1999 IronMan Steering wheel vibration

Hi all,

I know I need two front tires, but I have a bit of sloop in my steering wheel. If I move it either way left or right there is a little open space. I can feel this when the car is parked and the engine is off.

What it feels like is there is a plate or something that has a slote hole in it where the screw has become loose. Does anyone have any idea which end of the column this might be on. Although it does seem to be near the top.

There is an adjustment you can do that will fix this.
In the engine compartment, front, near the air cleaner housing, but lower...
there is a box that has a screw with a locknut. Just loosen the nut and turn the screw clockwise until it JUST TOUCHES. Then tighten the lock nut again. Drive it for a while and see if you need to LOOSEN it at all. (I had to on mine. Every bump went through the steering wheel. Just backed it off a HAIR).
This process takes about 5 minutes (depending on how difficult it is to loosen the lock nut).

Crossrider, not sure from your description what the problem is.
Silverbullet is correct if the play is when "turning" the steering wheel to steer left or right.

But if your problem is when you pull and push the wheel sideways without turning it, you need to check the steering wheel tilt mechanism. There is a lever on the side of the column that releases the clamp and allows you to tilt the wheel to the desired driving position.
Then you tighten the lever again.

If this is undone, or not adjusted correctly, the wheel will wriggle sideways a bit.

I think that between Silverbullet and myself, we have covered most possibilities depending on the type of problem you have.

I have loose steering, IE the steering wheel is loose and I can turn it left and right a bit before the wheels actually turn. Does this tighten the steering up? Or do I have a worse problem? It also pulls to the left when braking hard.

another component to keep in mind is the center link... it get worn out just like a typical ball joint does.

Crawl underneath and see if you can manually rotate that link by hand.

I replaced mine, then did a 1/4 turn on the steering box, and all is good!
