Without looking at it, I assume it's a simple ground/wire that sends some signal to the shifter button so I can shift out of park.
I'm having problems with this releasing at start up, sometime I have to hit the break pedal 3 or 4 times before I can push the shift button in. Any suggestions? I'm out to investigate right now, maybe some help from any one who's experienced this before.

I found a few threads. It seems it's a magnet that may be dirty, or the wire that's kinked somewhere. I'll report back soon.

Someone just went through this relatively recently, but it is a little solenoid switch that allows the shifter to move when the brake pedal is pressed. When the radio is off I can actually hear mine clicking when I hit the brake pedal. I'll do a search, but hopefully someone will chime in soon.
*edit* - nevermind, looks like you've got it under control.

Wierd but mines does not need the brake to shift into gear but will not shift if the key is removed from ignition. Hmmm

I made this video earlier this year to help those with this same issue.
Hope it helps you too... :)
