View Full Version : new LED Headlight bulb conversions (not HID)

(sort of saw this coming, the new Audis just started with an actual
LED bulb in one of their new models.. and Ive been selling some
off-road light bars now for about a yr) ..BUT

Ive had HIDs like most of us in my car now for about 10 yrs
Recently while at SEMA I came across a company who is making
LED replacement bulbs.
I was a bit skeptical as always, so I bought a set for my
Isuzu Vehicross (H4 non projector headlight) and a set of
9006 for my SVX in 5k kelvin rating.

I installed 1 on the right side of my svx and compared it to
the 6K HID that was in the left side of my SVX..
I have to admit, think Im leaving them in !!!
The light output whiter (due to the 5k compared to 6k of course)
but the pattern lites up much better in the first 20 30 ft in front of
the car.
For long distance, I still have 5k HIDs for waaayyyy down the road stuff
but think Im going to stick with the LEDs in my lows for now.

I havent put the H4 set in my Vehicross yet to see how they react
to non projector headlights, but thats next.
These dont use ballast of either and are not as easily breakable like std
halogen or HID bulbs, kind of a plus.

We are going to sell these kits prob for about $150 set.
Ill post some pics.

I'm tempted to get a set myself. It looks like it has a decent heat sink and has a cooling fan, so the heat shouldn't be too big of a deal.

I saw they already have these kits on Ebay for $140 shipped.

Very cool, I was wondering when LEDs headlight bulbs would make it to aftermarket mods.

Impressive light output for no ballasts. I bet the glare is petty bad coming off the reflectors but no worse than an HID conversion.

Ballast in HID kits are only used to convert and regulate the flow of current from 55w down to 35w (normal HID kit wattage). These kits come with their own control module which does the same thing, just down to 15w.

how well do these work in a non projector housing? I tried HID's in my sport bike (non projector housing) and absolutely hated them. I couldnt see with them in. There were a 5k 35w kit. I changed them out for PIAA Xtreme White halogen bulbs and can see so much better.

I can, but I can tell you right now, it can be a little misleading
most cameras will adjust and keep the aperture open longer
making for a nice pic, but it doesnt always give an accurate
acct of how much light you are getting in person.
I know this because Ive tried it in the past.
I can try to take some more this weekend if you want, Im
waiting for my Sony camera to get back from repair.

the LED closer to the Tip is your LOW BEAM
when you hit the high beam, that stays ON
while the LED closer to the base also goes on.
Pretty sweet if you ask me and as long as your lenses
are clean and clear, overall results I cant imagine anyone
not really satisfied with a set :)
The instant on is a nice feature, 1 thing I dont like about
HIDs are they take a minute or so to warm up and be 100%
effective.

All my kits have a 14 day money back no questions asked
warranty, if you buy a set you have 2 weeks to install and
use them, if for any reason you dont like them, box them
up in the original boxes etc and send them back in the mail
for full refund (all but the $8 S&H we charge to get them out)

We have some cool panel Dome lites too for our VXs and
today, I installed come hi powerd LEDs bulbs in my front
facing round running lights,
They are huge 194 projector style bulbs, and look awesome nite or
day, I use drive around with my parking lights on by day
and they make for a cool DRL .

above them in my horns, I have matching
LEDs in there too, a little smaller.

So when the website says 2 "drivers" are those analogous to ballasts for HID kits? If I'm running an HID kit can I just swap out the ballast and HID bulb for this kit? Just wondering how much conversion work would be required.

im still waiting for pix of the led headlight bulbs in the VX. Was still not clean on if the light from the LED's scatter like HID's do in a non projector housing.

I may have time to do some pics tonite..
btw, I liked my HIDs in my VX for the lst 3 yrs, no real
complaints at all from me.

On the other bulbs, I didnt add it to the site yet, but Im
hoping to any day now.
Think Im going to sell them as a 4 pcs Hyperwhite LED bulb
kit for the horns and front turns..
The plugs are a little finicky with the small 194 bulbs, if they
are too loose and dont make a good connection, you guessed it
of course they wont turn on.
The aftermarket world when matched with older used parts
is never dull :)

My lights above my blinkers dont even come on. I have no switch for them inside, but haven't looked at them to see if there are even any wires or bulbs in them either (plan on doing that this weekend). Should I have a switch for those or should they come on when the parking lights are on?

Curious to hear from VXers that have made the leap into 2014 by converting all their VX external lights from incandescent to LED lighting. Any afterthoughts or recommendations?

I intend to make that leap soon as I get the details on recommended LEDs for the VX from Vehi-Cross-Az. I plan to have an automotive shop rewire the front parking lights (round ones between the headlights and turn signals) into manually controlled DRLs, separate from the parking lights.

They come in singles, so you will need 4. I did a bunch of searching prior to ordering, and Amazon has them the cheapest. You can pick them up @ AutoZone, but Amazon Prime has free shipping, so you'll save a few $ by ordering them.

Successfully replaced exterior incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, except for the brake lights and headlights. Now my turn signals are probably visible by astronauts on the space station. I am very happy with the appearance of the intense lights.

Having lived most of my childhood and teen years in Germany, I'm accustom to seeing turn signals used often. In Germany, even emergency responders with lights and sirens use their turn signals to indicate lane changes and upcoming turns. I prefer drivers use turn signals for safety and out of courtesy. So I use mine to indicate my turns and lane changes, religiously. Can't miss those intense LED turn signal lights, now.

Ordered a pair of Spyder LED brake lights, along with the other LED bulbs, from Amazon.com. The 1156 turn signal LED bulbs were shipped directly from China and work fine. Also shipped directly from China were a pair of 1157 brake light Spyder LED bulbs ($21.28/pair) with a circular base diameter slightly too wide for the VX tail light. Broke one of the LED "spider legs" when attempting to install it. I imagine getting a refund will be a "mission impossible". Just submitted a refund request to Amazon.com.

LED headlight kit ($69) came direct from China, but I haven't opened that package, yet.

Old age taking its toll. Couldn't even remove the existing headlight bulbs to begin installing the LED light system, which looked to be a straight forward task. Will return to Alltech (http://www.alltechautoclovisca.com/) to have their pros do the job.

After a couple email exchanges, managed to get a full refund on those Spyder lights that didn't fit the VX tail light assembly. Stopped by the local O'Reilly Automotive Parts Store and bought a pair of 1157 red LED lights for $16.99, which work perfectly. Their intense light output is focused toward the rear.

Bill, it's not old age stopping you from putting the headlight bulbs in. It's super tight behind the headlights for sure. I can, usually, get the passenger side out and in easily enough, but I usually have to remove the air filter box in order to get to the drivers side light.

+1. I messed around with that, and got tired of it. It was much easier to just go ahead and remove the bumper and pull the headlights, and the fact that I have a winch and brushguard and was willing to disconnect it all says something.

Honestly, now that I've done it a few times, it takes like 5 mins, tops. Grille comes out (2 10mm bolts on top and 2/3 screws in the grille face, can't remember exactly), then you take off the cladding screws, and including the screws in the wheel wells and the 3 underneath. Slides right off after that.

I installed them in the side markers, fender "horns" and front parking lights. They are intensely bright and clearly visible in daylight. Had the fender horn lights and front parking lights wired to an independent fog light switch, which I use as DRLs.
