View Full Version : Finally! Replacement Roof Rack FLAPS and Spare tire cover KNOBS- COLORS available!
VX KAT
12/01/2012, 01:15 AM
"Jasonm621" and I have been working together for the past few months to make replacement roof rack FLAPS and spare tire cover KNOBS.
Jason made them of a robust, UV-stable resin, and they're extremely durable and far stronger than the OEMs.
Offering these at introductory pricing to gauge interest.
He may be able to replicate the "towers" in the near future.
Jason's cranking these out right now, so PM Jason if interested or have any questions.
FLAPS:
Cast to include the 4 side dimples, and snap into place, exactly like the OEMs.
Available in 8 colors, 7 to approximately match your paint color, and 1 red color for the red/black interiors.
Matte black color to match the OEM towers/rack.
Can also be done with a glossy finish.
Silver highlight available on raised "Vehicross".
Set of four (4) $40 shipped.
KNOBS: I'll post pics of these installed as soon as I can get that C-clip off my OEMs...:goof:
Cast of solid resin, not hollow like OEMs.
So they won't break off and no dowels are needed.
Available in 8 colors, 7 to approximately match your paint color, and 1 red color for the red/black interiors.
Set of four (4) $40 shipped.
COLORS:
For those of us that like to color accent various things on our truck!
Astral
Kaiser
Ebony
Ironman/Victory white <-- that says Ironman/Victory White :p
Proton
Dragon
Foxfire
RED Jason is working on a little more red for this one compared to the sample seen here in pic.

4) Back is slightly different on the "top" part, but mold includes the 4 dimpled areas on sides to snap securely into place.http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g386/photokat4/DSCN9477.jpg

these colors are still a little too bright compared to actuals, so keep that in mind....think that only is affecting the brighter colors.

Flash made these appear more glossy...they are NOT shiny!
Foxfire, Red and Dragon are still a little off in these pics...they're correct to my eye, but not in the pictures, no matter what I tried.

I agree. Very nice work. Since I'd already bought a set of used knobs from you (and haven't lost the rack flaps), I don't currently have a need. But, I'd certainly choose this option if necessary!
Didn't see it mentioned, but I hope you two will consider replacement rail covers and think you'd have two options. 1) replicate the stock part 2) create a version with cutout to install roof racks.
The extra durability part is what sounds best! Old plastic stuff just gets brittle with age and can't cut it forever.
Nice work!

In the Future Im hoping to make the rail covers with & without holes for the roof rack. Those thin parts are hard to mold and cast without imperfections. In the meantime just running these Yak Flaps and Spare tire covers on the red carpet and fulfilling orders! So Stay tuned! :bwgy:

This last weekend, we installed some knobs and flaps, and they both work very well. You can pry the old E-clips off with a flathead screwdriver -- just put the blade on either side of the fuzzy part and pry away from the bolt -- then you can snap them back on the original with just finger-pressure.
This picture shows black:

Yep you got it. I want the rail cap/covers. I can see from the inside views you posted that the original parts are injection molded with slides (slides = $$$ in mold tools), but they could be built with 3D printing and/or stereo lithography then cast for the small quantities our VX family needs (ie < 10,000). Mine are currently nekkid (I have no crossbars on my rails, nor do I need any currently).
Also: cute teddy bear :D
Edit: I would think also that color coordinated rail covers would be cool too. I would put silver ones on my Astral!

+1 for rail covers
I don't need these cool items at the moment, but fantastic job guys!
Jason, I have mucho experience with injection molded plastic part design (batteries and medical devices) if you want to chat about how to handle the thin walls of the rail covers. There are tricks and cheats...
-Tom
I may have to start that conversation with ya soon! Right at the moment im limited to casting equipment that can sit on my kitchen countertop without my wife getting too mad at me. Just some rtv molds and casting resin... Injection molding may be a while down the road. But any tricks or cheats are certainly welcome to keep the bad casts to a minimum!

Rapid prototyping companies (I am good friends with the manager at a local one) can do basically what you're doing without annoying your wife ;)
They can take a 3D design, create the part with stereolithography and other methods, then make RTV molds for short-run production (i.e. VX owner quantities).
I have Solidworks 3D software, and the rail covers, compared to tiny medical devices I have designed, are like tanks. The rapid prototype shops have so many cool materials now that there is bound to be one that will remain strong in thin cross section, won't fade in UV, plus the rail caps aren't load bearing since they have to be removed to put the roof rack on. There would be no need for injection molding, which is good since I doubt anyone here would be in to paying some of the $10-15k for the tool to be made.
Total cost for a part like the rail cap and then runs of 100 or so might be <$2000 with a per part casting cost of $10-20 off the top of my head. Really the only trick is to get the design in to Solidworks or some other CAD program accurately.

Im saving up some money for a makerbot replicator desktop 3d printer. Im familiar with sketchup, autocad, and meshmixer which is an advanced sketchup... with some practice and experience im hoping to get some good use and fun out of it. But first thing is getting $1800 for the printer... for now im getting pretty good at duplicating existing parts. so far the demand for them isnt anywhere the 100's or 1000's so my kitchen based replicating factory with my spare time is meeting demand so far... its a whole other catagory recreating parts in the computer and having a CNC or 3D printer do the work for you! Certainly a catagory that im interested in!

The rapid prototype guys I work with (http://www.spectrumplasticsgroup.com/stereolithography-sla) will do castings from 1-10, 100, 1000, or anything in between using RTV molds of SLA parts and lots of choices of casting resin.
They have other options for part counts above 1000. But we don't need that. I have a great relationship with these guys, so if you have any questions, just let me know.

Finally got around to putting my black ones on today - they fit, look, and work PERFECTLY! Plus - you can REALLY "crank 'em down", which means you won't have to constantly re-tighten them - EXEMPLARY work!
Got my order sent in from some red ones (as that was what color my last remaining one was). I have a crack down the middle of my tire cover, anyone got an idea of what would be good to seal that with to keep it from getting larger?
Can't wait to get the knobs and put it back together. Thanks!

I've used PC-7 to do repairs on the exterior cladding with very good results. I haven't used it on any of the interior panels that I can remember but it'd probably be the best match & plenty strong. You can order it online or pick it up at True Value.
It's 2 part epoxy that mixes into a pretty thick paste. Press it into the crack as best you can with a putty knife. You can put a piece of tape across the 'face side' & work from the back to save yourself some sanding once the epoxy has cured.

That would be a tough one! Pretty much the thinner the piece the harder it is to mold and cast. All those holes in the part for the buttons add to the difficulty as well! Im thinking to duplicate that part would take a bit more skill and tooling than Im capable of... Sorry :(
