My check engine light came on as I was driving to work. I'm going to take it to Pep Boys after work to see if they can tell me the code number. In the mean time, Does anyone have aguess at what they think it may be? BTW my VX has 111,000 miles on it.
Peace.

Had CEL being a pain a little while ago.
If PepBoys tells you that it is a P0440 start by asking them to reset it and then crank your gas cap on and see if it comes back.
Upon inspection I noticed that my gas cap was missing one of the white tabs on the inside. I ordered a new one from Merlin and have only had the light come on once in the last 4 months and after getting some gas and cap cranking it went out without a code reset.

The only CEL I've ever gotten in the VX was from a dirty MAF sensor.

Tom, I'm gonna roll the dice and offer a real suggesstion.
I say it's your EGR!
What do I win if I get it right?

Tom I agree with Bart. I get p1404 code alot and just reset it.
Scangauge II is your friend and easier alot of my worries. Going on 140k myself. If you havent cleaned your EGR then I am guessing its that.

I'm betting on an O2 sensor. And not necessarily a bad sensor, just a bad connection. They will try to sell you the sensor though...
I may have experienced this once or twice. :)

If it is EGR, you could clean it or spend the $100 or so on a new one. I always opt for new. And this is very easy to do in your garage. Take off old, put on new, clear codes, drive away!!
I say EGR because when mine did this, I did not have any symptoms (no rough driving, etc). An O2 sensor could be it too, but usually if it is a bad O2 sensor you will get some symptoms.
Just my .02.

Until you get the code read it is just aguessing crapshoot. There are litterally thousands of things it could be. However 90% of the time a steady CEL comes on it is emissions related...sensors, MAF, EGR, etc..........

I say your muffler bearing went out. I had this happen to me not too long ago, fairly easy to replace, or it could just need greased.

Now I don't know if you have done it, but switching over to synthetic blinker fluid might be a good idea too, that has made my light come on before

Tom if I am not mistaken any autoparts store should have a reader.

I don't know about Texas, but California won't let the autoparts stores do free code reading anymore, it's stupid. If you were closer I have a laptop program with hookups I could check it for you. Let us know what you find!

I went by Coppell Tire and Service, and they did it for me. The code that came up was P1441 evap system blow during non-surge. Anyhow, it has to do with some emission coming from the tank. It might be a loose the gas cap.
Anyhow, they reset the Check Engine light. I then had a great idea. I'll go get my inspection sticker while the light is not on. Turns out when you reset the engine light the emission check comes back as Not Ready. Apparently, it takes a couple of days to read the engine and the emissions. It didn't pass.
I have to go back on Friday to see if its calculating everything and then see if it passes. I have a feeling it will.
Peace.

In Az. they can read them but can't reset the code unless you buy the parts to fix it.

The check engine light never came back on. I took the VX back to the inspection place. There was no problem with emissions, and the inspection pasted easily. :yesy:
Peace.
