I took my VX on its first real test this weekend when a group of us from the Four Wheel Drive Club took our 4x4's up to the Lake District and drove some fantastic lanes. The main one was the Gatescarth Pass. This Pass is open to 4x4's by permit only and there are just 12 permits issued every month - we had them all for November! It was a fantastic, challenging drive with lots of tight chicanes, loose dirt and steep drop-offs making it pretty scarey! Unfortunately the weather at the top was pretty bad, which mad it quite eerie. We then spent the rest of the weekend doing some other lanes in the area. As can be seen in one of the pics, I had a bit of a mis-hap when I slid sideways into a gully and ended up wedged against a large rock. Took eight of us over an hour to free me. Thanks to the 'damage limiting cladding' there is only a small split and a few scratches.

Nick ;)

Nick, hello for Alabama USA

Saw your post and really like your pictures, wish I had some country like that around here. Hated to see the damage (rock) but if you use sometimes it happens.

I just think it's cool to see non-Jeep caravans of 4x4s.

It was funny, the other day the wifey and I were eating at Qdoba. And I chit you not, there were 6 Jeep Wranglers in the parking lot with my VX. SIX! It was awesome too, because I watched one of the Jeep owners come out of a store and he was like walking circles around the VX and scratching his head. Awesome.

Anyway, I just like to see the other stuff. But we've had this discussion to many times. :)

I wonder what the guys think on the other side of the pond. Do you guys hate to see Land Rovers everywhere or is there something else that people love to hate for their abundance?

Yes indeedy - a CB aerial.

The hankooks were surprisingly grippy - Its actually not as steep as it looks :bwgy:

I have them on my Pajero too, so rate them very highly. The run well on the road with very little/no noise and good road holding. Off road they are superb in all conditions. :yesgray:

Yes, Land Rovers are everywhere and there is a tongue in cheek war between Landie owners and everyone else. The Land Rovers are well known for breaking down a lot, but because parts are everywhere, they are very cheap to fix. Personally, having owned one, I think they are badly made, overpriced and not very good at anything, but thats just me :bwgy:

We have plenty of Cherokees and Wranglers, but not many are used off-road.

Cheers

Nick ;)

Nick ;)Funny that we mostly share your view of the Landies over here as well. At least, most seem to understand the Landies are poorly made, overpriced, and not all that great. Parts are expensive though and needed often so it makes sense we don't see them around much. Depending in what circle you are in, Jeeps have a poor record regarding quality, but my experience has been great with them and parts are cheap and plentiful anyway.

Hmmm, that does sound just like Jeep! Yeah, the Rovers are just Richie Rich's choice for a 4x4 I think. I personally really like the way the D90 looks, but the same can be accomplished with an Isuzu and A LOT less money.

Nice one, kid. When it comes right down to it, imo the ONLY advantage Jeeps have over most other similar sized SUVs and light trucks is a stock solid front axle. Other than that, they are cookie cutter.

Sounds like a complete role reversal on different sides of the pond. Here LR's are seen almost as pseudo-luxury, and hence rarely seen off-road. Cherokees and Jeeps on the other hand? I see one covered with mud and/or with a fender dent almost every day.

Hmm here id say since we get lots of imports of both. tho its more common to see something like a mitsi pajero or a hilux or a landcruiser etc. than a landy or a jeep

i guess it really depends on what prices the vehicles are where you live and how are there are there.

aka land rovers = english expect to be lots
jeep = usa, expect to be lots.

lol ^ staes the ovious :D

Very square, VERY expensive, very capable. A lot get used by military for troop carriers, TOW launchers, etc.
The civilian version unfortunately usually becomes a soccer mom/grocery getter vehicle. Many though get used as expedition vehicles though.
Not really hideous (I kinda like them)...think 1st generation Trooper.
