View Full Version : Tires rub in the back. Fender trim ideas?

I trimmed the front two fenders in the front of the well but the back of the well is a little more tricky since it is a mounting point for cladding and such. Does any one have any pics of a fender trim job?

Most people add spacers between the rear bump stops & the frame to prevent tire contact with the rear fender well.

Also, some use longer aftermarket bump stops (pro-thane or similar)

Not sure Dub but I think VB was referring to the BFH work necessary on the rear edge of the front wheel-wells, that process always makes me cringe...beat until cleared! OUCH!! :_brickwal

Vinny,

There are pix scattered throughout my gallery of the the trimming on the rear of the front fender wells. IIRC both Dub & KAT have some pix in theirs as well.

I'm running 33x12.50's but with the offset on my rims, I have more of a rubbing issue than most. I'm now in the process of filling in the gaps between fender & cladding (left from the trimming process) with black RTV. It's really not that noticable so 'go for it'.:)

One other thing that I did was to remove all hex head bolts in the fender well and replace with pan head. It may not help a whole lot (mebbe 1/4") but at least if the tire hits, the sharp edges of the hex head won't be chewing up & spitting out tire.

One other thing to check for is any of the fender skirt protruding into the fender well. Several of my plastic retainers have failed over the years (& 2 accidents). Just last weekend, I found a section of skirt sticking into the wheel well about 3/4". The good news is that the skirt is fairly thin plastic so you can just trim to your heart's content with a pocket knife.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for those photos? the link was dead. I'm running a 265/70 and have a bit of rubbing in that spot on a stock height VX. THe T bars are sagging a bit in the front, I'm hoping leveling it out will give me the extra clearance I need...

For my 285/60-18s on stock 18 x 7 rims, this is all that's required to be trimmed, not even any T-bar turns.
Use rimsntires.com ("size comparer") to compare the 285s to the 265s and it will help guide you in what area to trim.

diameter: 31.5" ..... 32.6"
tire width: 11.2" ......10.4" (section width)
sidewall height: 7.3".....6.7"
