I decided to take the VX out on a drive during the fantastic weather CO had this past Saturday. We went the back way from Denver down to Colorado Springs. From Sedalia I took 67 all the way down. The plan was to take rampart range road, but it was closed. On the way down I stopped by rainbow falls park, somewhere I hadn't been in years since I haven't had a 4x4 in so long. I used to go down there with a pair of ATV's and cruise through all the trails and stare at the backside of beautiful Pike's Peak. Instead, I got the treat of experiencing how capable the VX is off road. Aside from the Polaris, which had 4x4, the only other vehicles I've done this with was a stock XJ, and two 86 Troopers.
At first I was timid and stuck to the main trail, it was bumpy enough and had plenty of deep ruts from the dirt bike runs. I passed by some lifted Jeeps crawling up a little pit of rocks. I got some smiles and maybe one or two odd looks as I stopped to watch them do their thing. I think the minimum lift I saw was 4", and an FJ popped up that had to be 2' up, it looked hideous.
After I started to head out of rainbow falls I took a detour up an ATV trail. One that I had been on many times, but only in an ATV. The VX handled incredibly. I kept turning to my wife and saying, "I love this truck, I can't believe it's doing this." And never did I put it in 4x4 low, just high and every now and then I put it in L so I could go really slow.
So ... I never planned on off roading with this, but now I'm hooked again and remember why I wanted one in the first place (beside how awesome they look). I'm hunting now for a new trail, hopefully one that's open close to Denver. Thinking Mt Herman by Monument, and maybe trying some of the easy parts of Moab hill.
A couple images, no action shots tho :(
