View Full Version : Tranny blues?

Well...it's my turn in the tranny bucket. The car has been sitting alot the last few months. I got in it today, and as I pulled from the driveway, the trans seemed to slip for a second, then bang into second. I read this on here before, and instinctively looked at the position light on the dash. It looked like I was toggling back and forth, from drive to neutral and back, really fast. I'm sure that a low fluid level won't do that...but I'll check and eliminate that. I am thinking it is the Mode Position Switch(?) Sensor(?) It cleared right up. I drove about 60 miles, and made three stops.....it never happened again. This gearbox has always shifted smoothly and without drama (except @ W.O.T.) both up, and down. I guess I'll be calling Merlin. I can't afford for the vehicle to be down for any length of time, so I'll buy one, and shelve it till the old one goes Kaput. Do these things usually go a bit at a time? Or do you just, one day, have a car that won't shift? I really appreciate it giving me this heads up....money flow is precarious at best, right now. Time to raise funding is awesome! Does anyone have a different take on this situation? I can't think of what else would cause these symptoms.... Suggestions??

Do you have a remote starter?

Nope. All stock 40,000 mi. It's never been driven on the beach, or dirt, or even rain. It only gets wet when it gets washed...I believe you are right Anita

Yeah, if you dont have a remote starter, then I would agree that it sounds like the mode selector switch.

From the description in the thread I posted above, it sounds like the switch is mounted external to the Tranny. I don't know if you'll lose tranny fluid during the swap but it 'should' be mounted high enough that you won't.\
I'm prolly talkin out my arse since I've not done the swap. maybe you should PM mdwyer.

Yikes No! ... I remember when mine went out that it was an easy fix. In fact I believe I waited for it to be done.

i was just under the vx today.. if its the part im thinking of, the mode selector switch is on the drivers side mounted to the side of the tranny, i think its got some sort of heat shield thats kind of form fitted over it
This might prove to be useful...:_wrench:

had the same problem last summer. i just went to the junk yard and yanked one off of a 99 rodeo for $25. took me about 30 mins to swap out. runs smooth like butter on a muffin.
