View Full Version : Everyone should do this......seriously....

I made a few comments in THIS (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?threadid=16768) thread. However, I felt it necessary to make a new thread to encourage everyone to do some VERY quick investigations.

After hearing several noises over the almost year that I have owned my VX, I have corrected or come to live with all of them. In my book, as long as I know what is causing the noise, and it isn't harmful, I can ignore it (ex: seat squeak). After reading through several threads about a clunk that sounded strangely familiar, I finally decided to heed the warning. I looked at my transmission mount and sure enough, I was missing a bolt connecting the mount to the transfer case. Just to make sure that I had ALL my bases covered, I replaced the transmission mount and all bolts associated. I was very delighted to find out that this corrected my clunk as well as the squeak that I thought was shock related.

Good call. Sounds like its worth checking and I actually have an occasional clunk

Great idea, especially for us non-"motorheads". I believe even I would recognize a missing bolt. I think I'll try to get under mine this weekend and have a look-see. Plus if one is missing, I'm good with duct tape, actually I've become a fan of Gorilla Tape. I always thought the little clunk I hear was one of the marbles rolling around in my head, but who knows it may be a loose or missing tranny mount bolt.

I had associated the clunk to sway bar bushings or shocks or something else.

Totally shocked that SOOO much was corrected by that one bolt.

I believe even I would recognize a missing bolt. I don't know, are ya sure?? :_wtf: I always thought the little clunk I hear was one of the marbles rolling around in my head, .....I still think that's what it is, but then you and I are about equally skilled in things motorhead related.....:laugho::laugho:.

Actually, went through my "VX folder" over the weekend with print outs of any post I keep for reference for my mechanic, and the tranny bolt thing was one of them I flagged to have my mech check out, since I live on my famous horrible dirt/rocky road. I'm certainly a candidate for loose bolts in these conditions. Thanks JAMAS for bringing it up! Underscores how important it is!

Hmmm; for those getting the "belly pan" KILBY skidplates, it would be a damn good idea to check those bolts BEFORE installation because the KILBY will cover-up everything with a solid sheet of steel.

After fixing the issue have you had any reoccurance of it

Nope. I fixed it on Saturday and I have been taking corners like I was driving NASCAR. No problems. There are 2 turns that I have ALWAYS heard a clunk on, on my way home every day. Since getting it fixed, no clunk. I even re-adjusted my Ranchos to be a bit softer. I had them set at their highest setting because that prevented alot of the clunk. So now I am quiet and comfy. Love it Love it.

ALL bolts that were removed, were replaced with Loc-Tite applied. Hopefully I wont have this issue any more.

I had a look at mine all seems tight. Tho i didnt physicaly put a socket up to the bolt and check just pushed on the bolts and the mount.

Do i have to take off the skid plate and actualy put up a socket to test the tightness?

Ill grab some pics of the mount if wanted to give people a better idea of the bolts etc

As long as you can see that there are two bolts in place (one on either side), then you should be good. Unless the mount itself is coming apart (Ldub's issue).

There are some pretty good pictures in the first post of the first link that I listed, but I am sure folks wouldn't argue with more.

More would be appreciated, one from a zoomed out position so you can see exactly where folks are talking about.

I had found my trans mount bolts to be loose as well while looking around underneath. I found it before the bolts fell off. Once I found it could happen I expected it to happen again. Never did tho.

I have heard that you can fix this by cutting your bump stops in half or just removing them completely!:bwgy::bgwb::bgwo::smilewink

I bet so too, after all the bump stops nearly jarred the teeth out of my head. I have to think the rough ride would have the same effect over time on bolts. But wait, shouldn't those things be kept in place by red loctite or something?

I have never heard of anyone loctiting their teeth?:?:
I think they make something called polident for that:yes:
