OK, just thinking about my next Moab visit, which will be in 2012 FOR SURE. And being that 2012 will be the last year of human existence on Planet Earth, we need to make Moab 2012 the

BIGGEST VX

IN THE HISTORY
OF VX GATHERINGS!

What's the current record? Close to 30, right? So I say 100 VXes in Moab or bust!! Who's in?

Dream A Little Dream is awesome. R.I.P. Corey Haim.

I love old school punk, but its the bleeding edge into industrial/electro that I like the best.

My grandfather used to tell me the 80s were the start of all that NWO corporate greed stuff too. I'm sure it's true, but I still think culturally the 80s had the best stuff!

A trip in the truck? Granted there are lots of overlooks and little side roads that really don't lead to anywhere, but it's only about 100 miles long. Easy to do in a day

BigSwede
12/08/2011, 08:27 AM
Yeah, I know it can be done in a day...most folks say to take your time and stay out there 2 or 3 days. Maybe with an early start it isn't too rushed to go around in a day, I dunno. That would save the trouble of making camp twice. Maybe on Monday before ZuZoo?

I was looking at the map, and it turns out I have been on a piece of White Rim...some years ago I went down the Shafer Trail with a coupla other rigs (don't remember who, probably 8 or 9 years ago). Looks like we went down Lathrop Canyon to the river, then back. Those switchbacks are awesome.

Understand it sure ain't no 4 star hotel...heck it's barely a 1 star....and it's a motel not hotel. But it's fine...you won't be in your room much anyway :laugho:

It has two rows of rooms that face each other with the parking lot in between them. The rooms on the side where you see most of the pics where our fam is hanging out is the "old" building, rooms smaller.

The other building across the parking lot is newer, larger rooms, a little more modern. I chose these rooms cuz some of those rowdy folk can party till the wee hours...and it's a bit quieter...:goof: J/K boyz...and Lisa! :laugho:

The parking lot is like 50 ft wide, so it's not like your room is "far away" from the "stoop".
Here's some pics to give you some idea. These ar all showing the "older" building.

Question for you guys - Sonya has agreed to go to Moab this year (:D) but we'll have to bring the girls with us. The inn you guys stay in sounds okay for a pair of adults, but I'm a little concerned there won't be much to do for the little ones during the day (Sonya will probably stay in the hotel in the afternoons so the girls can nap). Are there any places to stay that might have stuff like wifi, pay-per-view, etc? Entertainment options will make the time in the hotel pass much faster.

Driving - got to show off the 5-speed! ;) The plan is to head out there with you guys, then drive to Wisconsin and spend 2 weeks with her family before heading home. Fortunately the girls ride really well, but we're still trying to break up the trip as much as possible. Probably drive to Colorado then take a day off to bum around a bit before heading on to Moab.

Any restrictions with bringing a dog that I should know about?

Driving - got to show off the 5-speed! ;) The plan is to head out there with you guys, then drive to Wisconsin and spend 2 weeks with her family before heading home. Fortunately the girls ride really well, but we're still trying to break up the trip as much as possible. Probably drive to Colorado then take a day off to bum around a bit before heading on to Moab.

Any restrictions with bringing a dog that I should know about?

Yeah, there is...can't bring a dog to a National Park. Canyonland National Park has a few of the trails that some VXers go on, so no doggie there. You may have seen one pic of Zeus (Justin) with Menace, that was in Canyonland, and he didn't get busted there, but did tell me he got "ticketed or fined" another time with the dog.

I found a doggie day care/boarding place just 2-3 miles South of town. Paul Phines and I were going to keep our 3 dogs (my 2) together for the day we went there. As it turned out I was too pooped for that trip, and just Paul kenneled his dog there (I think overnight). Can't recall the name of the place right now, but if Sonya is staying with the girls, she should keep the dog. The lady that ran the doggie place was a bit, shall we say "eccentric"...she must have called me on my cell phone 5-6 times to find out if we were coming to drop the dogs off, blah blah blah.. I told her I'd pay for the night even if we didn't make it, and she was spun up about that as it would take a space (well 2 spaces) away from some one else that needs to kennel their dog/s.....it was weird. I'd look for a different kennel if you need one.

Pets are not allowed in the backcountry of Canyonlands National Park. This includes all four-wheel-drive roads and hiking trails. Pets may accompany visitors in frontcountry areas, which include overlooks, paved and two-wheel-drive dirt roads, and the Squaw Flat and Willow Flat campgrounds, but must be leashed when outside a vehicle. Pets may not be left unattended, tied or physically confined in the frontcountry to facilitate backcountry travel.

Yup, that's the one. Yes, she does really care. Guess I was just frustrated since she kept calling when I was on the trail and talking and talking and asking for an ETA....and I had no idea how much further/how long etc...plus ya can't drive with one hand and speakerphone was useless.

Got a double queen room so hoping to find a room mate to help defray costs. Anyone interested in rooming for the week (or should I just call back and get the king room)? Checking in on Sunday the 13th and checking out on Saturday the 19th.

I understand that stock VX would be able to hold its own, but I have 913s on the way. Are there any other recommendations for a first timer to Moab?

A completely stock VehiCROSS can take on most of what we usually encounter on the trails in Moab. Check the links Ldub provided, and get yourself a CB & a full sized spare.

I have convoyed out to Moab a few times with BigSwede and always like to add another VX to the road trip, so PM me with your plans & we'll make it happen!

I don't know how much my opinion really matters since I may or may not be able to make it to Moab this year, but I wouldn't go for Gold Bar Rim if there are any stock VXers; I went on that one last year and had a small panic attack when I got to the waterfall obstacle. Ended up parking my girl on the side of the trail, and rode with Dave for the rest of the way. Not a real friendly trail for the novice (or for those prone to anxiety and without any meds on board, lol). Fins and Things went just fine though, and I have no opinion on the others, as I haven't been on them...yet. ;Dy;

I rode with Jay in his FJ on Top of the World, after my Trooper started having alternator issues. Anyway, the ride was so cushy by comparison, I actually felt a little disconnected from the driving experience. And I was surprised at how large a vehicle they really are, definitely wider than the Trooper.

Having said all that, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with an FJ someday. There aren't a lot of good off-road vehicles being made these days. Xterras and 4Runners are too cramped for me, Land Cruisers and Rovers are too expensive.

So this will be my first time going and my first time meeting anyone from the group. Guess I gotta do some reading to find out what I'm in store for...

Is it an adventure where you bring the camping gear or just a 1 day thing?

Can I bring my dog?

Which trail am I going on and with who?

My baby has never been off road, do I need to run down a check list of things to look at and/or service before going?

Are there any other "smokin hippies" in here? lol or just me

Maybe I should buy one of those luggage carriers (if that's even the name of them) to go on the roof rack?

I would like to go all out, as much as I can without scratchin my baby. In just 2 weeks she will have a brand new fresh proton paint job (4 layers paint, 5 clear). Right now she is completely stripped (no seats, all interior panels except dash area, carpet, hood liner, roofrack, outdoor mirrors, roofrack, all exterior cladding, hood insert, door seals, etc.) getting ready for new paint and lambo doors. I wanna take her out, but not to the point where I totally mess up her new paint...

I'm really f***ing excited about this. I have a feeling its going to be awesome!!!! Just meeting everyone and seeing MORE VX's will be worth the trip!

Not being mechanically inclined, just a little concerned about what things I should check or service between now and then. My ride is REALLY ROUGH.

just find someone similarly equiped who has been there before and follow them. They will usually take a safe line and allow you to see where you need to be. MSHardiman and VXKat are good choices. When in dought just ask for a spot. There are some great spotters. Just ask around to find out who is good. Have faith in your spotter...a lot of times things look way different from the drivers seat. Your spotter can see thing you can't. And lastly if I am ever there with you... most will agree, don't follow me :D
As far as how long...you are welcome to come for as long as you wish. Most arrive Mon in prep for Tue VX run. Most leave Sun morning. Some show up earlier/stay longer.

YUP! You've got lots of reading to do....read each of the Moab Zu-Zoo threads for the various years, will have lots of info.

Start here....this is a good overview::thumbup: http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showpost.php?p=197086&postcount=6

Then here's some other info.....
ALSO SEE THE PICS AT BOTTOM...GIVES SOME IDEA OF THE TERRAIN, OBSTACLES, TIRE IN BASKET, ETC....
NONE OF THESE DAMAGED MY VX!!!! (EXCEPT THE LAST PIC WHERE I SCRAPED FRONT AND REAR LOWER CLADDING....MARK & SCOTT ARE GOING TO "TEACH" ME THIS YEAR HOW NOT TO DO THAT AGAIN!)

It's usually 4-5-6-7 days, but you can stay for as short or long as you want, some stay longer than a week.

Many camp, usually at "Pack Creek" campground.

Many stay at the "Red Rock Lodge"....a pretty cheap style motel right in town area. That's where the famous (or infamous?) "Stoop" is, and many gather there after the trails and hang out and laugh a lot!

Dog are NOT allowed allowed in the "backcountry" of National Parks. MOST trails are NOT in a NP, but some are, such as Canyonland N.P. so you have to know where your trail is and whether it's in a N.P.
Read this thread: http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showpost.php?p=249307&postcount=77

Smokin' hippies....guess that all depends on what you're, um, smokin'....:goof:

Luggage rack???...I think you probably mean a cargo basket that attaches to the OEM roof rack/cross bars. Many VXers have one, but not 100% necessary. Many carry a full size spare ...mine is a 285/60-18, I can get it strapped down in the back cargo area (backseat removed) but it eats a ton of cargo space obviously.....so I prefer it on the roof.

Potential damage to your truck....some "damage" is possible, (unless you're MSHardeman or Moncha...who have never so much as gotten a tiny scratch on theirs! Careful, precise driving!) Many are like you, and don't want to get much damage & can minimize it by learning about and asking about the various trails the gang may be going on. I choose the trails where damage is very unlikely. I don't like getting pinstriped, but hey, I just finished a complete polish job with Griot's Garage and scratches?...WHAT SCRATCHES? If I get more, well, I know I can do another buff job.
The most common is scraping the undercarriage a bit here and there, and the lowest part of the front cladding, and the rear gas tank skid plate, and maybe the lowest part of rear cladding. I have a few dents on things under there, but no repairs needed.

**Take the time to look through the MOAB pictures on the site, you'll get a better idea of the terrain.

ALSO, GET THE TRAIL BOOK ON MOAB BY RICHARD WELLS....IT GIVES YOU A TON OF DETAILS, AND RANKS THE DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY....BUT EVEN SOME RATED AS "DIFFICULT" I DID WITH NO PROBLEM AND NO DAMAGE, LIKE HELL'S REVENGE, FINS & THINGS.

****THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE TO BE A SPOTTER FOR YOU ... YOU CAN SEE MARK SPOTTING FOR ME IN MANY OF MY PICS, HELPING AND TEACHING ME HOW TO HANDLE THE TERRAIN***

****PLUS MANY OBSTACLES HAVE A BYPASS AROUND THEM...SO FOLKS LIKE ME CAN WIMP OUT AND GO AROUND! ***

****ALSO, YOU CAN USUALLY FIND AN "OPEN SEAT" WITH SOMEBODY AND RIDE ALONG AND LEARN THE ROPES ***

The Tuesday of the week has historically been designated as the "VX only run"....which was for VXs only, :goof:... and a trail is selected that is specifically doable for a totally stock VX. But that run has really morphed into a "VX and other Zoos run", but again, the main criteria is that a stock VX be able to do it. Our former Trail Boss (Todd Adams) used to help us select which trail, and VXers gave him input and suggestions. Unfortunately Todd passed away a few months ago (RIP :( ) so Jack (pbkid) started a thread after several people going this year started discussing it. He put it as a survey so everybody can vote.

Ah ok, so does everyone go on at least one trail together or do people split up (some go to easy trails while others go to harder)?

I'd like to go waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out in no man's land and camp out.... way out in mother nature (i loooooove nature) for Tuesday night and head back Wed. This would be a break for me (haven't had a vacation or more than 4 or 5 consecutive days off in over 5 years)

Just start at pg 1 of this thread my friend...:yesgray:

After you wade through all the opinions on music, Swede mentions camping a trail, the dog issue is discussed, & I'll bet there's a bunch of other stuff you'll find helpful.

That's exactly what happens....all together on Tuesday's trail, remainder of week smaller groups form and go different ways.

Just remember no dogs in the NP, and I've been told they do check. Zeus got a ticket/fine a few years ago for his dog.

Generally speaking, dogs are allowed in the National Parks on the paved roads (leashed of course). They are not allowed off-pavement, backcountry. This isn't a perfect guide as there are a few dirt roads (like the road to the parking lot at the trailhead for Elephant Hill) that dogs are allowed on, but AFAIK dogs are allowed on all paved road areas.

But, as Sue has mentioned, most of the trails are not in the National Parks.

also, you dont necessarily NEED every little accessory just to visit moab, in fact, a completely stock vehicross as no issues doing 75% of the trails in moab.

Sure, it helps to have a tow strap, compressor, roof rack, spare tire, etc. but it certainly isnt necessary.

To be completely honest, with this group of people, pretty much anything you forget....dub probably has an extra one laying around. He will usually loan parts to people if they ask nicely, but you will probably owe him some favors back in the long run. ;) (i know i do. Dont mean to offer all of your spares dub, but you know its true :) )

point is, get you and your VX to moab, with whatever you would like to bring and you will quickly learn the rest :)
(also, pretty much anything you forget can be 'gotten' in moab, the town is pretty well suited for people forgetting important parts of their trip)
also, billy touched on spotting and following. This is one of the more important things to learn in order for your car to be safe and to make sure you end up on the right trails.
Just ask around at the stoop which trails will suit you, and the group will lead you to the right group of 'fellow VX'ers', depending on your skill level. Usually that means you either stick with the easy, moderate or difficult group. If you want an easier and less 'vx bashing' trip, stick with someone like Sue (vxkat) or mark (mshardeman), both of their VX's are prestine and they take very good care of them, they are safe to follow :)

If your looking for more of a challenge follow billy (triathlete), me, jo (jofotoz), swede (bigswede), etc.

cant wait to meet you Ty.

I gotta tell you guys, prep for this trip is KILLING me. So worried I won't get it all done in time. Ordered a new set of tires today because two of my Yokos have uneven wear and I don't have a matching size spare. TireRack has a good deal going on the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors, they're $191 each and there's an $80 mail-in rebate if you buy at least 4. I bought 5 in 265/60/18 (what I'm running now, decided not to go bigger and risk big rubbing problems) and put road hazard protection on them for a little more than $1K. Not bad for 5 really nice tires.

I also ordered a set of super sliders and diff guard from Rocky Road today. Maybe it's overkill for what I'll likely do while I'm there, but given that we have to drive a few thousands miles to Wisconsin and then back to VA AFTER we go crawling with you guys I don't want to take any unnecessary chances. All you guys on the east coast keep a watch for a potential for-sale ad for them after I get back (depends on how they look).

Btw I'm looking forward to seeing what my MPG looks like on the long drive. Got to believe the manual tranny is helping me out some, I'm running oversize tires, a slight lift, 150 lbs. in skid plates, and had four people in the truck in a combination of city and highway driving. Got nearly 17 MPG with all that.

Looking forward to seeing you guys but man I wish I could slow down the clock some. :o

All you guys on the east coast keep a watch for a potential for-sale ad for them after I get back (depends on how they look).

Yeah, prep for Moab is soooooo stressful....mostly self-imposed :slap:..but us organization freeks just have to do what we gotta do! :laugho:
The first trip is the worst, now I'm barely neurotic for this one (#4)..:goof:

I...er um, I mean Dave and his bro are going to put my basket and spare on...with our nifty T4B designed hoist system , but then I remembered the one missing rail cap...Think we could loosen all 4 brackets and towers, and then just barely lift the one side to put that one custom cap on later....think that would work? Guess I really need to look at the geometry/angles and physics of the set up to see if that will work....

If you're really backed up/maxed out/stressed out/ and out of time, I can just re-use my damaged cap for this year. Let me know what you think, so then I'll know whether to put the damaged one on now.

Good luck on your prep!

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, I do look forward to being able to relax and have fun for a few days! It's just that this is probably the only time I'll go due to the distance and cost, so I want to do it right if possible. But Sonya agrees with you that I need to take some deep breaths. :)

Sue I should be able to take care of your cap no problem, I'm traveling sometime in the next few weeks so I'll just take it and the Dremel with me. (It'll give me something to do at night in the hotel.) We should be able to put it on with your rack in place, the trick is to loosen the other three covers and unbolt all the brackets so we can lift the rack on one side.

Hey guys, I've been going back and forth with my plans about moab.

I finally got an answer back from my boss, and I think i got it financially figured out.

However, i still have to figure out sleeping situations. Its going to be Diane (my sister) and I, from the 18th through the 20th.
2 questions, does anyone at the stoop have room to put us up for a couple days, and we will be happy to get you some money to help pay for the reservations?
If not, no worries, who's doin the group camping this year, and can we grab a corner to throw up our tent?

Im sure the camping question has been answered somewhere in the 14 pages of this thread, but can you just humor me for a moment and give me some help? :)

thanks guys, cant wait to see you all !!!!!
