I love the look of the Butterfly Doors on the VX-1 pictured on this post from a few years ago...

http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=12232&highlight=4200r

I wanted to know if anyone has ever seen this vehicle up close and knows how Isuzu did this? How is the structure different? Could this be done to a VX?

Has anyone ever looked into doing this? I've searched the group with no luck on finding any conversations...

It's probably a tree not worth barking up, but I'd like to toy with the idea. It's been done before, maybe it can be done again...

Your thoughts???

BTW, I have to say I would love to drive the 4200 concept car even today. In fact, I really like the interior. I think the interior fits the VX much better :yeso:

oops, I guess it's called the XU-1.

I saw this on ebay:

and if you zoom in one of the pics you can see the awesome Suicide/Butterfly Doors ....

You can purchase an after-market kit to make these type of doors happen - someone in Japan has done so (images on the Japanese VX site). It will take some adjustments to the sheet metal to get to work, I think.

I've seen our Russian VX brothers have done this too, it was posted on a picture gallery from some time ago. Sorry I can't find the link right now...

Here's a play-by-play of a scissor door installation:

This is seriously bad ***, I would love to do this to my VX.

Same here. I just don't think my VX attracts enough attention when I'm filling up at the gas station yet. :bwgy:

Those are Lambo doors. They go up on their side. I don't really want the lambo doors. I'm talking about the Butterfly doors

I know that's why I called them scissor doors not butterfly doors. Frankly I don't know why anyone would want butterfly doors from a practicality perspective. You can kiss EVER parking next to other cars goodbye which is why you rarely see them on new cars anymore.

That's when you install enough lift to simply slide out of the VX when the door opens upward. Problem solved. :yesy:

Im sorry, but i think the attraction of the VX is that it looks futuristic.. why would you want to put on something that makes it look like its from the 80's??? :_wtf:

Im with you Ryan. I dont get the point of thousands of $$$ to try to imitate 80's vehicles? even Lamborghini doesnt do this on their vehicles anymore.

Time to update your stereotypes guys. This is the 2012/2013 Lambo Aventador:

Yeah but in those examples you can obviously tell that the car and its doors were designed to operate this way, and in fact offer more room to get into the vehicle this way.

BUT, modified "lambo" doors DO NOT increased the area to get into a car but actually decrease the area but putting the lower half of the door now in the middle of the door opening where someone's legs should be going to get in. Just looks stupid.

And have you seen anyone close these "really nice" modified "lambo" doors? They swing down to a normal "slightly open door position" and then must be shut like a normal opening door for the last 5" of travel. No getting around it, modified "lambo" doors just look tacky and have no real function or improvement in any area.

I think with any mod, it's all about personal taste. Most of you who lift and create more of a trail-ride would probably not do this type of mod - obviously, as it has no purpose when you're in the middle of a pit trying to hop out into mud. For those who use their VXes as a street ride, I think this mod could look good and be fun to do, provided you find the right kit configuration and either have the skills to pull it off or can pay someone to do the job right. One of the interesting things about the VX is that it can appeal to both off-road and street-rod types...

... and have no real function or improvement in any area.

You mean like smoked headlights, turn lenses, tail lights, bigger/heavier/shinier rims, VXC/rowhard "skid plates", vinyl wraps, or LED conversions? ;) (Don't take that personally, that list includes several mods I've done myself.)

I do agree that a poorly executed install (which it sounds like you're most familiar with) is counter productive. But I don't get why you think this opening would be difficult to get your legs through?

http://vehi.world.coocan.jp/gullwing4/DSCF9013a.JPG

As johnnyapollo posted it is all about taste and I understand this mod is very polarizing. But I don't think you can legitimately argue that it's dated or nonfunctional (though no improvement in functionality obviously).

Ash- the aventador does have lambo doors, but the merc doesnt. Also, that mercedes is a concept in that photo :)

To each their own i suppose.

The SLS AMG is very real.

It even has explosive bolts on the gullwing doors in case of a rollover. James Bond should drive one in the next movie and test that function... :yeso:

My VX is NOT GOING OFF ROAD AT ALL. It is a show car, hence the 6 coats of new paint, 8 coats of clear, powdercoat rotors, special LED lighting system (ICE LED UFO, from the UK), and other mods.

Butterfly doors would just be awesome for my SHOW TRUCK. Someone said earlier about some of us using our VX for ON ROAD and that's what I'm doing.

By the way, the new BMWi8 also has Butterfly doors (as well as several other vehicles)

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/bmw-i8-concept-official-photos-and-info-news

That is by far not the best link, but I'm in a rush this morning and just wanted to post something real quick. I understand the VX was not made for this, but because the Isuzu XU-1 WAS designed for this and is similar to the VX, I thought it may be possible...

Off course it's possible, just depends on how custom you want to get. The butterfly doors may require an extra hinge on the windshield frame.

I would call this company:
http://www.scissor-doors.com/gullwing-doors.php

They don't show a product for butterfly doors but have several pictures that seem to be what you want.

Yes, just like in posts 13 & 14, but gullwing isn't the name. I owned an 83 Delorean (w/gullwing doors) for about a year and when I.sold it, I missed the doors. I like gullwing doors and lambo doors but NOT ON A VX lol

Butterfly doors though I think are a perfect fit

The Mercedes is real.

It is all about taste. If you voice your opinions repeatedly, expect the same in return.

Personally I think this really fits Tys idea and overall goal and would look great.

I dunno...it would be almost as functional as half doors on the trail...just pop em up & hang your head out for better self spotting...:yesgray:

AND, as an added bonus...

if you DO find yourself in a mud pit, they open out a little, & up a LOT...MUCH easier...:yesgray:

Given the obviously impending massive escalation in vehicross value such idiosyncratic and expensive modification seems counter market trends.

... if you plan to sell. I'm always amused to see members (not you specifically) post in one thread about how they want the value to go up and then post in another thread how they'll never sell. If so what's the point?

"He who dies with the most (valuable) toys wins!"

What is your estate worth? Will your children appreciate a VX worth $10K more than one worth $2k. Will the sale of your prized VehiCROSS cover the costs of your funeral? So many post-mortem pluses to a higher value vehicle.

Or then there's also the thought that your widow will use the immense proceeds of the sale to enjoy a lovely ocean voyage accompanied by her new young paramour. :bgwb:
