View Full Version : VX low/no idle on startup

On my way to work this morning my VX took a few more revs than usual to start but when it did it ran smooth but would die immediately unless i held the gas down to bring the idle up. It took a 5 minutes of attempts of starting it before it idled on its own as normal. Im just afraid its going to leave me stranded somewhere or just die out while waiting at a light.
I read some threads on here about the MAF, PCV, IAC, Fuel filter, EGR, FPR, intake manifold leak, or cam/crank sensors may be the culprit. A lot of the threads were saying they had a high idle problem though. Mine was the opposite. I was just wondering if anyone had this happen to them and what the fix was. Since it started up fine right after words I would think that its not a manifold leak or fuel filter problem because its been fine all day since. Today I bought a new Fuel pressure reg, I just have to find the time to install... Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Any local auto parts stores where you could have your VX checked for potential ECU trouble codes?
If the ECU had trouble codes to report then the CEL (check engine light on the dashboard) would be on.
That assumes that the CEL light bulb itself has not burned out and its a safe assumption that it has not.
That said, we limit the search to idle problems that will not typically throw a ECU code.
By all means get your codes read by anyone with a code reader, most auto parts chain stores will do this for free, but OBDII codes are not a bible.
Seems to me you have an erratic idle problem or an intermittent idle problem.
From your original post it seems you have already read up on VX idle probs, so my suggestion is to focus on causes that do not throw ECU codes if indeed your CEL is not on.

When the key is on it shows the "check" light bulb is ok. But its not lit when its running so it looks like no codes are logged. I'll see if a friend of mine might have a code reader anyways. Its been running great except for the one time this morning trying to start it for 5 minutes... Thanks

If your bulb is out then it might be your MAF sensor. Mine was doing that over the summer and I replaced it and haven't seen my CEL anymore. Idles perfectly

I'd do the IAC first. It's cheap and easy. Since you have the FPR already, go ahead and knock that out too. Then wait and see if it comes back.

So I changed out the FPR and fuel filter. No change, the startup was really low idle in the morning and when I left work the idle was really high, stayed around 2,000. I drove it home and took out the IAC and cleaned all the carbon build up in it. So far so good! Hopefully this did the trick otherwise ill replace this next.
It looks like it was the IAC. :yesy:

I just had a similar problem. It was my EGR valve. New one cost me $120. Took 5 mins to put it on. The only difference is that even though the idle was very low and rattling, and it took a few tries to get it started, it never actually died completely while stopped at a light.

I had the same thing happen. Cleaned the IAC and it's been good for 3 yrs now!

Where is the IAC located? I have the idle issue.

IAC is the culprit I'd guess. $50.00 to replace. Takes five minutes.

Mine was doin' that intermittantly every other month, then monthly, then weekly, then the CEL finally came on when it did it again. Cleaned EGR & idle air control. It was totally carbon'd out. Could feel it sticking. No problem after 2 years.

Download the Isuzu Workshop manual- it's got all the schematics so it's a great resource.
