View Full Version : Does your VX have more power in cooler weather??

Mine does!! I have an annoying 8 mile stretch of highway to get to work and there is one 3/4 mile stretch where I can pass. I always always always get stuck behind some slow poke doing 38 in the 45. Everyday!!! but today I got to pass...ha ha ha. BLEW the old folks doors off. I'm in Florida and I think the denser cooler air now definately makes a difference.

Yes, it is a well known fact that colder air creates more HP within the air/fuel mixture (greater atomization). That's specifically why land speed record attempts in exotic sports cars are normally conducted on very chilly mornings in the Autumn like the Aero by Shelby Cars in Southeastern Washington State.

Except that nowadays, the winter mix (more ethenol) on fuel actually decreases performance & gas mileage.

Does more dense air increase drag? Seems quarter mile times might go up, but MPG at speed might fall.

Come to think of it, doesn't having more dense air in the combustion chamber mean you need more fuel just to ward off running lean?

That's why we have air intake temperature sensors, to tell the computer what temp the air is so it can adjust fuel accordingly.

Worry not my friend, the mighty ECU that does all the thinkin' for the VX's plant can compensate for up to 5 psi of boost (thus far) :naughty:

It'll more than deal with air temp & density.

The only problem I ever encounter is at altitude, sometimes it'll throw a few "lean during acceleration" cel's.
I also get a few cel's when the MAF gets crudded up with K&N filter oil now & then.
A quick blast of this stuff (http://www.crcindustries.com/auto/content/prod_detail.aspx?S=Y&PN=05110) generally clears that right up...:yesgray:

Should be at least a few more years...I hope.

Also, anything that increases power usually will kill mileage, that's why hypermilers generally try to heat their intake air to increase mileage.

Hey dude, it was just a rep of the only REAL MAF cleenr out there...:yesgray:

I currently have 14 cases in the bunker, awaiting the ZOMBIE REVOLUTION (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=15033&highlight=zombie+revolution).

Iffn; ya don't got's none when the feceis (fee-Ceez = poop) hits the fan, don't come cryn' 2 me...:laughing:

Ldub: I use the same stuff on my MAF, and my droid phone to clear CELS if any.

I was wondering if the MAF actually not only reads the amount of air, but also its density, but the simple name of it "MASS air flow" sensor certainly implies it.

And to the OP, yes my VX just loves this cold dry air down here in southern Alabama right now. It just gulps it up and spits it out as horsepower. I'd like to think it was my new intake to take the credit, but nope... its the air to a large extent. IMHO

I put some 93 octane in it plus the very cold air and I'm having a blast! And with the snow on the roads it's like an ATV (4wheeler) that's legal to ride!

I have found that, 93oct, S/C, and cold air are a wonderful mix with the VX. The cool, denser air is Mother Nature's intercooler for the S/C in some regards, heh.

Wish my STi could benefit other than having an intercooler that get's Mother Nature's cold breath cooling it. Sure beats summer heatsink.
