So, last week the wife and I went down to Johnson Valley for the first "Road War Weekend Event". This was a 3 day event of Mad Max fandom. All in all, I had a decent time, but the turnout was a lot less than what I expected. I would have been happy just going for the main day, Saturday.
However, regardless of all that, the entire event was made worth while as I got a ride in Paul Miller's complete Mad Max 1 Pursuit Special. To see his car was good enough for me, but to take it out on the playa and feel her open up was amazing. My rust heap of a Falcon is only a shadow of this right now, but believe me, the thought that one day it will be this cool gets me all pumped up.
A few pics.
The car.

That must have been a thrill. I bet it gave you hope for the future. Well, the future of your Falcon project at least.

You're right, and so is PB. That encampment belonged to the owners of the Hellcamino, and you know Rednecks can't spell! There are no English classes in the wasteland either.

Yeah, it looked like a lot of fun. They were hammering up the hills with it and it was cool to watch. I'll tell you what though, THIS looks like the most fun $5000 can buy:

Bart$5 grand for that!? It looks like something we could build in a weekend in your garage with $1000 in parts! Shall we? ;)

Yeah, I think they could be built pretty cheaply, however I talked with the guy for a while and he said all the parts are aircraft quality so I bet that gets pricey. Either way, I would love to have one to cruise over the open Nevada landscape...or better yet, MOAB!

Does he actually run this thing with no air filter?
Or is it a dummy blower with an air filter inside?
Inquiring :_wrench: wanna know...:_thinking

You were in the dry lake bed, the Hammers trails were in the hills right there. That video is from a race they have there every year (2010 will be #4) called King of the Hammers. It combines rock crawling (the Hammers Trails) and desert racing (on the lake bed and surroundings) in one race. It is growing fast and now has qualifier races (going to the one in Tucson in 2 weeks). A ton of fun to watch...I hope to make it out there for the race sometime.
I have the King of the Hammers videos (The first and second crusades) on my Christmas wish list (view the teaser here (http://www.kingofthehammers.com/)):bwgy:
PB...your just to young to remember zoomie exhaust. They were pretty popular back in the day!:yesy:

I'm 90% sure it is a dummy setup. The wheel turns but does nothing.

Yeah, pretty insane watching them bash into each other and push each other around. Some of those guys helping to push the trucks back over are NUTS. One of the dudes looks like he escaped getting crushed buy inches...
How do those rigs control the rear end steering? Do they have like a stick or something or a second wheel??? :wtfy:

$1000? Hell, an old lawnmower and some scrap metal (an old swingset will do) and a bit of welding.:bwgy:

Watching is kind of like watching Ralley racing in Europe...no fences, just stay out of the way. When I go to the qualifier I am volunteering, so will be right on the courses either as a judge or to help with recovery:naughty:
Rear steer is usually set up with a joystick, it usually has a return to center, and uses a hydrolic ram to steer the axle.

Hey...iffin' ya gonna go full on NECK, ya gotta use good ol' fashiond 100% Mer-I-kin growd WOOD!

Yeah, the movie car was all a mock up as well. So technically, a "movie correct" car does not have a working blower anyhow!
I did read somewhere once that a working unit would produce something like 600HP! That would be insane, but I think the car would have to be beefed up a little to handle that kinda torque. After all, the Falcons are uni-body (:_brickwal) so...
