I decided to make a new thread to document modifications on my VX since i have like 3 different threads now. Rims and tires are done. I am in the process of converting it to a 5 speed manual with TOD and the turbo kit project will be covered here too. Future plans include custom turbo pistons and rods, ECU upgrade etc. I will also document my cylinder head repair here.

Have you contacted Dynomotive or HPHeaven? They are business over in Australia that know these motors inside and out and have custom pistons, rods, cranks, camshafts, you name it. I've been talking with Mark from Dynomotive for a little while. Flatlander Racing can make a custom set of pistons and rings in Forged for about $750-$800 here in the US and for about $1200 will make a set of billet rods. I've been thinking about doing this engine in a small light car for sometime and turbocharging the wee out of it. You could also look into changing over to a Megasquirt ECU to control the fuel/timing, would be alot simpler/cheaper than upgrading the factory one. They sell something overseas for it but it is $$$$. Good luck with everything and look forward to seeing lots of pics! Here is a quote from Mark:
"Hi Dallas,
I have not seen a s.o.h.c 6vd1 however, I have a lot of experience with the dohc version (would be the same bottom end) I have one here at the moment running 1680hp, the stock rods fail at around 600hp and the stock pistons fail at around 450hp. I can’t comment on the flow of the heads, because I haven’t seen s.o.h.c. but for the twin cam we run larger valves and custom porting, 80mm throttle body and big cams. Even on the mild engine with a gt3582r turbo (700hp capacity) we see around 520 rwhp"

Thanks Dallas, yeah I will soon be considering their products.

What about building one N/A ...all motor.....11.5:1 pistons, Huge cams and titanium valves and springs....and a 9000 RPM redline?????
I think that would be alot of fun!!!

Would be, but think it would be pointless in an offroad rig. Now turbocharging wouldn't be a whole lot better but you could get boost in sooner. Now take that NA motor and drop it say, an Triumph or something, look out! That would be fun

I disagree,....
after installing my manual 5 speed, I realized how much low end torque these engines actually have...feels more like a v-8 than a v-6....
And by going to 11.5:1 pistons, you would gain almost 20% MORE torque!!!
True, Aggressive:yesy: cams would lessen the low-RPM resposiveness somewhat, BUT this would be minor due to the Varible Valve Timing (not real VVT...but almost) that is to say the intake manifold has longer tracks at below 3600 RPMs...
Wild cams do not have nearly the same low-end torque losses when used with varible length intake...
Look at the other engines designs with Varible length intake manifolds...huge toruqe gains down low with High HP at upper RPMs...;)
Agreed, A turboed engine would be the worst for off road, (used with an auto tranny would be OK...with a manual it would suck!) as the low compression pistons are inefficiant below 2000 RPMs W/o boost, and most turbo systems dont make any real boost untill 1800 Rpms

Going 11.5:1 yes would help bottom end but for cams in the 9000rpm range you will be losing ALOT of off-idle torque. I think even with the "vvt" you would lose enough that crawling rocks would be somewhat irritating. Now for tromping through the trails and mud holes, sure. Off-idle crawling though it wouldn't be practical IMO. That and depending on how radical you go on the cams, streetability will suffer ALOT more than a booster application. And when are you gonna get pics up of your 5-spd swap!! We all wanna see!!!

I'm a turbo junkie so I'll stick with a turbo application. :) (I have 1 supercharged car thou)
I'm not planning on crazy hp numbers just maybe around 400hp to the wheels on a stock engine or mildly modified. I was happy to learn that our engines have 6 bolt mains. The cylinder head I have sitting in the garage will be mildly ported and polished.

cool deal, good luck! I'm a boost junkie myself, but I've had fun on the bottle too lol

Got the 5 speed trans.
All I'm missing now is a clutch set. Would the 3.2 flywheel/clutch kit fit?
RamAirZ
05/30/2010, 12:57 PM
Ya if you get the 3.2 flywheel and clutch, the 3.5 uses a slightly larger clutch disc/plate but as long as you get matching flywheels/clutches it'll work either way (3.2 stuff or 3.5 stuff)

What tranny did you go with?
I highly suggest NOT buying an aftermarket clutch!!!!! and If you havent already bought a flywheel, why not go with the trooper one (3.5) as it has a larger disk and preasure plate and greater spring preasure as well?:yesgray:

Yup, and you can get OEM clutches through Jerry or Merlin, Centerforce makes one that works well I believe still

Dude, when you get the 5spd swap done we need to get up with each other I would like a ride. :) Hell, I know how to turn a wrench if you need a hand.

Sure! I got everything ready except for flywheel and clutch.

Me too... speaking of, we should have some sort of Hampton Roads meet one of these Saturdays. There are certainly enough of us running around (at least 6-7 of us now).
