It's unbelievable how much quieter these are compared to the Wrangler MTs I had on it. I decided to go with ATs since 'Boy' is driving it to school right now. These behave much better on pavement. I'll go back to MTs in a year or 2 maybe even Super Swampers:drool:

I need to try to get a weight difference before I ditch the last Wrangler.

Firestone Destination A/T

33x12.50R15 (same as the Wranglers)

I still get a slight rub at full lock in reverse. Time to get out the BFH.

Dang. If I had to pick tire to please all Y'all it would've been 31x10.50R15. I would've had to change it's name to the Whimpmobile.

BTW, the shiney is gone from the tires. I made Boy wash it & he put Armorall on the tires;puke:

Very nice choice of new shoes, Tom. The F-Stones Desti's are a top-notch and well designed A/T tire with a center rib tread pattern for smooth highway cruising.

However: once you get used to the more refined and quiet ride of the AT's, I doubt you'll ever go back to the noisy and bumpy riding MT's. I had experienced the same thing 30 years ago with the BFG M/T's on my FJ-40 as they constantly rattled my teeth loose down the road. I then later switched to the BFG A/T's on my FJ-40, and swore I'd never go back to any kind of M/T on my vehicles ever again (and I didn't).

Your Proton looks great with the new shoes, Tom!!! Congrats.

I'm surprised you don't get pulled over by the cops.... out here, you would get ticketed for not having flares/mud guards wide enough to block stuff being thrown back at motorists behind you.

Looks like you had to modify the front cladding wheel openings? Just curious. ("Looks tough", though.) Thx

We'll see ... it's kinda like a 'compensating thang'.:)

I'm surprised you don't get pulled over by the cops...

Only once ... & he finally admitted that he just wanted to talk to me about the VX (no, he didn't ticket me - even though he pulled me over for dead tags ... don't ask). Actually, I don't think that in VA an officer can pull you over for that but he can ticket you for it if he pulls you over for another infraction.

Understooded. Just had to resurrect the 'gorilly feets' thang. Hadn't been mentioned in months.:)

Yup, significant trimming done by PO. I've done a little more & still need to perform a little 'plastic deformation' on the inner wells. I also replaced most of the hex heads with pan heads in the danger zones.

GTK. I was hoping for tires that would last. Even if/when I go back to MTs, I'll put these on different rims for towing the VX behind the RV.

Those tires look pretty good for ATs. Next time get 14.50 wide mud tires so they actually fit you wide arse rims :biggringr:biggringr

:hj:Tom did you "convert" yours like Travellin2 did so it can be towed?

IIRC those tires rank really really high on TireRack's user survery site.

Sue,

I bought the mod pieces from Travelin2. I haven't installed them yet. Hope to get to it this weekend. Still need to purchase the towbar & figure out the best mounting scheme. I'm starting to lean towards using the front hook mounting holes rather than going through the front cladding.

Awesome, lucky you! That was quite a set up!

Yup, I'm the luckiest man I know.

A few of his trinkets will take time to duplicate but I'll get there eventually. In particular, I'm thinking of the safety brake feature where the towed vehicle brakes are applied if it ever breaks loose from the tow vehicle. That's a must eventually but for now I'll just have to rely on safety chains.

BTW, those are gone now. They didn't hold up very well & were coming apart. I'm back to nekkid seats now.

My brother has those tires (in a slightly smaller size) on his Xterra and he loves them. Quiet on the highway and work well in the snow.

I have to agree with Jon. Those tires look too narrow for your rims. They just don't look as wide as the MTs, regardless of the size molded into the sidewall. Did you have to opportunity to measure the actual rim width, or look for manufacturer markings while you had the tires off?

tom4bren
04/25/2011, 03:41 AM
Nope, but I still gotta order the spare (they only had 4 in stock). I'll try to remember to get the measurements during the process.
