I am looking to find some software to be able to read and reprogram the ECU. Has anyone messed around with this at all? I am starting with my VehiCross but I also have a Mazda and a VW, so something that would work for all manufactures would be ideal. (typically you get what you pay for so I am not expecting to be able to find anything free..)

So why am I looking to go this route? There are other easier ways to find power. The big reason is that I am just looking to learn more about ECUs and how they work, as bonus hopefully ill pick up some ft/lbs and mpgs. :grinb:

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

I been around here a while, & to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever successfully messed with the stock ECU...:_confused

However, I have heard of those smarter than I, using aftermarket boxes with success...:_wrench:

Yeah, from what I have seen most stock ECUs can't be reprogrammed, but who knows. I'll check you that post, thanks for the link.

Some interesting stuff here (if you're good with a soldering iron) particularly the "digital fuel adjuster"

I believe Tone (or someone else?) had a protune done some time ago on a dyno, and soon after, the factory unit reverted back to OEM. Apparently, it has the capability to reset back to factory if it finds a change in programming. Some sort of fail-safe perhaps. This was some time ago that someone here had mentioned it (possibly even from the OLD forums) so maybe someone else who recalls that might ring in. Can't be 100% about the whole story though.

Check out this thread on the planet. This guy has a Trooper with an S/C 3.2L and had his ECU flashed by Jet. I'll ask him about the flash for you.

I wouldnt trust the JET ECU for many reasons. I had a small debate with the guy that has one on planetisuzoo about these things, and I still have yet to see proof the JET ECU made any gains.

I'd highly recommend trying out a piggyback system, something like the AEM FIC (fuel ignition controller). That will give you the best results.

Overall I am looking for software I can install on my laptop and use to read how the engine is doing and hopefully flash if necessary. It sounds like I will probably need to go the piggy back route but if not that would be great.

So far I haven't found power to be a problem, but I am kind of a newbie to the off road world. I daily drive the VX so some more mpgs would be great (seeing 12-15 right now)

I do this all the time with my Mitsubishi Evo and Subi STI. But these cars were made to do this too and have a huge backing of people to support it. I doubt its possible on this ECU.. I am thinking to do a stand alone ECU.

I searched on reflashing or tuning the original ECU for a while and never found anyone with any proof of it actually being altered. I only ever found some box from Aussieland that replaced the factory ECU and was damn expensive I believe. There are lots of stand alone systems that can most likely run our engines just fine. MegaSquirt is what I used to run my 85 SVO, works great and has great/easy user interface. Simple to understand tags within the system, all that jazz.
