View Full Version : Driver Side Window/Lock control

All works ok but I cannot lower the passenger side window.

When I click to raise the pass side window I hear a relay go "click" over on the pass side. But when I click the button to lower the window, nothing happens. All other switches appear to work OK.

I took the switch assembly apart and checked/cleaned all plastics. and cleaned and lubed the electrics with appropriate solvents, no joy, same behavior. I can raise and lower the pass window using the pass side switch. And if I lower the window using the pass side switch, I can raise it using the DRIVER side switch no prob.

Any ideas other than replacing the switch panel? If not, anyone got one for cheap? ;)

I haven't looked yet, but would it be possible to rewire and bypass/delete the window lock button? That way, no money out of pocket...

Those switch units are all miniture relays and integrated circuits. Mine has fried completely and Isuzu want $500 for a new one, but then I have a right hand drive.

It sounds like the relevant relay has fried in the drivers door unit. You can check that its not a broken wire by temporarily running one and seeing if it works. There is a downloadable wiring diagram in the downloads section that should tell you which wires to splice.

Failing that, do you have another member near you who let you try their switch unit?

Yes I saw those two relays on the circuit board. In theory I could jumper the contacts of the suspect relay to diagnose that the relay has failed, but which contacts to jump would be guesswork on my part, not a good idea.

No I don't have access to another switch unit. That would make things far too easy lol.

I am going to proceed on an assumption that the relay has failed (in one direction) and just keep my eyes peeled for another drivers side switch panel.

Thanks for your input Alterastro.

Sadly, no progress to report. Sorry. I figure I'll just have to buy another switch panel when I can find one.

Darn, just saw a driver's side on ebay last week, sold for $70.

Here's the same seller selling the pass side, if it's any help to you: Only want $40 for this side :_thinking

Here's a list of ebay sellers that have been selling VX parts from their salvage yards. Maybe contact them and see if they have one.

WTF? The first link you posted was listed as a window regulator? go figger...

Anyways thanks Kat!! I could have done all that legwork (mousework?) myself, but you are the Queen of fleabay once again.:bwgy:

For comparison, a new switch panel from St Charles Isuzu is about $66. I can't tell you if it's been discontinued or if it's available here in the States or if it must be shipped over from Japan on the slow boat (6-8 weeks.) If you get a copy of the parts list from the Downloads section, you will have access to part numbers. I've priced a few things from Merlin @ St Charles (800-727-8066) and so far the final cost has been what is shown on the price list you downloaded X 1.377. Merlin will provide FREE next day shipping (or next day + 6-8 weeks) if you mention this website! :)

I need to replace both of my switch panels but hesitate on buying used. Both of mine are loose because whoever replaced the SBC Window Brackets (http://www.streetboutiquecustoms.com/vx.html) to fix the "twisting window issue" didn't follow the instructions and accidentally broke some tabs off both when they removed them. Unfortunately, both sides are in such bad shape, I don't know if I also need to replace the door panels to completely fix the issue. In other words, there may be broken tabs on my red/black door panels too, but without one in good condition, I can't tell. (Door panels are about $320 each - YIKES!)

I wondered about the "regulator" description too. I didn't think the electronics under the window buttons were considered the regulator, but I don't actually know where the regulator is??

I accidently cracked mine recently.....:mado::mado::_brickwal...letting it dangle while I removed the door panel and replaced my rubber window track....and the door accidently closed...pinching the black plastic handle between the sill and door and slightly cracking the pull handle part...:_brickwal (yes I KNOW it detaches but pinching that thing is a real beotch for me!)

So....after a total fiasco trying to fix it with super glue which resulted in nothing but glued fingers and lots of cuss words....I called Merlin... told me a new handle WITHOUT the ELECTRONICS would be $67!! :freek:...just the freakin' plastic!!.....(so the part must be available)....so with tail between legs, I wrapped black electric tape around it....for now....:(

The regulator is the the gizmo inside the door that actually moves to lift the window. If you have the parts catalog, it's on page 15, top diagram in the far right column, note #8.

I really can't be angry with the previous owner of mine - I probably would have broken the switch panel, too. I just happened to stumble upon the correct removal instructions here while looking for something else. Heck, I'm the moron who broke the driver's side door latch mechanism just by removing the door panel. One of those bull in a china shop moments.

GASP! ;eeko; ;eeko; ;eeko; GASP AGAIN!

Yikes, I assumed the electronics were included with the switch panel and thought I'd be just that much better off by having new switches, too. But now I see you're right - the switches are separate. $63 (right) or $184 (left) for the switches (X 1.377 mark-up). So $66 just for the plastic - OUCH!

You used duct tape - I've been tempted to take the easy/cheap way out and just secure the switch plate/handle using a skinny black zip tie. I've NEVER had ANY success with Super Glue in ANY situation. :( Hey, have you ever played around with J.B. Weld? It's pretty awesome! The first time I encountered it a friend was playing with it and made a handle (like on a beer mug) on a Coke bottle.
