I am thinking the 6VD1 is the 3.2L as it is stamped on the bottom of my wife's 3.2l engine in the RS:) I spent a few hours under there while wheeling, strange I had never noticed it before and here is this post:)

I picked up a remanufactured 6VE1 from Barnette's a few years ago. Have a look here (https://www.barnettesengines.com/Engines.html) and click on the Isuzu icon, then scroll down to line 25. Kinda pricey, but they give a 5-year, unlimited mile warranty. To me, it was worth the expense after having not spent a dime on my rig for the few years prior.

I'm in the same search that you are, for my Trooper.
I believe the 3.2 is a perfect swap. If I remember correctly, member givegodachance did it and loves it.
It's very tempting, but only because I can't find a 6VE1 short block either!

The only difference between the 98+ 3.2 and 3.5 are the pistons and the crank, the blocks are identical. The cams are slightly higher duration too if I remember right, so if you can't find the 3.5 just get a 3.2 and throw your 3.5 cams in there and call it a day. The 3.2 will only be a 5-10hp difference compared to stock so it won't really be noticable.
Yes everything from the 3.5 will bolt right onto a 3.2 including the heads. The heads are also identical except for the camshafts which will still work on either engine, the 3.5 cams just have slightly higher duration.

heaads, water pump, etc. are identical, will fit no problem on 3.2 6vd1
Not sure about USA, but here we have 2 series of the 6VD1 engine.
Single cam was the early one, and our twin cam version was the later 1.
The twin cam version is identical to the 3.5L engine, and has a "W" in the engine number.
I think it is the 5th or 6th digit.

Does the $2800 price listed with a $1000 core charge mean $3800?

No, they charge the core charge if they don't receive your swapped out motor within a certain time.
I had nothing but good experience with them. After having been jerked around by a few other providers, they were wonderful.

I had talked to them and they are very helpful, but found a rebuilt one in a wreck and went with that. I live just 20 miles from them.
