View Full Version : window/lock button illumination?

Hi folks,

I seem to remember the window/lock buttons on the door handle(s) illuminating. Do these switches illuminate when the lights are on? If so what color? I thought they where green?

I took the whole pod out of the handle and apart. I see no bulb(s) to replace or even a place to put them.

Am I missing something?

:_wtf:

Thanks

I'll check in about an hour when I get my first break.

UPDATE: Mine has only a very dim glow on the drivers side window switch where it says "auto"

Thanks for checking ldub. Did you get a chance to look at em? Anyone else have any insight on the bulbs for the window/lock illumination?

Back in 2002. I never noticed any lumination. That is not to say there isnt any because I had no idea that the seats have the pull out extension until it was mentioned here.

Mine too. Granted I bought it used so a bulb could be out, but if you look carefully at the switches I don't see anything semi-transparent on them that would allow light through.

I could have sworn they used to illuminate. Ldub says his is dim? hmmm

Anyone else.

Did some digging and found a photo in the users gallery. Looks like Knigh7s replaced his:

question is....HOW?

I obviously overlooked something when I took the pod apart but I examined it pretty good. Knigh7s, how did you do this?

Thanks :)

I checked mine and the following illuminate:
"AUTO" in the driver's window switch
Rear window defogger (and an orange light comes on when engaged)
Mirror defogger (and an orange light comes on when engaged)
"WINTER" button in center console for transmission

I assume the "POWER" button does as well but my bulb must be burned out in the switch.

So it's official, the window and lock switches do illuminate. Now I just need to figure out how Knigh7s swapped his out

In his picture decription, Knigh7 said he swapped one surface-mount diode with another. If that's the case, it might be a small electronic circuit board that you are looking for rather than a bulb.

please tell us what it took to fix it when you figure it out

Hey, I just looked at the 99 Vx that I just picked up with 20,000mi on it and the window switch drivers side does illuminate with the lights on. This truck is about as close to a new one as you can get

Wow, I don't know how I missed this thread. Sorry for the 3 year late response!!!

Anyways, I was in the process of revisiting this project and searched around the forums to see if anyone else has done anything like this yet. So here I am. :bgwo: Better late than never, yeah?!?

So on the circuit board there is only one surface mount diode (SMD) that is labeled LED1. The only button that would be illuminated would be the AUTO window button. Also it is so dim because it is being covered by the silicone/rubber piece that you can see in pic 2 & 3 where I had trimmed it back.

The window LOCK and door Lock buttons has no light source. If you look at the last picture, I had to cut a hole behind the door lock just to get light through it (only to find out later that there wasn't even a light source).

Images are hosted at my blog.

I'm working on adding in three 3mm white or orange LED's (not sure if I want to go all white or all orange yet) between the circuit board and switches. They have to be perfectly aligned with the holes to get even/proper light without making them look faded or inconsistent with each other.

I'll update with more pictures as I finalize the project and put together a how-to.

Ditto. Both of our '99's the Auto button lights up, albeit dimly. (You learn something new every day. What wonderful trucks these are.)

@44ficus44, you definitely have to solder them. I had to use a needle point tip to get it off and the new one on. But looking back, I don't think its worth the time/effort, even with the blue LED it still isn't really that bright. So I'm going to wire up three 3mm LED that will point directly up the switches.
