View Full Version : VX-O2 meetup LA at the Peterson 2013

Ok...got a response back. We just need dates and a minimum of 10 people attend with hopefully 10 VX's as well. The VP is trying to reduce the price to $35 per person for the Vault tour which is usually $2500 with the new ownership. I'd like to propose 1/26/13, but that might be too early for people to commit. Would that work? Please let me know ASAP. Otherwise, we can also shoot for 2/16/13. I need to propose firm dates for the Petersen museum. For more info, it's at www.petersen.org and the museum is in LA.

Bye the way, this might be my last time trying to set this up. If there's someone that still wants to scan the VX-O2, let me know too. We might not get another opportunity. I'm also inviting VX-O2 designers to attend.

Baldwin, I give you much credit for organizing this and wish I could join in!! I have family in Woodland Hills, was just out in LA and at the Rose Bowl grounds day before the big event taking kids to the Kidspace Museum. Actually saw actor Neal McDonough there. I did make a point to go to the Petersen Museum, as I said in my post here (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?threadid=23097), I got a blank stare and a "don't know what you're talking about" when I asked the whereabouts of the Isuzu VX-02, etc, etc to an actual experienced "vault" tour guide who knew just about every vehicle there. It was like either I asked about where the spaceship from Roswell was or how to get to the basement in the Alamo (joking). I was in the "vault", no Isuzu's at all were there, plenty of other rare and expensive vehicles though. Perhaps its hidden away in another part not accessible during their now open vault tour, I don't know, but I'd double check to make sure what it is they are saying you can actually see. I only say that because of the response I got when I asked.

Don't think the trip from Chicago is in the cards, but Cecilia's dad is excited about the possibility... We will see if he chimes in and posts here on VX.info.
My 2 cents...It wouldn't be me this year, but some of the Moabites might possibly drift west, either before, or after the event.
It would be that many more folks who were closer to Cali than usual...:_confused

I would love to go! Count me in!
(I'll drive my VX there)
I can do either day.
Thanks!

I just got wind of this this morning ... count me in for this one !!!! Oh ya !!!! I live 45 min from L.A. !!
Oh ya , forgot to mention I'm Cecilia's dad and I'm in for any weekend date !!!!
I'd like to go. But the 26th is way too soon for my schedule. The later date, 2/16, would probably work for me.

Later date is better for me too. I have to go to Sacramento sometime in the next few months so I might be able to finagle a layover in LA. The more time to work the angle the better though.

I'll give the Petersen the Feb Date and keep you all posted. If you can get more people in the know about the event, it'll help validate our club presence. If we have a ton of VX's show up, it might make it easier for a future event especially if I can get Isuzu to show up too...or whatever is remaining for them. Would be great to shoot for 20 VX's showing up.

FYI
------
Happy New Year.
I apologize for the lengthy delay in getting this set up, but I think we’re now in a position to make the "visit" part of your request happen. We can discuss the scanning thing under separate cover, if that’s still a possibility.
As mentioned, we have changed our process for the visitors going down to the Vault. The best way to begin this process is to pick a date, determine how many in your group, and we can go from there. If there are more than 10 in your group, Citi will get you the group discount rate and we'll figure out the fee for the vault tour (usual rate is $25 + entrance) based upon your attendance - we just need to cover our costs, as I'm sure you understand.
Let us know which dates are possibilities and we'll check our calendar...
Thanks very much; we look forward to seeing you, soon.
Best regards,
Curator of the Collections

Ok, we have 2/23/13 confirmed to see the VX-O2 at the Petersen Automotive Museum. I need RSVP's asap so that we can lock in that day and the rate. See below. Last count from here and Facebook was about 15 people. Hopefully we can have the same or more committed. Scanning might not be as easy and will have to be done at a different date. Hit me up ASAP. I suggest getting to the museum at 10AM. We can tour the museum and then at 1PM we go to the vault to end the day with the VX-O2. Please email me at baldwin.chiu@gmail.com
-----
We could schedule your club for a Vault Tour on the following Saturday on February 23rd at either 1 pm. Since you’re bringing a minimum of 10 people, your club members will pay a reduced rate of $8 per person and an additional fee of $25 per person is required to access the Vault. IF you wish to scan the VX, a $500 fee is required and will need to schedule an appointment on a separate day. Thank you in advance.
I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Baldwin, I'm so sorry that that date is a no-go for me. I will be out of town on the 23rd.
Having been at the last VX museum visit, I can tell you that being allowed in the vault is one of those "chances of a lifetime" happenings. To be allowed to come face to face with so many famous and unforgettable cars is breathtaking:yesb:.
Plus, getting together with other VXers is always worth the effort! :yeso: I will be sorry not to see my Vx friends again. :(

hey Baldwin...
It's a maybe for me now. Just landed a job, after 3.5 mos laid off, and I start on Monday. Depending on workload and schedule, we'll try to make it down there. But, it's too soon to tell. Definitely would like to meet and see new and old faces again!
I was one of the few fortunate ones who had the chance to drive the O2 around their parking lot during the first Isuzu VX corp. meeting. Those on the fence about attending, do so as it's a once in a lifetime op. to check out the O2 in person up close! Thanks for putting this all together! rudy

ITAL Design of Italy actually designed/built the VX-O2. Are you really able to import those folks? Just curious? Thx

They shut down a long time ago. They even destroyed the mold for the VX-O2. I already contacted them in Italy. Isuzu has been invited. Headquarters in OC now.

Great news. Not only are we confirmed, they will give us a 2nd guided tour at no additional cost. I'll put a credit card down to keep on file, no charges will be applied. A $20 fee will be applied only in the event of a no-show or late cancellation but it sounds like we're all in. The tour duration is about one hour long. We could arrange the tour at 10:30 am ending at 11:30 am, then self-explore the exhibits for about half hour, and have lunch at Johney Rockets at noon....then go to the Vault to see the VX-O2 at 1PM.

Sounds like quite a unique opportunity to see the VX-02. I took a standard vault tour a few weeks ago and didn't see it, so they must have it tucked away in another section. I'm afraid that presently I have a track-day conflict on the 23rd, but plans could change. I'll keep an eye on this thread in the mean time. Thanks for making these arrangements.

So VxSport forwarded me pictures Sue sent him, and I have to say the most hilarious picture is of the undercarriage, which shows a rusty muffler despite only having 2500-ish miles on the clock and having been stored in a vault for much of its life. I'll post the pic tomorrow if Sue doesn't put it up tonight.

Here ya go. The rusty muffler was one of my favorites too! The Petersen tour guide person told us this "garage" set up was for some Craftsman commerical.
NICE rims, eh Mav??!! ;) I think they're a few shades different than ours, more of a taupe color than the silvery/pearl white of our rims. Very sharp though!
Dave and I both noticed the better handling with the wider offset rims/tires. We have a 6 mile mountain segment at the top of Prescott that's nothing but sharp mountain switchbacks/curves, and the VX was noticeably easier to handle it. I've been through it at least 5 times prior, and this was really easier!

Glad everyone came out. Wish more did, but we had a good turnout still. Was happy to meet some of you for the first time including Steve Jennes and Scott Hyde....former Isuzu guys...and Scott being the coverboy for the VX-O2 on the In Roads magazine. Dope. I can't believe it took almost 1 year of working with the Petersen to get this set up. I'll email you guys the coordinator I worked with's info and maybe you can all give her a thank you and shoot her one of your fav pics with you and the VX-O2. Might make it easier for a future visit. I can't help it, I've become fixated on the side-view mirrors on the VX-02. I'm wondering if they were custom made, or whether they're simply a take-off from another vehicle and paint-matched to suit.
I personally just think that the stock VX Isuzu-ish side mirrors date the overall look of the VX much more than necessary, especially when that could have easily been remedied with the simple addition of VX-02 aero-type mirrors.
So thank you all for the pictures and video. Now I at least have some more visual references to work with for finding some possible custom mirrors.

Does anyone have pics of the inside trunk or the rear inside door?

The side mirrors were taken from a 2000 dodge neon I think. So don't be that impressed. :) Chif and Steve from Isuzu told me.

Congrats to Baldwin and the gang that made this outing a success. Also, kudos to ITAL Designs for creating such a celebrated concept car. It makes us all dream a little bit larger and really appreciate the special trucks we all own. The VX-02 was truly on that "Mission to Mars" imagination-wise! Hats off to that movie-star car!

Cool, thanks for the info. I'd already found a few mirrors on Ebay that looked to have a very similar shape to the mounting section, but it's always difficult to tell if it would be a simple bolt on or whether further modification would be required. Either way, I can't help but be impressed with how much better the Neon mirrors make the VX look compared to the stock side-mirror/air-brakes. (I'm guessing 5 mpg better mileage with the simple addition of some aero mirrors.) ;)
