Good thing you don't have an HOA, they would cite you for having cars on rocks in your driveway...get it, instead of cars on blocks, I cleverly changed that to rocks, it rhymes...

Give me a break, I am on duty, not in Moab:(

I guess I will be the first to give an update...
I am sitting in my tent at the Portal as I type this...exhausted. Was up at 3am and on the road by 4. 10 hours later arrived at the Portal. A few tents were set up but nobody was home. I set up my camp and Kodiac rolled in. We caught up for a few moments then rolled into town to the "Stoop". Caught up with the old crew and was happy to meet a few new ones as everyone started to roll in. Dub kept everyone entertained, some last minute wrenching took place and everyone enjoyed ice cream and beverages:bwgy:
Tomorrow morning we are off to the "Top of the World".:dan_ban:

I know the Red Rock Inn. Is that Meetup Central? I pitched a tent (no, really...an actual tent, not a euphemism) at Portal, then had an iced coffee at Mickey D's, and now I'm totally out of ideas. Actually I'm having a beer(s) at Eddie McStiffs on Main Street. Anybody reading this, come to the bar...

After top of the world some of us went down rose garden hill. It made for a VERY long day. We left Portal around 9am and didnt get back to town till after 10:30pm.

Ever drive around in the desert at night on a trail you've never been on before? Spooky.

Pics, vids and stories will be coming at some point. For some reason my laptop wont work in portals wiresless but works everywhere else.

Top of the World was not a very good trail last year. Very boring. But the pic was worth it I suppose. Must have taken forever with 10or 12 trucks getting pics!! It was just me and trooper trouble. I wish I was there now!!!

why are we seeing reruns

Triathlete
05/12/2010, 09:23 PM
So here is the scoop (would have gotten one yesterday but after a long day I tried and my 'puter battery died)...
Yesterday a group of about 24 vehicles (which included a 4runner, FJ, jeep, rodeo and 2 trooper) set out at 9am and concoured the Top of the World trail. Pretty straight forward trail. On the way back about half the group decided to head out to Rose Garden Hill. A fun trail with a few small ledges and then a hill with multiple rocky ledged. We worked everyone down the hill without any carnage. Shortly after that the sun started setting and the last couple hours on the trail was in the dark as we exited through Onion Creek. During the day we had cold, windy, rainy and snow flurries which added to the fun. We arrived back at camp at 10:30pm...a long, long day!

Todays trip was a group of 8. We ventured out on Steel Bender. A fun day it was and the weather was a bit nicer but still on the cool side. With a smaller group we had time to play around a bit a try some "alternate" routes on the obstacles. I earned the title "king of the strap" after some of my lines didn't work as well as I thought and took a strap 3 times. But if you haven't been on the end of a strap you haven't been wheeling, right! My rock sliders got a good workout today and did their job.

And now the part you have all been waiting...the pictures!

Well, you will have to wait just a bit longer since the wifi here is slow and it's taking forever to dump them into photbucket...so stand by:bwgy:

alterastro,
I'm not there, so I can't give you the coordinates of exact individual points where photos were taken, but I can give you some info for google earth. Moab is the town in Utah that's closest to all of this. When someone says they are going to Moab, they usually mean a lot of the front country/back country area around Moab, rather than specifically in town. Everybody gets to Moab sooner or later for ice. Several of the trails that the fam is doing is in Canyonlands National Park, and some outside of it. Southern Utah is scattered with national parks and has some of the most fantastic desert scenery on earth. Unlike most national parks over here, motorized vehicles are welcomed off-road within park boundries at Canyonlands and some of the other parks. Start your google earth search with Canyonlands National Park, and I'll bet you'll locate some of the named trails.

These guys must be having a blast, hardly any posts.

The tail pipes are indeed Tom's (Tomdietrying).
As far as coordinates just do a search for the trail name and gps coordinates and you should find sites that list them.
As for Lions Back...it is now closed...private property, so no more vehicles on Lions Back.
There was some pretty good VX carnage but I will let those individuals tell the story since I was not there.

Today I went to 7 Mile Rim with Todd Adams. Was a good trip...lots of scenery and a few chalenging spots to keep me entertained. Here are a few pics from the day.

Got home late Sat. afternoon, awesome week, beyond words!! I especially want to say a very special thank you to the many folks that helped me throughout the week, kept me from falling and such, it really meant a lot to me. This is a terrific group!! And Dub, man, those chocolate monkees were awesome, as always!..hummm. maybe the 151 rum could have contributed to my walking difficulties?:_thinking

Billy ya got some really bad timin' there on that pic! :p Glad you only mentioned Jo!:laugho:

And yes, PK, as a matter of fact, that is my rack! It held my spare quite nicely, especially with my custom ratchet strap in black with purple paw prints! (Well, OK, I also had the Yakima spare tire carrier holding it securely). And Tom (aka Rodney Dangerfield), yes, I know yer innocent on this one....it's pure PK!

And another thing PK, in yer honor, while sitting at the "stoop", Lisa (VX Crazy) was comparing.....um....er...um...rack sizes between her and I.....somehow yer name came up...:_thinking...well, we were a bit drunk when that happened! :mbrasd: You'd a loved it though! :rollo:

Here's a few pics, have more to come tomorrow from Dave's camera (we even let that blindingly bright yellow FJ come with us on Thursday on Fins -N-Things.) I listed some details/comments on the pics in my gallery. Most of these are from Top of The World on Tuesday, which was the formerly known as "VX-only" run and can be done by a stock VX (although bigger tires does help a lot!). An amazingly beautiful trail, and not boring by any stretch, despite what Marlin said about it! Remember Chris, different strokes....not everybody wants or can handle a ton of carnage & broken CVs. :bgwb:

Lining up at the Portal campsite ready to head out to Top of the World: We had about 18 VXs, 2 or 3 Troopers, 1 FJ, 1 4Runner.

Hey Travis! Came all the way from Louisiana! You were awesome! (That's him above in the Dragon) You were on street tires, yet conquered some really tough stuff, you've got the knack for finding the perfect line and modulating the skinny pedal just right! Can't wait to see when you get your new tires & wheels, wow!

Here's Travis, front right tire in pit, but he then tried a different line and just nailed it, used e-brake, and up and over! I followed his line!

After almost 2 hours of driving at night through a blizzard whiteout and icy roads, I now remember why I avoided the Vail Pass most years. Man that was scary as heck! Kudos to those who have to deal with that year round.

My turn showin' some air!
http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/3260/DSCN1875.JPG

Last year, bone stock- got some scuffs on the gas tank skid plate, and a few scuffs on the lowest part of rear cladding (they're off to left here, black color), and flattened the front lower bars of my bull bar. Also took a 2" chunk/gash out of rim of wheel.

This year with the 285/60-18s, lifted it by 1 1/4", made a world of difference! Plus the Kilby plates came in handy, hit them a few times, but not much.
Again, caught some good scuffs on lower rear cladding, seen in this pic as a whitish triangle shape, and the gas tank skid plate. (Need some Kilby's for that area!!)

Also, front right wheel well arch cladding took a heavier scuff from a tree branch/bush....better than falling off the left side!
Plus some typical pinstripes on the side cladding, but nothing on the paint.
No tire or rim damage at all. No mechanical damage either.

None of it really bothers me though! It's well worth it!

BIGGEST ISSUE: Refinish/Restorer chips off when abraded by anything like bushes/branches!! So I have many areas on front fender cladding that's just chipped to all he!l....:_brickwal Since I can't remove it, all I can do is slap on another coat.

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND R/R IF YOU DO ANY WHEELING!!!!!!!!

Nice pic's Sue. Hmmm; regarding rear area skid plate, fellow VX member "MARLIN" mentioned earlier that the CURT Rear Hitch (hang-down model) works quite well as a rear skid on severe departure angles. Essentially, the CURT Rear Hitch will take the damage/scuffing instead of the rear cladding/gas tank. Just a thought for ya'.:bgwb:

EDIT: Case and point. See video in this thread Post #68 of fellow VX member "KODIAK" using his CURT Rear Hitch to slide off a large rock in the road at video time mark 1:50 -- 2:23.

Kona--- Your best solution would be to paint your VX in USAF Camo-pattern. Then simply load it on an outbound USAF C-17 cargo aircraft from Hickim AFB (Hawaii) to Hill AFB (Ogden, Utah). Do MOAB; then fly it back, problem solved. Your only challenge would be getting your VX past USAF security checkpoints (errrr, that would be a rather big challenge).:bgwb:

Luckly, I waited till the last day to lead-foot it and destroy one worn-out CV...LOL:p

Many thanks to all the seasoned VXers, they offered so much hospitallity...
I know I made some very good new friends!!!

I felt so "at home" with all of you!!! Couldnt have asked for a better group of folks!!!

If you look at the picture, he should be riding on the wall about a foot high. Looks like he slipped coming out of Hell's Gate and caught his quarter panel.

#2, Justin, nice collard lizard, how did you manage to catch it? They are fast, and hard to grab with your hands. Pretty lizards though.

#3, JO, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO THE ORW!!!?!?!?!?! In 2008 I did Hell's Revenge and I purposefully decided NOT to do the Gate because of the risk of this happening!!

Balls to the Wall, Jo! Gotta give you props!! :D :D :D

Holy sh*t, what happened to the ORW ?????There was a sputter from some reason and then the engine just wouldn't go on. The result was a slip off the wall and a loud thump that was accompanied by my arm shooting out the window causing me to smack my elbow on slickrock - still hurts a bit. But yeah the ORW has finally been broken in after all these years...

BartMy buddy Steve caught it with his hands somehow. He's not usually that quick so I think we were both amazed!

BTW, wheeling in Steve's stock Geo Tracker is super funny! There's only 6" of ground clearance at the frame but it's light enough to push it off of stuff... which I did.

BartI rode down with my friend Steve in his Burning Man van and then scooted around in his Geo Tracker that he has stored down there... until everyone was too drunk to take me back to it anyway!

Dub...you get those gears/lockers in yet?:bwgy:

Workin' on it Billy...:_wrench:...:yesgray:

It's gonna have to be a multi-tiered project that happens as time off & weather allow.
Today (day off) I tore into the rear axle. Removed the discs/calipers, pulled the axles, & removed the third.

Just to make double sure, I counted the teeth on the ring gear & divided by the number of teeth on the pinion (Thanks Dave) & came up with 4.7777777777777...

Next go round will either be removing the front axle & driving around in 2WD if the weather is nice, or if the weather isn't so nice, I'll dive into the rear third & get the locker installed.

After that, it'll just be to install the diff drop brackets on the front axle, throw the front third in, then button er' all back up & find some dough head kid who thinks his Honda is hot...:naughty:

OK...kidding on that last part...:smilewink

Street racing is bayud...mkay?
