The past couple months, I've been working on my rear storage solution and finally dove into the project during my 1 month vacay...

Project Blog & Photo Gallery (http://myvehicross.com/project-log/rear-cargo-storage-and-subwoofer-box/)

Down facing sub box. Pioneer Slimline subwoofer. Flush mount.

Test fit of sub box and unfinished storage box. I still have the lid to mount and some kind of locking mechanism to keep everything in place...

Update: 11/05/2012

Almost done wrapping.

Done. I will be adding a rubber lining in the inside.

Fully wrapped, just need to get the hinges mounted.

UPDATE 03/25/2013:

I ran the speaker wire out a tight hole in the back bottom and it is sealed from the inside with liquid nails. It is AIR TIGHT!!

Still haven't decided what to do with amplifier. I really want to mount it behind the panel where the bottle jack is located... Just have to figure out how.

I still need to complete the hinge install in the storage box. I found the hinges online, when opened, a spring holds it open at a 75 degree angel and actually floats forward oh so slightly so it makes no contact with the back of the chair. I'll post the pictures when that is done.

Looks good. Can't wait to see the finished project. I like the isea of the down facing sub...less chance of damaging it when stuff gets thrown on top!

Good idea, I also want to see the finished results.

Off topic, The vinyl stripe looks awesome. :yeso:

Thanks guys! :bgwo: I'm just waiting for the acoustic carpet and adhesive to come in the mail, and I can start wrapping. I also wanted to lay down some carpet to the back side of the rear seats, but I can't find a solid frame behind the vinyl to staple it down to... :mado:

@vxorado, I like the vinyl stripes too, unfortunately with the Vegas sun/weather, it only lasted about a year before it started fading and cracking... It was supposed to be 3-6 year indoor/outdoor vinyl... but I had to remove it.

I will definitely update the post when all is done!

Great job on the boxes, man! I just ran through your blog and now I'm kind of inspired to just take the back seats out and build a storage(with subwoofer/amp) unit that fills the entire area from the back seats to the gate.

I want to make a ramp starting from the gate and going upward into the cabin so that my dog can easily jump in/out of the VX...

Thanks HT! I too would love to remove the rear seats and build something in, I saw your drawing you posted, looks good!

I've carpeted the storage box, but not the sub box. Been lazy on my days off from work... I should be finished this weekend. I'll update the OP when I get a chance to upload the photos.

How did you decide the sub height? IOW, the height lifted off the floor? Are 3 sides enclosed -- where you'd consider it horn-loaded? Or just down-firing? (If horn, the dimensions of the outlet are what I'm referring to.)

Oh yeah...where are you putting the amp?

Nice looking fab!

This is what it looks like from the bottom before sub is installed:

I only have standoffs on the two sides. To get the height, I used an online sub box calculator for my dimensions of the box and whatever was left for my allowance was the height of my standoffs, which ended up being 1&1/2". I didn't horn load it, I thought about it, but I didn't have enough room for what I wanted and my Storage box would be much much smaller.

As for the amp, I haven't decided where to put it. I might mount it where the jack bottle is behind the panel.

You have me thinking about a setup (box) like the one JAMAS has -- with an internal sub. (Could fire forward, backward, or down...IDK)

One big box...a bit higher though.

Lid opens with speaker inside....but protected with a large wooden "L" to box it into a corner. But this "L" wouldn't span all the way from front-to-rear. That way, the woofer would be [both] open to the box, but protected from internally stored objects. Maybe some screen to complete the internal chamber.

I'm not sure if internal objects (as I describe above) would have much determent on sound level. Maybe it could/should be more open...say with 1x2's and screen? Maybe a horn-loaded woofer in the box...with only an outlet?....Hmmmm...Space for the sub too?

Seems it should sit up as high as the seats -- when folded down.

One thing to keep in mind is to make all your measurements of your trunk space before diving in. I had all these ideas in my head and on "napkins" only to find that most of it wouldn't work because the space is a lot smaller than you think.

My idea was to have it flush with the back of the seats when folded forward to make a nice flat storage surface, I can't remember the measurements, but I think it was only 9" in height give or take an inch. If I got what you described pictured in my head right, you may not have much room to do what you want. But I am interested in seeing a sketch of your design.

Updated OP with final photos! I finally finished wrapping the sub box. Weather has been nice aside from the allergies! But now you can see what it looks like side by side.

Subbed for viewing at home. I'm kicking around the idea of trying to put a 12" downfire under either/both front seats, or in the cargo area.

Has anyone ever mounted a sub in the spare door, and KEPT the spare there?
