What oil do you use and why?

When I bought my VX, Jack, the guy I bought it from was using 10w-30 high mileage oil so of course I have been doing the same. Yesterday at Advance, the dude at the register told me I should be using 5w-30. He went and got it for me. It too was high mileage oil. Isn't 5w-30 for more cooler climates. I don't know diddly squat about oil. I think the 5w is thinner than the 10w. I'm in VA where it's the 50's now, but we'll be in the 70's and 80's in no time. Jack is consuming about one quart per 1000 miles if that matters.
What does everyone else use out there? And will it matter to add a different oil without doing a complete oil change with the 5w-30.

Jo's right it has been beat to death but...

I run whatever premium synthetic AutoZone / Advance Auto has on sale at the time (gasp! :eek:). I've read the performance charts and articles in the past and have come to the conclusion that the differences are so miniscule that if you change the oil every 3K miles there's virtually no difference.
