Custom Brake Caliper Paint

Here's pic of my custom brake caliper paint job.. I had G2 mix up a special batch of "Proton Yellow". The kits are complete with everything you need but I'd go for at least 1 or 2 more cans of their Brakekleen.. I used some that my wife stocks and it come nowhere close to G2's. The only tip I have is, work fast!! The paint sets quite fast.

Here's a pic of my custom brake caliper paint job. Went down to the Home Depot and picked up a small can of Rust-o-leum, gloss red, and a can of acetone. Be sure you clean the calipers real good, before applying the paint.

The paint has held up quite well for the last 10 months.

Total cost ~ $5.00!

Moncha, the job looks great. I just have a few questions.

1. did you actually get a custom color or their pre-mixed yellow? if so, who mixed it?
2. what brand of jack stands do you have and what's their rating? (ie: 6, 4, 2 ton etc.)
3. where are the best places to mount the stands for this mod?
4. any idea what the paint color code is for dragon green?

So all that's required for this mod is a can of paint and some Brakekleen? That's awesome... Now I just have to choose a color. ;Db;

How difficult is it to remove the calipers? Will I have to bleed the brakes or anything after I replace them?

The jack stands I have are 4 ton, you need to put them at the front cross member (The one inline with the leading edge of the doors) in the cups that are at the outer ends. (That ought to confuse you) Look in your manual under the jacking section for more details. Since you need all 4 wheels up at the same time, I put 2 more stands under the rear axle.

You can find your paint code onthe plate that is mounted at the driverside firewall in the engine compartment.

With the Dragon Green though, personally, I'd paint my calipers red. I had the company that makes the paint mix the color for me. They are only 40 miles away and since it's a special 2 part epoxy paint, i didn't want to screw with their formula.

It was expensive, $110 for the custom kit but, I'm very happy with it. I've used high temp paint before but it seems to loose it's luster after a while. The epoxy looks the same as it did when first put it on.
Tip: I used high temp black paint, masked off the outer edge of the rotors and the hubs to get rid of the rust and crappy silver. Made a big difference!

I was looking at becoming a dealer for them but, there wasn't much response from the group so I never did.

Kpaske, The calipers are very easy to remove and unless you move the caliper pistons, you won't have to do anything to get them back on. Just remember, it's a special can of paint.

So for the poor man like me (just spent all my spare change on my audio system ;Db; ), you wouldn't recommend using just any old paint? That G2 stuff sounds awfully 'spensive. What about primer? OH, and what about the rear? Did you do the drums too or just the calipers?

I just bought a G2 kit for $38 from Eastwood's (http://www.eastwoodco.com) and plan on painting this weekend. Comes with everything you need in the kit. Not a custom color, but their gloss red for the Dragon.

I've used other types of Hi-Temp paint and was never happy in the long run. Brake calipers generally run as high as several hundred degrees under certain conditions the G2 is expensive, yes, as a custom color but, it's never coming back off.
No primer and I painted the E-Brake drums black.

Thanks for the help Moncha, I was planning on the red for the caliper's the whole time I just figured you might know the color code since you posted the proton one on your site. I got both the caliper and engine kits from

$38.00 and $48.00 respectivly, I dont mind the cost as long as it looks good and lasts like you said. I did notice that compared to z4two caliper job, yours is really glossy, which is what I want. I'll probably do mine next weekend.

You could also try getting the surface as smooth as possible if you want a glossy finish.

Painting results are all about the prep-work.
