Unless the world ends, I run into financial difficulties, the VX breaks beyond repair, etc. I plan on being there. Maybe I'll drag a friend or two along.

There are two major lodging venues, the redrock inn, http://red-rocklodge.com/ thats where dub and some of the others crash, and then at the Portal campground: http://portalrvresort.com/. At the campground there are two options, the group site, no power, its basically a field for tents. Or you can get your own camp site with power and whatnot.

Redrock is about 60-70 bucks a night, group site at Portal is 21 a person/night, and a tent site of your own is 30/night. I will be getting a tent site with power:) Worth the 9 bucks for me and there are two of us.

thought: we should make a point of booking the whole run of the stoop.
if there's an empty room we should buy it out.

better yet get everyone there and take over the whole place, no one to complain then.

Nowhere for me to park a 35ft trailer at the hotel:(

I use the Hampton Inn at the north end of town, they have a parking area
behind and uphill of the hotel that I use when I have the raft trailer (16') hooked to the VX. They have me park at the very top, against the curb in a curved "no parking" area. Then I park my second vehicle (07 Rubicon) in the first space in front of the VX, so I don't get blocked in. Works great.
That spot should accommodate a 35 footer + vehicle. They are a little pricey $140-150 a night, but their beds are heavenly, full breakfast is included, and they are one of the few in town that have double queens in their regular rooms. My husband and I are river rats as well as 4 wheelers and live only 5 hours away from Moab. We like to run the "Moab Daily" stretch of the Colorado River in the Rte 128 canyon from Hittle Bottom to Take Out Beach. :bgwo: Easy access to that lot as well, with plenty of turn around room. Most people park closer to the hotel entrance down on the lower level, so that upper lot doesn't see a lot of action because of the distance. Check them out online.......might be just the answer.

We thought we had convinced our daughter to hold off on her wedding till Oct 2012 so that we could afford Moab in 2011. Not only is she back on for Oct 2011, she has Gucci taste on Mom & Dad's Walmart budget. It looks like t4b will be at Moab 2012.

I'm surprised she was willing to wait an entire year to begin with, seems like everyone I know is getting married in less than six months from their engagement (including me lol). Spending big $$$ on a wedding is such a waste, being on the other side of both a big and small wedding (the latter being just the two of us and a preacher on the beach) I can't imagine spending all that money again. Any chance she would put off the big ceremony for later if she could get married privately sooner?

I have absolutely no idea where she developed that "Gucci taste" - mebbe she learnt it in college.

Ash - no way is she backing down to a small, intimate wedding. If anything, she's outta control on this. The place she's currently looking at having it is over 2X the budget we allowed.

Of course the current situation isn't helping either. Brother in law just moved back in with us since he's been outta work for the past 8 months. Eldest daughter is prolly moving back too since she & BF broke up.

Life is so much fun at times.

My sis has Gucci taste, yet has no job and expects single mommy to pay for everything... She has had a serious reality check for her senior year in high school.

If you are paying for it, it should be by your rules with some compromise to accommodate her wants. Otherwise, she should pony up the dough and since she isn't likely to do that... YOU get to go to Moab!

Problem solved!

That's my non-parental inexperienced opinion. :bwgy:

Well, I am sad to say we are out. The wife talked me into going to the bahamas. This is our last spring in Charleston, and the cruise ship departs from here. I can do the entire cruise including shore excursions for less than what I would spend in gas alone on the trip to Moab. Maybe next year if we end up on the west coast, and I am not deployed...

Well, I don't even have a VX yet, but looking thru last year's pix got me very interested. My question is, tho, are there trails for a novice there? I don't have any experience driving off road (well, not intentionally, anyway, LOL) or on trails like that, and would be a bit nervous taking a newly adopted (or "re-homed") VX on some of those trails.

But, the hubby has done some jeeping, and I am willing to learn. Besides, I love that area. Looks like a lot of fun...

Triathlete
01/08/2011, 07:17 AM
There are trails of all levels there. And don't worry, we take good care of everyone. You will quickly learn who the good spoters are and they will get you through unscathered. Of course there is always some risk envolved...even driving down the street.

Billy's right, spotters are really important. If your VX is "stock", you pretty much can expect you're going to get some things scratched up, like your front lower cladding perhaps, and the rear cladding down under by the gas tank skid. Your tail pipe may get a bit "reshaped" :goof: And your fender cladding may get brushed up a little.

Thought I'd share some pics so you can get an idea of what it's like. Hope it helps!

Here's some general type of terrain you can do as a stock VX and as a fairly beginner. I was stock the first year I went, but 2nd year I got oversized tires. These first shots I have the larger tires, so I'm raised up a bit for extra clearance.

This part is STRAIGHT DOWN and you slide down even with full brakes applied...this was my first slide. It was awesome, but it did scrape the he!! out of my front bull bar and lower front cladding. That's why most VXers don't have a front bull bar on when in Moab....:goof:
First pic is when I was stock, 2nd with bigger tires....scraped both times, just not as bad the 2nd trip  (I think these are actually 2 different hills BTW...but same effect)

Aw shucks Billy, thanks...:mbrasd:....I think. Thanks for the compliment Sue, but I learned my spotting skills (which are minimal at this point) from listening to people like Billy. It takes a while to have confidence in your spotters because sometimes it looks completely wrong from inside the truck, but once you learn to just let go and trust you can do some really amazing things.

MsC, I say if you can make it out to Moab then DEFINITELY do. On top of the great scenery and trails, just meeting some of the rest of the family is worth the trip. I was stock my first couple of year out in Moab, and if you take your time you should come out unscathed. As everyone who has seen me in Moab will tell you, I drive like a 70 year old grandma going to church on Sunday on the trails. Slow and steady wins the race....and keeps your VX (mostly) scratch free.

Jo- If i can get a local VX'er to come by my parents house ill fab em up myself, then all we have to do is weld em on at the stoop... or if worse comes to worst, ill fab em here, then you can find a shop in moab to pay just to weld them to the frame. If there are any takers on bringing a VX by my parents house to help another VX'er out, let me know. Their house is between Monument and Castle Rock.

There's always an open seat/open invitation in somebody's VX, so you can fly out and join up that way!

If you do choose to drive, there's usually a Colorado convoy you could meet up with...at least that last leg wouldn't be so lonely!

Hey Paul (phines) are you going to make it this year since you moved back to VA? If he is, you could meet up with him for a mini-convoy....

My VX gets 12ish city and high 13s on freeway with 34s. Bigswede, didyour 99 troop have 4.56 or 4.30s?. My wife's RS definitely gets better mpg than the VX. (maybe the 3.2 has something to do with it?)

We made the trip from charleston, SC to Moab 2 years ago. I towed the VX behind my Expedition. Got somewhere around 10mpg average.

If I was doing it this year, with the diesel F250, it would be somewhere around 1800in fuel. Plus an oil change in that truck costs me about 150 since it holds 4 gallons of oil:( 1 gal rotella synthetic is 23 bucks, filter is 20 bucks) Just to drive to Moab would cost me well over 2K, that doesn't include all of the hotels and whatnot. That is why we are going to the Bahamas next weekend instead:):dan_ban::dan_ban:

BigSwede
03/06/2011, 07:04 PM
My old 99 Trooper had 4.30 gears, as do all 98+ Troopers. It would get ~17 hwy mpg, give or take 1.

My RS gets around 16 hwy, not bad for a lifted Trooper with 35" balloon tires. Sometimes it does better, I got 20 mpg from Grand Junction to Sterling CO on the way back last year. I always get better mileage going through the mountains for some reason. I think the manual tranny helps some, but I have the EPA est mpg sticker that came with it new, and the EPA hwy estimate is only 17 mpg (in stock configuration of course).

I just talked to Portal RV and they don't have any tent sites available at all (group or individual) until May 17th. This disappoints me, as I will be arriving on the 15th.

I really don't want to have to set up camp twice.

I'm kinda sick of Portal screwing with us every year, and I'm thinking of going to Pack Creek Campground. They redid their showers/bathrooms, which removes my only objection to the place. Tent sites are $17.50 for up to 3 adults...anybody wanna share a site (not the tent, just the site) from the 15th to the 22nd?

Billy, Jack, I am so down for Metal Masher since I broke last time I was on it. It was my first time out with my green Jeep and I tried to scale a wall with an undercut. Found out the rear springs are way too stiff and that a 1310 u-joint is way too small for a D60 and 37"s. After a few attempts the last one stretched the rear axle yoke straps out. I fixed it best I could but broke a newly weakened strap trying the next wall so had to turn around. Redemption! Although I probably won't attempt Widowmaker more than once

It's official now! Inspired by Jack's post, I just booked my room at Red Rocks for ZuZoo. :dan_ban: They gave me a discount (nothing huge, but much appreciated) for being a return customer.
Now I'm SUPER antsy and ready to head out to Moab.

Can we go, can we go, can we go........like NOW!?

Doesn't really look like it.... a few from TX, MN, one from LA, that's about as far East. But I'm not sure if Paul (phines) is coming, he's in VA now.

I had some reservations like that at first, especially being a "girl". You get a pretty fair idea of what most folks are like on the forum. Really friendly crowd, very welcoming and tons -o-fun! Since your schedule lined up AND you're within what, a 9 -10 hr drive, I would highly recommend it at least once!

You don't have to do the crazy/metal masher kind of thing either, so you can have a great time on some trails and not get your VX thrashed, if that's of concern. You don't have to stay the whole time, either. Hope you come by!

spaceCADETzoom, I would second, third and fourth what everyone else said about meeting the "family" for the first time. I was a little apprehensive, but because we all have this goofy little PUV in common that gives us something to talk about right out of the box. After we finish geeking out over the VX (which never really happens) the conversation moves on to other area's, and it's amazing how much many of us have in common.

It's really just a fun loving group (or is that grope ) and I look forward to seeing them again every year, and meeting new VXers every chance I get.

spaceCADET, many of us stay at the Red Rocks Lodge in downtown Moab (by no means a five star joint, but comfy). This is "the stoop" that you have probably read about, and where many of us gather on a nightly basis to drink, hang out, tell war stories and just generally enjoy each others company. There is also usually a good group of Zooers who will camp at The Portal campground, but it sounds like that won't happen this year and they will be going somewhere else.

It really doesn't matter where you stay, because it's really just a place to sleep, and there isn't much of that going on due to the late night antics at the stoop. There are quite a few hotels in town ranging from expensive to not so much.

It would be great if you could make it out and help us represent Colorado. There is usually a convoy that goes on that Monday as people who are coming from the East pick up more VXers as they travel across the country. I won't be able to make that this year, but hopfully someone will start a thread for it soon.

It takes me 8 hrs, so add 90 mins or so for you.

You are looking at about 10 hours to drive from Phx. Quickest way is through Globe, Show Low, Holbrook...40 to 191 north to Moab.

So...I'm working on planning a massive, awesome vacation since I haven't had a "real vacation" since 2003. Those weekend flings in Seattle or MT are fun, yet unfulfilling. So I think Moab is in order. Though if I'm driving that far south, I'm not just going on some petty excursion...I'm making a true journey of my trip; pre-Moab I'm totally going to Vegas. I have one friend who is waiting on clearance for days off work and flying to Vegas from MT that weekend of the 13th-16th...anyone else care to join us for a weekend of drinking and gambling and other such shenanigans? ;Dy;;Dy;;Dy;

Also another important thing: hotel rates suck. Anyone else flying solo and want to share a room in Moab? I'm totally cool with bringing my air mattress and sleeping on the floor; I'm 26 and pretty resilient, I can sleep just about anywhere...I'd sleep in the back of the VX if it had a shower. ;py;

One more thing: I've never been offroad before. Is there anyone else I can follow who plans on taking all the easy trails? Like something akin to the bunny hill with skiing? My VX is bone stock too, lol...should I get new tires before I head south?

I'm really hoping I can make this happen...my last final is BioOrganic Chemistry at 3:00P on Friday the 13th, and I plan to either take off from campus and begin my trek to Las Vegas directly after (probably showing up in Vegas sometime around 3 or 4 in the AM), or going home, going to sleep, and waking up at around 3 or 4 in the AM Saturday then heading out of town. Not sure yet. Either way, I'll be in Moab the 16th or 17th...

meowmix-
dont be worried at all about doing easy trails. Once you are in MOAB and you see how we run it, everything will make more sense to you.

Daily, there are different groups of people who choose trails that they would like to do and we all break up our separate ways. Some choose difficult trails and others pick easier or more scenic trails.

There are plenty of people who go out to moab in a stock VX with no issues at all (although most upgrade their VX after their first trip to moab ). And on the majority of the difficult trails there are always bypasses as well, which its always fun to watch the big boys try the big stuff :naughty:

Just always feel free to ask a veteran or trail leader if the trail they are doing that day has bypasses, we generally know how the trails pan out and if a stock VX can handle it. If you feel uncomfortable, feel free to come ask me, i dont consider myself a veteran, but i have been on most of the trails that the group does. My name is Jack.

Just a thought Ms Meow...

If you can get to Moab on the 16th, you will be able to join in the VX "MASS" run on the 17th.....:_steering

Its a great way to get comfortable on an easy trail....meet / greet and bond with everyone,
and hook up with others of similar experience and 'ambitions' for the rest of the week...

...and of course, have a brew on the "Stoop" after!

Look fwd to meeting you.

Meow, you won't need to worry about finding the right line. Just find someone that is similarly equiped and follow them. Some hood examples are Sue (VX Kat), Mark (MSHardeman), or Scott (Moncha...aka the boss man). They all have fun on the trail but tend to be a little saner in choosing their lines. Also at any point if you don't feel comfortably just give a holler amd there are many of uw that will be more than happy to spot you through a difficult spot. You will be amazed at what even a bone stock VX is capable of!

Lol...good work VT; I ought to get plenty of responses now, lol. Can't help my lengthy posts sometimes -- I'm a writer. I like to write stuff, anything; sometimes too much stuff. Though I'll try to mind my gigantic paragraphs of complete BS from now on... :laughy:

Thanks everyone for the comforting words, I was already feeling mild anxiety about going offroad, though I feel somewhat better now, lol. If others can do it in a stock VX, I can do it in a stock VX ;Dy;

...I will definitely be there for the mass VX run on the 17th. I'll probably leave Vegas the evening of the 16th, and Moab isn't a far drive.

Lol at your representations of yourself and other forum people Dub; I especially like that little dancing banana. I can't wait until I can legitimately use that thing in a post one day...that will be a satisfactory day.

It's Moab, Utah, a beautiful area of natural rock formations, sand, water crossings and other beautiful scenery which is a mecca for off-roading enthusiasts. Arches National Park and Canyonland State Park are right next to it. A lot of the rock is often a smoother surface rock, thus it's called "slickrock", and it's kind of a cinnamon orange color. Check out my gallery or Moncha's there's about a 500 pics from the past Moab trips. Many Isuzu enthusiasts go in May, I think this year it's about year 11, 12 or 13.
