I have seen a couple post showing that an Acura 3.5L will bolt up to the TOD set up. First off......is this true. Secondly.....what would be the benifits?? What kind of specs does the acura have?? (HP & TQ)?? Honestly the only reason i'm asking is because they seem to be quite a bit cheeper. Do you know if our accessories will fit as well?

The "Acura SLX" was a lightly upgraded and re-badged Isuzu Trooper sold by the Acura division of Honda from 1995 to 1999. From 1998 it had the same 3.5L 215 hp engine as the VX.
I don't know if it would mate cleanly to the TOD. The primary benefit would be another source of engines. The engines from that period are thought to be somewhat prone to failure.

Thats what i was curious about was the bolting. some of the newer 3.5 Acura motors boast 300HP which would be rediculously nice in the little VX. If they bolt the same then everything else should be able to overcame even if it required using the Acura harness/computer/accessories. I found one with 47k miles on it for $1400 and that was with the 300HP!!!

I beleive the newer 3.5L Accura motors are an different Honda design.
Honda had a J series Single Overhead Cam 3.5L 60 degree V6 of a design different than the Isuzu engine.

I was afraid that might be the case!!! Thanks for the help though.

Once i overheard that acura's MDX engine was built at an isuzu's plant by honda's design & specifications.
I have no idea if that engine is compatible, but if it does you also have to swap the VX's transmission because it can handle up to 285 lbs of torque.
The 2001 oldsmobile aurora V-8 4.0L with 250hp is the best bet when it comes to looking into swapping engines because of its similarity with our V-6.
It fits almost perfectly except that you'll need to do some work with the tranmission's housing bolts

I've thought about the Aurora 4.0 as well. what type of modifications to the bolts would be needed? As far as only handling 285 ftlbs, i dont know the specs on the acura motor other than the 300 HP. I would guess its close to the 285 ftlbs but would doubt if it was over that. Just curious if you had the info in the torque. I ddn't see it.

In regards of the aurora engine i think one or few of the transmission's housing bolts would need a slight relocation mod in order to fit properly.
Here are both, the VX & the 2005-2011 MDX engine-drivetrain specs
Vehicross : V6 3.5L DOHC 215hp @ 5,400rpm torque 230ft-lbs @ 3,000rpm
2011 MDX : V6 3.7L SOHC 300hp @ 6,300rpm torque 270ft-lbs @ 4,500rpm 2005 MDX : V6 3.5L SOHC 265hp @ 5,800rpm torque 253ft-lbs @ 3,500rpm
As you can see the 2005 acura seems to be better suit for our VX then the 2011 in regards of power

I agree but it doesn't seem like the 3.7 would be out of range for the VX either. interesting!!! do you know if either one would be a direct bolt on to our tranny? even with the 05 its almost 25% more power!! Thats a chunk!!:yesb:

A grand for 50hp is pretty hard to swallow. If you just want another 50hp get a cheap nitrous kit and a FMU set up. Shouldn't be impossible.

Yes 300hp couldn't be bad at all,but our tranny can't handle that amount of power.
Is more likely that our tranny might not be a direct bolt to the acura's engine.
Our tranny which was designed by GM (4L30E ) was discontinued in the early 2000's for the more efficient and reliable 5-speed 5L40-E/5L50 tranny that is not suitable for our VX although is almost identical. Our tranny is very old,all the way from the early 90's according to GM's public data.
Our tranny was 1rst used in the 1991 BMW 525-i series and last used in the 2001 trooper,Vehicross and honda passport/isuzu rodeo V6
Is a fact that if you want more power you'll have to do a entire swap ( engine & tranny ) including electronics, wiring, fuel system,ECU,etc.
With a good sack of $$ any thing is possible speaking of :winky:
I have no idea is the 4L30-E tranny is a direct bolt to the acura's engine.Need to do some research

sounds like anything over the 250hp range would require a complete powertrain swap...........Things that make you go HMMMMMM...
guess I really need to find out if its possible to swap the 05 Acura motor or go with the Aurora V8. I actually really like the sound of the V8 in the VX:happyface

What about the LS1 guys that still use the 4L30E and push closer to 300hp? You can find this one FBody forums. What is the maximum threshold of hp? I have a 3800LS1 Firebird as well.

I was thinking about an engine swap when and if the time comes. Really dont want the issues some NOS kit cause with the pistons and what not.

Why not, why makes it incompatible?

Bolt and housing design/locations are different.

Jharris1385 !
The main issue is torque. Our tranny can't handle more then 285hp,but my mech clearly told me that he wouldn't suggest any engine pushing over 270 because is more likely the tranny to go boom

I beleive the 4L30E is used inthe aveo still.
J are you sure its not the 4L60E those guys are using?

Find a real mechanic that can morph your tranny into one that'll handle that much.

Gussie2000 off topic but on the tod case the front and rear speed sensors are they wired together or do they have seperate connections?
So would I have to replace both or can I just replace one.
when I am looking at them they look like they are together? What am I doing wrong?

If anyone knows where to this info please let me know I cant find it. Also I am trying to find out what part everyone is talking about that is located on the front axle that you have to take off and clean out. They say that it look like a electric valve?
Thank you

You won't find that on the stock front axle of the VX.
Only on Troopers etc, & their Honda/Acura counterparts that had TOD + 2wd-HI.

I just kinda skipped though this... but has anyone popped the hood on any honda/acura in the past ten years? sideways motors... they are all FWD design, will not bolt up to our transmission. the Aurora is also a FWD car, even though it is a V8, it would need custom exhaust manifolds most likely. what about a good ol' 4L60E, aren't they just beefed up versions of the 4L30E? I'm not too up on my GM transmission history, but I do know a little about a hondas... I also saw somewhere else on this forum something about the H3 manual transmission bolting to our engine, but the transfer case would have come too, and a custom drive shaft set up. If y'all are going through the trouble of swapping this stuff out, go with the Gm 5 cyl, it makes like 245hp right? and the trans can handle much more.

I, too, just stepped into this thread. I wish I would have seen this sooner. You are incorrect about the engines, though. The '96-'04 Acura RL motor is not sideways. Seeing as I had one sitting in my garage as well as a AR5 tranny, had I seen this, I would have been able to give some better feedback. I was motor swapping a 3.5 into my Acura Legend coupe, (which is becoming more commonplace nowadays), and was about 75% done w/a (anticiapted) 500hp Rotrex-s/c build until I purchased an M3 and parted the Legend.

does any 4L30E no matter what car in comes out of fit my 1999 VX? I problebly just lost my transmission when my intercooler blew, losing my fluid, with little warning, I drove about 3 miles, little fluid was left in sump, dropping pans in the morning; bet it's a mess; lots of 4L30E tranny's within a 100 miles of Cincy priced from $300 to $650; most all from Tropper II's, will my shop have any problem matting it to my VX? going for lowest millage, longest warranty, it's a gamble from a yard but it's 2012, what choice do I have, must save my VX!
