View Full Version : Lifter Noise

Took my VX to the dealer for the 15,000 mile service and asked them to check a lifter noise I'm having. In the morning, there is lifter noise for about 45 seconds until the oil gets up there. They told me the VX has solid lifters and this noise is normal. Is this true or just BS from the dealer? Also - most of you probably already know this, but being a noobee, I didn't - the VX has a different 15K mile service schedule than other Isuzu's. Since my dealership sees so few, they weren't aware of this. The part they didn't do was to change the front & rear differential fluid and lub the rear drive shaft. Had to show them the maintenance section of the manual to get them to do it. Just an FYI

Some lifter noise is normal. There has to be some space between the valve stem and the lifter to allow for expansion. That is the reason it goes away after you start it.
Synthetics help minimize the time for that noise to go away and offer additional protection for small engines.

Tone - I run Mobil 1 in it (as did the previous owner). My concern is when I go to sell this baby, it sounds like a diesel when I start it!

I dom't know what weight Mobil1 you're using but, IIRC, there was a post somewhere about a TSB suggesting using Mobil1 0W30 to quiet lifters in Isuzu's 3.2L. Our 3.5 is a stroked 3.2 right? Would the same suggestion apply?
I’ve noticed a huge reduction in lifter noise at startup with Castrol Syntec 10W-30 or Royal Purple in my VX and my buddies MR2. Mobil1 is good but I think there are better ones out there.

why does mobil 1 make it sound like a diesel????

I've run nothing but Mobil 1 TriSynthetic in my VX and my '88 Fiero
and I don't have any lifter noises at startup. My Fiero has 180k miles on it and it runs quiet and like new.
