The VX is still not 100%...
Electrical gremlins are causing minor troubles. The key fobs don't work and the dome light keeps going on randomly (we had to pull the bulb to keep from going insane). St. Charles put new door switches in, but that did not fix it.

Also, the fuse for the dash lights and tail lights keeps blowing... gotta have a shop (or the guys at the stoop) look into what is causing this.

Other than that, the trip has been great. Halfway to St. Louis, we had a dual-trailer big rig flashing his lights at us so we pulled over to see what the problem was. Turned out to be a cousin of mine that couldn't believe the Nocturnal VX was blowing by him in the middle of the night on a run he has done daily for over two decades! Seeing Merlin was fun, and everyone at St. Charles Automotive was great. Even though all the issues with the VX were not resolved, they did a lot in one day.

See y'all soon!

Yesterday the earlybird group took a little jaunt through the Dome Plateau trail. Nothimg too adventurous but a fun trip. Only damage came early on...to my lip! The wind blew my door shut as I was exiting the VX and the corner put a nice gash in just below my lip...ouch. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the turn off on the trail to get to Again and Again Hill so we stuck to the main trail. Now it is time to figure out what todays adventure will be.

Todays trail "attempt" was short lived and there was carnage! A group of 7 vehicles set out to conquer Cliff Hanger. We made it as far as the entrance obstacle with 5 vehicles at the bottom Mikes Trooper hit hard going down and blew a radiator hose. In an attempt to get him back up the obstacle Jack (PBKid) attempted to take a different line up to strap Mike...PB came down HARD on a rock smashing his shiney new skidplate skyward into his radiator and crushing/relocating it. Now we had 2 vehicles stuck in the middle of the obstacle. With a bit winch work we got Craig to the the top in his Trooper. We were then able to assist Mike and Jack up. We then got everyone else to the top and our day was done. I towed Jack back to the Red Rock, we got his old radiator out, new radiator will be here in the morning. Mike got his new hose in. New day tomorrow.

My pics will have to wait until I get home...no plave at Pack Creek to power my 'puter...sorry guys!

Wow! Glad I went on the La Sal run today. No carnage on our run but it was also short lived. Got turned back by a felled tree and large snow feild. I have an axe so we cleared the tree for others but weren't going to make it through the snow. We tried the bypass route but the water was flowing too high for stream crossing.

Here are a few pics. All my pics can be seen at http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c337/Gizmo420/Moab%20ZuZoo%20XIV%202011/

Yesterday Todd led a group of 25 vehicles (19 VX's) for the VX run on 7 mile rim. Very scenic trail with a few places to play and a few high speed area's where I may have gotten a little air time ;) No carnage to be had...though a few of us tried!
Today the almighty Zeus led a small group of us through Hells Revenge in the rain...slick rock can be quite slick when wet. Was quite the fun time. Tip over challenge is like ice when wet. I smoked the tires trying to get even the slightest amount of traction but it just wasn't happening...but it was quite entertaining. Afterwards a few of us went over and made quick work out of Baby Lions Back.
One more day for me :(

OK, here's a gazillion pics....had to take all pics myself this year as my camera assistant was not in attendance....., so many are taken through the windshield, blindly sticking the camera out the window, and many are taken of the truck in front or back of me while on the trail. These are the three trails I was on:

The first trail pics are from La Sal Mountain, has lots of trees, very rocky trails and lots of snow in the upper elevation. There was a felled tree blocking out path, so several guys played lumberjack and chopped it and dragged it out of the way, only to find snow that was too deep to continue in.

The 2nd trail is Seven Mile Rim....very classic orange desert with huge monoliths. Just amazing views.

The 3rd trail is when I was a rider with Travis (tjh) on Poison Spider in his Dragon....it has extreme orange rock ledges and walls to climb/descend, many larger rock obstacles and with a good deal of rain to really make the slick rock slicker! Travis was like Spiderman again this year, just awesome! He made short work of all the obstacles, went up, down, through. He really knows how to work the gearing and the e-brake to maximize traction. It was awesome to see!

Poison Spider also has some sand dunes so everybody had a great time blasting around that dune and getting the sand to fly!

Lots and lots of good fun was had on "the stoop". Terrific group again this year and we all had a great time. We had a pretty big group from the this forum including.....me, LDub, VX Crazy, Orion, Jay Dunford, Big Jim, Craig, tjh, MSHardeman, Zu4Two, SpaceCADETzoom, JoFotoz, Scott Harness, pbkid, NocturnalVX, VXIronWoman, mhill, Kodiak, Gizmo42, Triathlete, Todd & Linda Adams, Big Swede, MeowMix, WooHuu, Jack's Dad Brad, his sister Diane and girlfriend Whitney, Kodiak's sister, TLMP, Big G, Little G, several Trooper, Amigo and Rodeo owners I can't recall names. I'm sure I forgot somebody, so please add to this list.

It rained on and off for a few days but we still had a great time. This group has some really colorful characters and really kept the fun going......For some reason Lisa wanted to put my little purple VX in her mouth....:goof:.....and Jo says it's going in the calendar for next year! :_thinking

It's really an amazing experience and I highly recommend you try to attend at last once, even if just as a rider, it's well worth it and truly a great life experience. And the majestic physical beauty of the area is beyond description!

Crotchrocket we saved a sticker for you...forget who has it, but I'm sure you'll get it.

So plan on at least 15 mins to scroll through these pics.....particularly the ones of Seven Mile Rim and Poison Spider!
Sit back and Enjoy!

I've added many names to the pics.

Back home again and tired. I caught up with Dub, Pat, and Jim just outside of Delta (by Grand Junction) so we all stopped for Wendys and fuel.

I uploaded some more pics to photobucket a few days ago but haven't posted them yet. I'll get all mine uploaded and some posts sometime this week.

Billy, another great shot of the Rodeo, LOVE IT!

Poked around under the rodeo when I got home looking for the source of the annoying new rattle. Didnt find it but found out I've had a fuel line leak for a while. Think the clamp just wasnt tight enough. Now I know why I could smell fuel sometimes after stopping. Thought it was my gas cans venting.

We are home safe, and are really missing everyone. Had a great time even though the weather wasn't so great. Just wanted to say that it is always a pleasure being with all y'all. We really need to get that VX commune going... We are in the process of uploading all the photos and videos, and will post links shortly. Can't wait for next year, but I hope to see some of you before then.

I know a lot of the forum members look forward to all the pics and stories (carnage and all), but please don't hope for mishaps. When we got back from the trail on Friday, Mike's VX was one of 3 Isuzus that needed major work. There was some minor carnage to others during the week, and Jack had a major whack to his front end and needed to replace his radiator. We go out of our way to have fun without ruining our rides, but sometimes accidents happen. Please don't send negative mojo our way. Thank you.

Mike busted up what we think could be his transfer case trying a ledge on Gold Bar Rim using TOD instead of 4 Low. I tried the same obstacle a few times and promptly gave up. While on the incline, he put it into 4 Low, which may be what resulted in him not being able to move at all, until the front and rear drive shafts were disconnected. Gill towed him into town.

Oh, man, you left right before all the bad juju. A way home all worked out for everyone in the end, but yeesh.

MOAB 2011 pictures (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v299/spaceCADETzoom/moab%202011/) They're chronological, but I think I'm missing Dome Plateau (sunday). Starts off with Top of The World (Monday, after the aborted Cliff Hanger), Seven Mile Rim (Tuesday), Hell's Revenge (Wednesday), Arches hiking and Tower Arch/Klondike Bluffs (Thursday), Canyonlands/north up Lockhart Basin (don't think we quite made it to Hurrah Pass) (Friday), Kane Creek Canyon (Saturday).

Sorry a lot of silver VX shots...:) Or white first gen Trooper--it was just Mike (and Rachel) and me that set out on a couple of those trails. And even the group ones, it's hard to take pictures of anyone but the trucks immediately in front, or maybe behind you.

Yeah, that really sucked... However, we towed him to the stoop (nobody gets left behind) and he made arrangements for his brother to come to Moab with a trailer to get him home. We have a great group of people, and the convoy back to town with everyone's hazard lights blinking was a proud moment. I for one am going to be passing on a lot of the optional stuff from now on. Even the regular trails are getting harder, and I may be sticking to the slickrock and scenic trails... just going to Moab is great enough. Hanging out with everybody at the stoop & in town is a great time.

Tried uploading a few vids... failed.

Well, when it comes to breakage I think it comes down to sometimes #2 happens. As you know, I pretty much beat mine within its limits and have yet to break anything. If you pick a smart line, stay off the skinny pedal (except when needed) and know the limitations of your vehicles set up everything will go okay. If anything does break then there were probably some underlying circumstances.
Don't want to scare everyone away from experiencing the wonders of the best trails anywhere....besides, I think you would tire of running F'n'T and Hells Revenge over and over again.:yesy::bwgy: A nd both of those are rated just as hard as anything else we run out there, meaning they offer just as much potentiel for #2 to happen as any of the others.

I'm definitely going easy on my VX from here on out as well. Moab is great fun, but there is always the potential to thrash something. If everything falls into place, my VX is going to be looking brand new in the next few months, and I plan to keep it that way!!

Now that I have seen the carnage list, I want details!! How did Mike break his xfer case?

Hey everyone,

Wish I could have made it up sooner, darn work always getting in the way of fun. Plus I had a fuel leak I couldn't find after a week. So Friday night I got serious finally found it behind the engine high pressure side, disassemble the EGR stuff and got it fixed. Was thinking that all that was replaced when I rebuilt the motor so it couldn't be there, wrong again.

Anyway, had an incredible time! Met some terrific people at the Stoop. Got some great advice on what trails to take and which to stay away from, BIG thanks to Gill, Cece and Bob. Stock VX besides the supercharger, like the sports car handling what else can I say. Got the Wells trail book and that was a great help. Saturday morning went on Hell's revenge and thinking why is this rated difficult ? till I got to the last mile of 6.5. But made it through and went on another moderate, "service road" trail that had a lot of great scenery. Did more playing on Sunday, don't remember where we ended up but had a great time and didn't do any damage besides a little paint from the skid plates..

Just wanted to thank all the people that helped get us off to a great start. Highly recommend it to everyone to go at least once, you can't go just once you will be back I know I will. Hopefully I can get there earlier and join the crowd next year.

He was trying to climb an optional line near the end of Gold Bar Rim that I had just seen a couple jeeps try and fail. He started out in 4 hi (TOD) for whatever reason then switched to 4 lo. I doubt that switching is what caused it, it was the additional torque of the low range more likely. I never knew the TOD cases were chain driven. Think thats what popped. Cece has video of when it happened. You can hear it pop, it was loud. I thought for sure it was a CV since it sounded exactly like one.

Dan, what gives Hells Revenge it's high rating is it's optional stuff...Hells Gate, Tipover Challenge, the Hot Tubs, and Escalator...plus the end and the long steep climbs/descents throughout. Though, with the right lines, we have gotten many stock VX's through it unharmed.

It'll probably remain this way for a while...the unpacking, cleaning, etc, of the camping gear, not to mention the actual car...It's way too intimidating to start while I'm still on vacation.

...plus I gotta find that heat gun somewhere in the unpacked tool boxes in the garage. And does anyone know if the gas tank skid plate is easy to remove? I think I want to bang it back out.

Poked around under the rodeo when I got home looking for the source of the annoying new rattle. Didnt find it
Better keep looking...I had a front drivers side rattle on Metal Masher on Friday, thought I fixed it when I found the loose diff bracket axle bolts, but no...went to change a leaking tire last night in the parking lot of the North Platte, Nebraska Taco John's and found that 2 of 3 nuts on the drivers side upper ball joint were missing! One bolt/nut was intact, one bolt was still there, loose, and one bolt/nut was gone entirely. That could have been ugly at 75 mph!

Moral: If you are out shaking the bejeezus out of your vehicle on wheeling trails (and Gemini Bridges Road), chances are you loosened some fasteners... check 'em!

Oh, and I got home OK, stayed in North Platte and this morning I got some new bolts etc and got the UBJ secured...

First thanks for the condolences and positive mojo coming my way! I tore into it as soon as I got home so have not been able to check the site for a few days.
Now I am the newbie so I take no offense to you all laughing and learning from my mistakes (they are numerous and significant!)

So... I was doing something I should not have been doing in 4H. We had finished all the demanding stuff on the trail and I switched out of 4L to have some fun Kirks way! (For those who have not been out with him he likes to floor the gas every chance he gets!) We came across an obstacle and those famous last words came out of my mouth..."I can do that" :yesgray: I tore into it and forgot to switch back to 4L :( I had the front wheels up when I switched to 4L. Should have backed down put it in 4L and started again. I was deep into the gas pedal when I am guessing the 4L actually engaged and it engaged with a BANG! Literally. It was getting late so Dave and I wasted no time tearing off my skid plates (freshly painted :smilewink) and disconnecting the drive shafts. Gil and Cece were life savers and towed me back to the stoop. This is where the great meeting of the minds took place :rollb2: Because the grinding, popping and jerking stopped when we disconnected the drive shafts the problem must be transfer case! Getting home Sunday was a must for work so I made a call to my big bro who came through with his diesel truck and a trailer. Made it home with no problems. Dove in head first tearing my beautiful VX apart top to bottom and actually got the transfer case out in about 6 or 7 hours. Not bad considering I had no idea what I was doing. I set it on the bench and spun the flanges which connect to the drive shafts and.... it was smooth as silk! WHAT THE!! I made a few calls to a mechanic friend who offered to come over and take a look. While waiting I decided to check the differentials. Opened the drain plug on the rear put a magnet in...all good. Got under the front put the magnet in and...metal bits, pieces, parts everywhere  Yep took the whole transfer case out and it was the front diff that gave out.

So now its a race to find a new front diff. Oh yeah and put the transfer case back in! :)

It was great getting to know everyone on the stoop and on the trail.
Thanks to Gil Cece Dave Mark Joe Dub Jack Steve Mike Craig and everyone else who helped get my VX home in almost one piece.

I had a great time! I will fix it and be back next year. For the stoop and the sticker!

Yeah, the 4.77s gears came in Trooper RSes and I think some Amigos. Basically, it would be a gearing upgrade for your VX, however the 4.77s are "open", which means no LSD (limited slip) in the rear. Right now, you have an open front diff and a LSD rear diff. If you found 4.77s and installed them striaght, you would have open diffs in front and in the rear. BUT, you could install an Aussie lunchbox locker then, and you would have MAD traction in the rear. :happyface

I know, I know, when I bought my VX I had no idea what any of this meant either, but once you dig in, it gets addictive. Read this, it will help make sense out of what your diffs do, and why they are called "differentials".

The compressor, extension cord, gun case, air gauge, 5 qts oil, rags, knife, extra water/soda & food and a bunch of other stuff....all so handy and contained. Highly recommend these boxes!

Even on the roughest up/down bump type obstacle, the boxes barely moved out of place. After several slams up and down, they moved about 6" forward. Going to put some velcro on the bottom for next time, then they won't move at all.

Wow Mike, you did a good job. That diff is made out of some pretty stout stuff so to put a crack in it like that took some doing.

On the "bright" side, at least it's the front diff ($) and not the transfer case ($$$). Good luck getting your girl back together and let us know if we can help in any way.

Wow, wouldnt have thought it was the diff. Guess we will all know for next time if it happens again. I thought for sure it was the t-case. Glad to know even with the chain drive they are apparently stronger then the diff. Would have thought cv's would be snapping before the diff did though.

If I knew it was the front diff instead of t-case we could have easily gotten you home in rear wheel drive. Just leave the front shaft disconnected and pull the front flanges for the cv's. Swap on some manual hubs if we had to.

Bart

05/24/2011, 03:31 PM
Mike, while you have the front end out for repairs it would be a good time to have your front diff brackets modified to drop your diff a bit to relieve the angles on your cv's. Also from the damage to the case I would be willing to bet that there may have been a pre-existing problem in there...as Bart was referencing to earlier, maybe that crack was there and you had been running with it dry or near dry.

nfpgasmask
05/24/2011, 03:43 PM
Either that or his diff was seeping at the axle seal (like mine has been doing for the last 3 years) and he ran the front fluid low....that's what I would think. I just can't see how this would happen without breaking the CVs first. The gears must have been binding due to low/old lube in the diff.

haha go menace!!!!

btw- for everyone who was there when i busted my radiator, ive been doing some research in the last couple of days and it looks like the radiator is a common issue for 3rd gen runners who wheel. I think that trail gear makes a new radiator that fits much better, i just might be picking that up :)

Ya know, I was too engrossed in trying to put my radiator back where it belongs to watch your attempts at Rock Chucker...just needed more skinny pedal I'm guessing :winko: that's what worked for me, and is why I sheered off my front tow hook in the process.

And to think I did it with only one bolt in my drivers side upper ball joint...;eekb;

Yes, the plate will either be significantly upgraded or reinforced. We shall see what financials bring, and how the plans for the Runner pan out. If i get my christmas wishes i may have to completely restart the skid plate (hint hint)

Slickrock isnt bad in the rain. The bad part is the wet sand sticking to your tires between slick rock sections. But if you get on a spot with lots of tire marks (like TOC) it becomes super slick.

I was surprised how little the rain affected the slick rock, keep in mind it wasn't a deluge....but like Dave said, it was the wet sand on the tires causing slipping. But after a little burning off, the tires gripped and up you went.
Down....was a little slicker, but not that much.

HAHAHA! JERK! :p I hope you at least listened to our synchronous message!

I trailered my Jeep down there - much cheaper than renting. It did great and climbed over everything I tried except for Rock Chucker (driver error most likely) and a spot on Steel Bender where I lifted both driver side tires twice. I think Jack was trying to make me roll over. :p
No matter; it's time to sell it so I can get back to the Blazer! I am so amped to show up with THAT next year... so no excuses, you and Linda better be getting your collective arses to Moab next year!

buy the steel, welding wire (cheap) and pitch some money for argon and I'll be happy to help you start building a new rear bumper.

(you'd have to come down to my parents, but it'd save you hundreds compared to a shop)... they live down by monument, co.

I should be done with mine soon enough and I'd be happy to help you out if you wanted to buy the materials.

I may have to take you up on that :yesy: I want one styled like the ones Joe Darlington makes. He's in north carolina so just the shipping cost alone could be a killer for a heavy bumper.

http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/albums/album09/unf_oct_05_28.jpg

For the front I can just go with an ARB. Joe D and Indy4x are the only ones that make rear ones though and they are all custom hand made so not all that cheap.

Mark you gotz such a cute little photobucket name there! Hahahaha!

Billy, my second car (and by far my favorite....maybe even more so than the VX) was a 1956 Volkswagen bug that was painted a bright candy red. Since it looked like a big red bump I called it Bugbite and got a license plate to match. All the way through high school and college I was know as Bugbite because of that car.

Good times, good times.....

Dave, until you said something about that in Moab it had never struck me that my screen name could be interpreted that way. I should change that.....

Any updates on all the broken front diffs?

I know the yard I was at this weekend had a few TOD troopers with front diff intact. They charge $60 for a 3rd member (have to pull it yourself). The pinion flange from rodeo 3rd members would have to be changed to work in a VX since yours have a cv drive shaft attached by 6 bolts and non-TOD isuzus have regular u-joint shafts attached with 4 bolts. Pretty sure any TOD trooper (availabe '98+) 3rd member would be the same as a VX one as long as the gear ratio matched.

mhill
06/03/2011, 09:34 AM
Hey Dave, I figured now was a good time to get that 3rd member with Aussie locker from independent4x. Also going to put the Warn premium hubs on. I will loose the TOD but dont need that too often on the sunny streets in Phoenix! For now the VX sits dormant in the garage still covered in Moab mud! :smilewink
