I recently sold my Proton after spending a fortune rebuilding the engine because I was moving out of the country.
Now I am back and am in the process of buying another.
Could someone please give me some tips on preventative maintenance.
The last one I ended up spending $5-6K rebuilding the engine due to the leaking oil issue.
The new one I am buying I don't mind spending $1-2K on taking the engine apart and replacing the necessary parts to prevent this from inevitably happening again. What parts are those and where can I get them?
Also looking for ram cage, roof rack, and any other accessories.
Thanks!
Jason

welcome to the addiction Jason first off,
i personally cant help much with preventative engine stuff, because im not much of a mechanic, i just wrench on stuff till it works :)
what kinds of mods are you looking for? almost everything for the VX is either custom built or difficult to get a hold of. Are you looking to lift your vx, bigger wheels and tires? whats your style, big and tough?
Or are you more of a low and sleek guy? give us some ideas to help you out. Its really hard to just say, i want mods. Well, okay i would suggest you get an alpine supercharger then, just keep about $5k set aside and wait 3 or 4 years till one shows up. See what i mean? ;) (just so you know, almost nothing is bolt-on for a VX. so i hope you dont mind getting creative too)
not trying to be condescending, just trying to help you out.

I basically want to make it like my last one which I foolishly sold.
Going to put some big tires on it, already have them picked out.
Custom Exhaust and custom intake and/or snorkel. Suggestions for intake/snorkel greatly appreciated.
Adding HID lights.
Would like to have a roof rack and ram cage on the front.

Routine maintenance will go a long way... and check that oil. :)
Suggestions for intake/snorkel greatly appreciated.
I fitted a snorkel earlier this year and paired it with a k&n sealed intake.
All of the details are in the link below.

I have an OEM roof rack that may work for you.
There's a brand new Alpine S/C for sale by a member here (Joe Darlington)
he just listed this for sale in the last day or two.

Already found one I see....
Bummer. I have an '01 Ebony, low miles, S/C'd, garage kept, insanely babied, that could be yours.... for $20k. :p
Preventive/routine is really just your typical 3k mile and every 30k or so. Aside from that, personally checking fluids, looking for leaks, paying attention to how she runs/idles.... preventive is nothing out of the ordinary. It's not like an Audi that you have to take a stethoscope to every weekend to. One thing to keep in mind, VXs tend to love to eat through PCVs. Its a good rule to replace it every or every other oil change. Will keep her purring.

Probably me being dense...
Front Bumper
..but do you mean the metal 'bumper tube' behind the cladding...
...or the actual front cladding...
..or...a brush guard/off road aftermarket type of bumper?
Thanks

Haha, $20k is hardly a tease. I don't want to part with it but if someone was willing to "overpay" for it, I could be talked into it. ;) :yesy:
