A handful of us did an early run over the Lasal Pass. Unlike last year, we did NOT have to turn around half way due to excessive snow, though we did run into a pretty deep drift at one point. Only three of us managed to get through the drift without a strap or taking the bypass, all of which were Ebony VXes (Jerry aka arcobarco, Stephan aka ND92, and Gill aka nocturnalvx). Great scenery as always, and good times with no damage.
Oh yeah...link to the pics!!!

The group was split... The VX Run was on Fins N Things. Then some of us did Metal Masher instead; however we ended up leaving a little later than initially planned, so the Metal Masher group was split in two. Metal Masher was a new trail for Gill and I so we joined up with Jay Dunford (JoFotoz riding shotgun), Dumke, Meowmix, Kenny and wifey Donna, and Giggling Grammy. It was a great trip... not nearly as hairy as the name implied. I did take some videos, or so I thought...turns out there was some user error on my part so most of the "cool" stuff is just a memory. Womp...Womp...
Snow, Spiders, and Sand.:right: I wont mention the "carnage" word. That got me in trouble once before. :drool:Glad all is well!

Id love to conquer widowmaker one day, but I think its gonna be a while after watching that truggy flop on it last year...except I still dont understand who cruises around moab in a truggy with no tow strap ;wtf;
Fun trail in general though.

Dave said there were 15 vehicles, not all VXs, at the VX run. A small second group that missed the fins group headed out to Metal Masher...looked like 5-6 vehicles in that group, again not all VXs.

Here's a few pics to keep the wolves at bay. A small group of us went up La Sal Pass this afternoon which is a very easy trail - lots of rocks and bounces but no major obstacles. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the greatest so most of my pics are pretty washed out. Here's a few that were okay plus a couple shots of the VX.
At one of the higher points on the trail...

Ok so yesterday was a full day for part of our group. Steve and his co-pilot Joe, Jay, and Gill and I had a late start on our overnight journey of White Rim Trail in Canyonlands. Steve's Trooper had some issues I'm sure he'll post about later, but we started our trip around 3pm instead of 8am. We camped out under a mostly starry sky last night and returned back today. The pics are in the process of uploading and should be up shortly. But all I can say I this was one of my favorite trips of all time EVER!!!

How many miles did you guys cover Cece? I did that trail a few years back but didn't do all of White Rim and we covered about 100 miles. We did the part down to the Colorado, saw the arche, the Schafer switchbacks are awesome and then we came down to Long Canyon back to Moab. Was a long day. That pic with the vehicles along the rim is really cool. Where did you guys camp? I imagine the night sky was amazing :)

We did the whole White Rim Trail which covers about 90 miles. We started at Schafer switchbacks, went down past the Colorado River, Musselman Arch and Washer Woman Arch, camped at Gooseberry Campground (we had a few Kangaroo Rats as our guests), then continued today through the rest of the trail along the Green River. Excuse me while I go be social at the stoop...It's our last night here.

6 of us did TOP OF THE WORLD.....it was one H3!! of a climb and one hard fought battle! :freek:
Would be really rough for a stocker....I had a lot of e-brake action goin' on to get up many ledges, and skids, a lift, and preferably some sliders are most helpful and advised! :freek::freek: Man was it different than just 2 years ago....way rougher stuff but we ALL made it! YAH!
This trail has beautiful scenery and is well worth it.
Oh....and if you're wonderin'....my front & rear ....um....plastic skids were untouched....the Kilby's underneath....um...not so much! :laugho:

I'm guessing that is the point at which the POS rubber plug fell out of the drain hole of my transfer case...funny somebody got a pic of that. I was the tail gunner of the front group, so nobody saw the leak happening.
Of all the mods the PO did to my Trooper, stripping the threads of the t-case drain is the least favorite.

I don't have a lot of wheeling pics, but I'll post some scenery if nothing else. Apologies if my descriptions are redundant to anyone elses. I also grabbed a few photos from others where appropriate for narrative purposes, credit indicated under the photo.
On Sunday the 12th, Gill (NocturnalVX), CeCe (VXironwoman), Dave (Gizmo42), and my buddy Joe hiked to Corona Arch. Some of you may have seen the video of rock climbers swinging through the arch on a rope, well we got to see someone do it (CeCe wanted to do it in the worst way). Turned out it was a film crew for a Japanese singer called Becky. She was going to show up later in the day for a swing and they wanted to test it out.
CeCe at the arch (it's a lot bigger than it looks here)

Later that afternoon, I got under the Trooper to disconnect sway bars etc., and noticed oil covering everything aft of the tranny. The transfer case was wet, and given that a previous owner had stripped out the drain plug and substituted a rubber expansion plug, that seemed a likely culprit. But when I pulled the fill plug, oil gushed out of the t-case. Well there is only one place that could have come from, and sure enough the tranny was down on oil. The only explanation was a plugged tranny breather. The shop manual says next to nothing about the breathers, I couldn't even figure out where it was. Cue Jerry Lemond, he explained that it is a hard line that emerges from the tranny and dives into the shifter quadrant box (but he couldn't explain why). So I cut the breather and put a fuel line on it, goosenecked. There ended my first night wrenching in Moab.

Monday we tried La Sal Pass again with a large group - we tried it last year but ran into deep snow. This year snow levels are way down, in fact Moab has only had 0.65" rain in 2012.

Time for the winch. The snowbank was very dense, I could walk on it. And it had a frozen core that high-centered the first few rigs to try it.

On the way down the backside of the La Sals, I noticed my power steering pump was getting loud. Sure enough, the pressure hose that loops over the belts and down next to the radiator was leaking. I guess these things happen on a 17 year old truck. Wonder of wonders, the first auto parts store I stopped at in Moab had the hose. So, another night wrenching, during the revelry of Chocolate Monkey night at the Stoop. The upper fitting is easy to reach, but the lower one is designed by someone with small Japanese hands, which neither I or Joe are equipped with. And the pressure switch took 3 strapping men with a vise grip to break loose to swap into the new hose. Thus the second night of wrenching in Moab.

One of many funny (to me anyway) stories from this year:...
Kenny saw some Zombie finger puppets in one of the haberdasheries downtown Moab. He was thoughtful enough to realize that his ol' wheelin' bud (me, in this case) would appreciate them enough to incorporate them into the overall scheme of his VX...:thanx:
Anyhoo, I stretched them enough to go over the top of my skully windscreen squirters, canted forward ever so slightly, they allowed water to squirt on my windscreen...from their backside...
The next day, as we were picking our way along a trail, there was a guy in a nice Rubi pulled over in a wide spot, waiting for us to pass. As I rolled up to his window, I looked him square in the eye & inquired: "Dude, do you know if a zombies @$$ is watertight?"
Needless to say, he got a mighty strange look on his face, but before he could reply, I hit the squirters, thus answering my own rhetorical question...
We both got a pretty good ...
Also...rolling up on a group of "pulled over" razrs, & inquiring:
"Pardon me...but would you have any Grey Poupon?"...NEVER gets old...:rolleyesg.
Spent the better part of the aftrnewn removing copious quantities of "the sacred soil"...both in & out.
I never remove all of it, for fear of angering the off-road gods of Moab...:yesgray:
Found all sorts of mis-placed snackage that I thought the squirrels mustv' eaten...:uhohgray:
Tomorrow, gonna try to give her an oil change, & mebbe even slather her flanks with the grape jelly + a coat of wax.
Only used 1.5 qts of oil during the whole 3K trip...
Picked up some Lucas syn 20w50 as my "add oil, oil"...Seemed to work OK.
Rarely had a cruising speed over 70, usually 65-68ish...:rolleyesg
Best mileage of the whole trip was 13.47...:(

I am sorry I missed it, but I did have my own adventure around the same time to prevent an impending existential crisis. I rode my motorcycle (2010 Triumph Street Triple R) 2300 miles round trip from Morrison, CO to Santa Barbara, CA, and hung out with an old friend from high school (who now is a rising star in voice acting in LA) for a few days. (pics http://flic.kr/s/aHsjzvjnUQ)
I haven't been to Moab since my last mountain biking/off-roading (in a lifted Toyota pickup lol) trip there probably 12 years ago. I will do everything in my power to be there in 2013! I need to meet all you awesome folks and take my VX on those perfect trails!
Jo I am sorry the Whore didn't make it, but glad you decided to go anyway. My trip was a real eye opening mood lifter, so I hope the Moab trip was for all of you. A big part of any good journey is making the decision to go.
If any Colorado folks want to tackle a trail this summer, just PM me. I don't usually have a lot going on on the weekends. Let's do it!

I just gotta get that vibe that my juvenile sense of humor won't be taken the wrong way. :o Loosened up - yeah, I bet a drink that is 99.999% hooch & .001 percent "other" would loosen me up (or make me spontaneously combustible.) ;ooy; (Grumble grumble... my stupid "geezer medicine" doesn't allow me to partake as much as I'd like. :_mecker::_mecker::_mecker:)

Oh my... Did the springs pop out?
Not quite. I made some last minute Moab "coil spring retainers" with a few hose clamps so the springs wouldn't pop out. The springs would still unseat at the top mount and would make a loud clanking/pinging sounds every time I hit an obstacle.
I was running shortened 919s, longer shocks and no rear sway bar. I shortened the 919s to reduce the ride height after body lifting the VX and the 919s didn't have enough compression/expansion to stay seated on the trails. I have since fixed the problem (fingers-crossed) by running OEM coil springs with a 2" spacer. So far, so good. :yeso:
