Hey Everyone. I have a 2001 Proton that just hit 80000 miles. Its been happening for a while but during cold startups the exhaust is really white and stinks like fuel. It eventually fades but after a decent time. I have had vehicles run rich before but this seems excessive. Especially since its 4.40 a gallon. haha. Anyone have any ideas of what it could be? I recently replaced the fuel filter and think its way to early for injector problems. I use 89 octane gas.

It's not running rich, it's burning oil.
Either the valve stem seals are bad and it's burning the small amount of oil that leaks past the seals and into the cylinders when it sits or, more likely, it's burning a small amount of oil all the time but you only get visible, odoriferous emissions when the cats are cold. When they get up to operating temp, they do their job and the light scattering PM/VOC we like to call smoke never makes it out of the tailpipe...

Keep an eye on your coolant temps and coolant level too. White smoke can mean a blown head gasket. (Which could also be the source of excess oil-burning.)
