Summary:
ISUZU IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998-2002 ISUZU RODEO AND MODEL YEAR 2002 ISUZU AXIOM VEHICLES, AND HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN 1998-2002 HONDA PASSPORT VEHICLES, THAT WERE ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR ARE CURRENTLY REGISTERED, IN THE STATES OF MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, VERMONT, MASSACHUSETTS, RHODE ISLAND, CONNECTICUT, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, DELAWARE, MARYLAND, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WEST VIRGINIA, OHIO, INDIANA, MICHIGAN, ILLINOIS, WISCONSIN, MINNESOTA, IOWA, MISSOURI, AND KENTUCKY. VEHICLES THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED SUSTAINED EXPOSURE TO HIGHLY CORROSIVE MATERIALS USED IN SOME JURISDICTIONS FOR ROAD DEICING PURPOSES MAY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE VICINITY OF THE FORWARD MOUNTING POINT BRACKET FOR THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK PRIOR TO THE TIME THAT SUCH CORROSION WOULD NORMALLY BE EXPECTED.

Consequence:
EXCESSIVE CORROSION MAY RESULT IN THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET BECOMING DETACHED FROM THE FRAME, WHICH CAN AFFECT VEHICLE HANDLING AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AREA. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH LITTLE OR NO CORROSION IS FOUND, THE AREA WILL BE TREATED WITH AN ANTI-CORROSIVE COMPOUND. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH CORROSION HAS DAMAGED THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AND AFFECTED ITS CONNECTION TO THE VEHICLE FRAME, A REINFORCEMENT BRACKET WILL BE INSTALLED. IN THE RARE EVENT THE CORROSION IS SO SEVERE THAT THE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET REMEDY WOULD NOT BE APPROPRIATE, A REPURCHASE OFFER WILL BE EXTENDED TO THE VEHICLE'S OWNER. ALL INSPECTIONS AND REMEDIES WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE FOR VEHICLES THAT ARE 10 YEARS OLD OR LESS. FOR VEHICLES OLDER THAN 10 YEARS, ISUZU WILL OFFER A FREE REMEDY, BUT ONLY IF THE VEHICLE IS PRESENTED TO AN ISUZU SERVICE FACILITY, OR HONDA DEALER (AS APPLICABLE), DEALER WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF WHEN OWNER NOTIFICATIONS WERE ISSUED. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 10, 2010. ISUZU OWNERS MAY CONTACT ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727. HONDA OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.

I guess my question is why not the vx? why is it not an issue? or is it?

Possibly the VX was properly coated to prevent corrosion.

There's been plenty of discussion here and over at the Planet since this issue came to light in May 2010. The Rodeo and Passport were all made at the Subaru Plant in Indiana. Our VX was made in Japan. We have no such issue for whatever reason.

Our ever dependable VX remains as the only passenger vehicle ever sold in the US by Isuzu that has never had a recall. :yesy:

Hate to say this, but looks like Japan has a better auto assembly than the US auto workers.

But ...

This sounds suspiciously like Dub's waggly rear end issue.

Haha, yeah our VX's obviously have no rust issues. :)

I know how the TSB works, but since the VX was extreme limited quantity, does it even "qualify" for such service bulletins? I worked in various dealers but never worked on a car that released in such small quantities, so just curious. I know in the 10 years I have had my VX, I have never received a recall notice. Figured it was "just that damned good". :p

EDIT: NM. Caught it here.... http://www.tsbdata.com/tsb/2001-isuzu-truck-vehicross-4wd-v6-3_5l.html

I still have the benefit of going to an Isuzu dealership for service and I saw several of those recalls getting handled. The frame would just rust through. The fix seemed to be alright if the rust wasn't bad yet. If it was bad, they gave them money for the vehicle. I dont remember how much, but I believe the amount was quite nice. Better than private party sale.

My VX has never been in for any service recalls since I have owned it. Ever. Imagine it's due to the fact that my ISUZU dealership closed just after my purchase. A little hard for an empty building to send snail mail. It has since been bought and turned into one of the top Subaru/Hyundai dealerships in this region. No luck there.

Bummer, huh?

The severe rust was only a problem on each side of the frame at the lower link brackets. The rest of the frame was not affected.

That vehicle above probably qualifies for a buy-back from Isuzu.

If there was little or no rust, they cleaned it up and sprayed it so it would not be a problem in the future.

Our vehicles do not have any problems with rust at the lower link brackets. With all the time our many members spend under there, we would have seen a problem by now. Relax, and enjoy driving your Japanese made VX. :_steering

Not me.

Mine was caused by excessive acceleration/braking...:_steering

The holes were egg'd out, but no unusual amounts of corrosion.
