parts involved in an OEM rack assembly.

Blimey so when you see 'stock roofracks' selling for $300 or more, it's just the bars??? Wow!

Yup! They're so rare they are worth their weight in gold! New or used! Actually it's the 4 towers and the 2 cross members and the various hardware to bolt them on that make up the OEM roof rack. I got mine from a forum member parting out a wrecked VX.
I think the other things you were talking about are the Yakima Mighty Mounts. They're the oval shaped things that fit on the cross members that attach other accessories like a bike or ski rack. They did NOT come with the OEM rack and they're not available now, so, again, there's a pretty good demand for those when they come up on ebay or here.

I believe that you will find the "low profile" Thule basket you are thinking of, belongs to Zeus. Check his gallery for pics, I think there is also a "how to", in that section of the site...

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but, has anyone seen the new Yakima Railgrab towers? They look like just the ticket so I can finally mount a cargo carrier. Seems like they might be an improvement on the Lowriders since they are designed to attach to flush mounted rails.

they look pretty awesome  i have the lowriders and they work, but i have to be really careful during install or they will rest on the roof

Did the Yakima railgrab towers work?. I went to a rack store and was told the only system that would work was plug installs in the roof inside the existing side rails.

I haven't personally tried them, I happened to come across them on the internet while researching rack possibilities. When I scrape up the $ they will be the first things I try.

I'm lookin for a new safari roof rack system for the VX and I'm lookin for some input from all of you. First, what size would fit well on the VX and look best? secondly, what brand is good/bad/easy/difficult?. . . Wilderness, Kargo master, Surco safari, etc.
I'm looking to mount lights, spare tire, ax/shovel, high lift jack, gas/water cans, snow board, mountain bikes, etc. so I'd absolutely LOVE if you guys could post pics and descriptions of your racks(for your VX roof, lol).
Thanks in advance for your time and help. I know I'm a Noob, but you guys have been so helpful to me already.

superstang-
ive got a black widow roof rack. with 2 snowboard racks, lights and a *new hi-lift*
works great, its strong, its low profile so it doesnt create a lot of wind resistance...and is similar enough to thule and yakima racks that parts are readily available...and i paid about $150 for it ;)
ill post pictures tonight (work computer wont let me), or feel free to look through my gallery

I've been looking at roof racks in depth just this week...surfing the many galleries here...takes some time to do the searching, but there's tons of pics! Most are either the Thule Xpedition 696 (large) or 695 (small), or the Yakima Load Warrier
Check out the galleries of these VXrs...this should keep you busy a while::yeso:

Roof rack??? Not for me. Roof racks cause too much air-drag which results in poor MPG. A better solution is to remove the worthless backseat, and stow all of your gear inside the cargo area. Sleek and smooth makes the VX a happy VX, instead of a wind-catcher with a roof rack.

you gonna store 4 snowboards, a full size spare, a hi-lift, and 3 friends in your VX with no back seat?? ;)

I got my racks from this guy in MN which i'm not quit sure was even a member,he contacted me first so i believe he was just a lurker, then got another set from IDGAF27 in NJ, gues i was lucky to own two sets of racks, thereafter sold one of the sets to MDwyer.
I add some roof lights which i use in the city, but once i hit on the highway i get them off.
I've never been a roof basket fan, however for 4wheeling is a must to carry one.

But to REALLY get that mileage up there, you need some lightweight, low unsprung weight, 2 ply bicycle tires...

etlsport,
Thank you so much for that side shot of your rack...wow that sounds perverted, lol.
If yours is 39x44 I think the 40x50 I'm lookin at would be perfect for me as it would go from the rear wing to the back edge of the door or so, plus I will be adding lights as well. That is exactly what I needed to see. thank you again for the visual aid

I've seen a lot of ragging on him for the huge heavy spare tire mounted on the tailgate. It just might be a scientific reason for it like to offest the huge heavy spare tire hes carrying in the front.
Not sure if he even has a spare tire but couldnt pass on the joke.

I thinkk the load warrior is the perfect width for the VX, but a little to short on the roof. I got the extension for mine and it takes up a little more room on the roof, I think it balances it nicely. there is a nice side shot in my gallery if you wanta look, lord knows I never figured out how to post pics successfully.

For those in need of a roof rack, a subaru forester thule works nicely with some modifacation. Would post pics but after a year of trying I have yet been able to post a single pic due to (exceeds your limit of daily uploads) even when I try to post just one? what ever, good luck.

Hmmm.....New Member......3 posts.....
doesnt really fit with the "after a year of trying" statement.
Perhaps $20 for a year to join will fix your problem. I know the $20 I paid has fixed MANY of my problems.

"Not sure if he even has a spare tire but couldnt pass on the joke."
Rest assured. I travel fully equipped. The full size spare on the tailgate is indeed offset by a Dunlop up front (my belly dun lopped over my belt). I suppose that my wide stance is also offset by my narrow mindedness (I'm right & all y'all are wrong).
I fit in real good in this here family.:)

Has nothing to do with support status. I answered your complaint in the "Site Questions and Problems" thread (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showpost.php?p=168711&postcount=5). If you'll work with me, I'll get you all fixed up.
